- Do you think sewing is an expensive hobby? Can you save money sewing? Can you sew clothes cheaper than buying them? My answer: it depends! Here are my thoughts on sewing as an expensive hobby AND my tried and true tips for how to make sewing cost less for people on a budget. You can scratch your sewing itch and do it in a frugal way, I promise!

I started sewing years ago, and learned on thrift store sheets. I love thrifting for fabrics. I have made pjs out of flannel sheets too. I have to make my own clothes because adult clothing is too big for me, in the smallest size, that includes underwear. So for me it’s a necessity. I don’t have to buy as much fabric for my size compared to most people, so I save there. The clothes I make last a lot longer than the Chinese crap.
At thrift stores,I buy 2XL mens clothes, if there’s fabrics I like, and make my clothing out of them.
If I can’t find anything, I buy fabric at Walmart. I’ve been burned by Joann fabrics online shopping. So I refuse to spend my money there.
I splurged when I saw 108” wide flannel fabric for $7.50 a yard on Amazon. Joann fabrics sells it for $16 a yard. I bought enough to make a king quilt, and enough left over for winter pjs, and lounge pants, and shorts lol
At Walmart I found a bolt of fabric, one that I’ve been wanting to buy since it released, but everyone sells it for $7.99 a yard. I would never spend that much on fabric. But when I saw this, On the bolt, I only paid 3.33 a yard.
I refashion my clothes, if I can’t refashion, I keep the clothing and use it for something else. All scraps get used in my house. I wanted to make beds for dogs and cats for the local shelter. I had no idea how many scraps I would need. I have nowhere near the amount I need lol. I also will never buy synthetic fabrics, if I have to ( not for me) those I get at the thrift store and repurpose them. I only buy natural fabrics, because of a health issue, my immune system overreacts, if I wear synthetics I itch up a storm.
I am financially challenged, because I have a lot of health issues, so I try to make do. I hate seeing waste.
I save a lot of money by knowing how to sew/alter. I like to shop at thrift stores and when you know how to alter, you're not limited by size (unless it's way too small). I see a lot of thrift haul videos where the "perfect garment" is put back because it's missing a button or is too long and I'm over here screaming why don't you learn how to sew?!
Even with machines, you don't need to buy a $500 machine. A lot of the old 100% metal machines are work horses that don't take much to get going again (if they ever stopped) and will keep sewing another hundred years. They are practically given away on marketplace or goodwill. So start up doesn't have to cost hardly anything.
A year late, but I found a full bolt of minky fabric for $10 at the thrift store! And I found a bolt of fabric for 25 cents a yard at Walmart.
Older video, but timeless topic. I am in my 60's and the good ole days for fabric for me was the 80's.
Both my mother and I sewed, and there was a fabric mill that twice a year would have a huge sale. They were in the twin cities (Minnesota) and only opened up to the public on these bi yearly sales days.
My mother was 4 hours away from the place, I was about an hour and maybe 1/2.
We made it a family event, my dad would come with and he was the "bolt carrier".
We had a blast!! Fabric was at an average of 99 cents a yard and was amazing! I still have a bunch.
Mom died a year ago, and I inherited her stash. Going through her fabrics was a trip .... happy trip down memory lane. I can still feel the excitement of the day and in finding each fabric.

@@PinCutSew It was amazing! Sewists Mardi Gras! And.... amazing times with my parents. Dad was such a a trooper carrying bolts and even finding stuff he knew Mom and I would get excited about. OMG Joannes coupons, my recent rant!! Coupons went out of control in the 80's. It's a game that's cruel to humans simply trying to survive. Charge what you want and stop playing games with people. Great video your blouse is beautiful. Tip, use flannel sheets thrifted as quilt batting, layer it up.
I agree, I refuse to plan my life around the JoAnn's add, lol! Love the flannel batting idea, I made a "summer quilt" with flannel as batting once :)
Your video was an eye opener for me. I’m going to start being more thrifty and have an eye out to try and repurpose older items before giving them away. Two years ago, I did use my husband’s old jeans and made shopping tote bags out of the bottom part of the legs. It worked great!
I made a library bag from old jeans once and I still have it 20 years later!
You can carefully trace an existing item that fits well to make your own pattern. This would be another way to save buying a pattern. I need to do this!

I do that all the time! Only thing is...I'm an impatient seamstress/tailor and usually end up making the arm holes and neck look wonky. Using a pattern generally turns out more "wearable in public" lol
A dresser for fabric storage is a great idea too. I have always had the mindset of not keeping a huge fabric stash on hand. Buying just what you need and not just storing a ton of fabric makes so much more sense. Love these useful frugal sewing tips!
Absolutely great tips!! I am going to try thrifting to see what I can find. I would love to see a how to video on how to dye with avocado pits. That just sounds fascinating and cool.

I live in the UK, and our charity shops(thrift stores in US) are now getting quite expensive, I imagine cos of rents and rates etc. but they are definitely always worth looking through. The best tip I’ve got from you, is ‘Don’t increase your storage but use the fabric and only buy more when you have room for it’ I have been guilty of massive hoarding - mostly second hand and given to me, so I didn’t feel so bad but you still have to store it and then use it! I have managed to share it with other sewists so that it can get used. I still have plenty left for all the projects I want to do but now if I want some thing for a special outfit and don’t have the fabric, I feel I can get that and make and wear it but not just fabric I like and know will make something good but don’t need right now! Thanks for another great video, you are really helping recover from my bronchitis! ❤
I share your frugal sewing philosophy. I will watch more of your videos. I try not to watch too many videos as it usually encourages me to spend and acquire more things. I find I consume less if I don’t watch stuff. I don’t like accumulating large amounts of goods for anything.

I love the idea of using sheets to repurpose.
A technique I use is dyeing fabrics. Sometimes I find a good fabric, doesn't cost much, but I don't like the color. Dyeing the fabric to my color of choice helps to keep costs low.
I have never dyed fabric, no clue on how to do that. I would dye everything purple if I learned how lol

I have become a fabric hoarder this go round at sewing. When I sewed clothing before , there wasn’t an internet to shop and impulsively purchase from. I would select my pattern and fabric at the same time in those days. Of course I had many projects underway but had the fabrics assigned to the pattern.

How about used patterns from thrift stores. The picture of the clothes have outdated fabric bur the pattern itself may be current, especially kids clothes.

I live in Oklahoma and Hobby Lobby hasn’t had patterns on sale in forever-I think it may have been last September. I wonder if they’ll ever do it again?

Our equivalent is charity shops, but you also get things like kilo sales and vintage shops (some are ridiculously overpriced, but you can get some decent prices too).
Check craigslist and facebook marketplace free section. Totally free is the best.
