You’re 100% correct about the inconsistencies on the Texas side. That will never hold up against Ohio State. We are for sure in trouble against them, they’re so good.
There are 2 forms of targeting. First is leading with the crown on any play and it applies to both offensive and defensive players. The second is any contact to the head or neck on a defenseless player. The Taaffe hit was a textbook second version of targeting. And I don’t give a darn if you like the rule or not. All sports is a combination of cooperation to play by a defined set of rules and then to compete to win under those rules. Texas plays in the NCAA. They agreed to the rules. Call the rules. It’s that simple.
Texas' problem was their offensive scheme. Instead of capitalizing on the size of their offensive line, they opted for a finesse approach, which is not typical in the SEC. A power run game is usually the strategy when facing a smaller defensive line. I’ll admit that Arizona State’s defense was quicker than I expected, which could have made it more effective to use the power run to wear them down. Despite their offense being largely ineffective due to poor scheming, Texas' defense performed decently. Had Texas played complementary football, the outcome likely would have been similar to the Penn State-Boise State game.
Everyone acts like Levitt played better than Ewers, except that he didn’t. Quinn threw more touchdowns and had over a 100 yards more passing. In the 4th quarter he drove the field 3 times. I was picking ND over UGA, but now I'm flippin' my pick. I've never pulled for Georgia but I have to say, I'd really like to see them win the Natty again.
Quinn finally showed he can be clutch. He thoroughly outplayed Leavitt (and showed he is the better QB right now). His last 3 throws all went end zone.
You were asking how Texas fans are feeling. I was pissed from mid 3rd qtr or somewhere around the time ASU made that drive to get stopped on the goal line right before Texas gave up the safety. This has happened way too many times, we’re rolling, dominating teams and fail to go up 21-0 or 21-3 and just let the opposition hang around. Then, Ewers is always good for a complete bone head of a pick. Texas has yet to play a complete game and I still have faith we will. Hopefully that is in the Natty. Anyways, I think most Texas fans are upset that it came to 4th and 13. Should have never been that close. We need to be ruthless.
