Testing Decay in Trees with Resistance Drill!

  • There are a few ways to test for decay in trees. A resistance drill, or Resistograph, can be used to drill into the wood and measure the strength in real time. The drill measures the resistive forces that the wood pushes back on the drill bit, and records those on a graph. You can decipher these graphs to get a better idea of where the decay in the tree is.
    This large Tulip Tree (Liriodendron tulipifera) had a large wound and cavity in it's base that likely originated from an accidental construction injury many decades ago. If a large wound occurs in the trunk of a tree, it can be difficult for the tree to compartmentalize the wound. This tree has been trying to close of the wound for many decades, but is ultimately losing the battle. We estimated the age of this tree to be about 130 years old, and the height is about 100ft.

      proper pruning helps.
      Many times, it starts to decay when someone leaves a long stub or an excessively large wound on a tree, and the rain and bugs enter more easily.

    • @ElectricityTaster
      @ElectricityTaster Рік тому +5

      As long as you prune the tree correctly (less is more), I would look into proper watering and soil health. Decay is natural and expected, as most old trees are hollow. It becomes a question the trunk growing faster than the decay. Look into biochar.

    My mother's place has a very large black walnut. Twenty years ago, it was struck by lightning. My brother sawed off all of its secondary branches expecting it was on its way out and needed to block naturally falling wood as it hung over Mom's house. It had a visible crack at it's base all the way up the tree to as high as a person could see. It is still alive and growing, but it's walnuts are of poor quality every since the lightning strike.

  • @jbrobertsable
    @jbrobertsable Рік тому +6

    Tree’s need surprisingly little sound wood to remain structurally viable. You should share the empirical data you gather next time you recommend a tree removal!
    I think you’re meant to keep the drill bit fully contained when it’s receding into the housing, these tools are normally highly and expensively calibrated regularly!

    • @ElectricityTaster
      @ElectricityTaster Рік тому +1

      Yeah. And most trees will put on reaction wood to compensate for the decay, as long as they have enough vigour. But there are important targets within the fall zone. The only real way to certify that the tree is safe is to do a static pull test based on the maximum load expected for the tree. Calculating how much sound wood is enough is very complicated and relies on too many assumptions, in my opinion.
      There is also the possibility of doing a canopy reduction and staking the tree to the ground like the snag in Blade Runner 2049.

In other words, we get paid the same regardless of our recommendation to remove or to retain the tree. As tree lovers, we always try to preserve native trees like this. This was too far gone.

    What's the equivalent of maggots for trees? Maggots can be put on human or animal gangrenous flesh and will only eat dead tissue, leaving living tissue behind to heal when the maggots have been removed.
