- Bing AI just turned language learning on its head. AI is changing the way we learn languages, and Microsoft's AI chatbot is bringing new tools for learners. Let's explore how to speak to artificial intelligence and how it affects language education, challenging language classes and traditional study methods. It's NOT perfect by any means, but it's a powerful start, and it will only get better over time. How do you think we'll learn languages in the future?

Would you ever use AI for language speaking practice or do you think the traditional method is best?
Does this require a subscription?
@@JPspinFPV Nope, these should be free :)
Why not? I think I got to give BING AI a try for my French and Spanish.
Thank you! I played around with bing for the last hour now and will definitely make it part of my language learning routine.
Will it put Primsleur or Rosetta Stone out of business?
man I literally dived into a 3 hour session with Bing, I talked in German, Mongol and even Latin 😂 it works so good
Haha that’s awesome. You’re learning Mongolian? You’re going to be a unicorn in the language community haha 🙌🏽

How good is the Latin? I'm interested in utilising LLMs for it, but I don't want it to impart bad habits on me if the AI's Latin isn't ideal.

How do I get to Bing AI in Canada?
I can’t find the desktop entry but I downloaded the app.
Every time I try to use it, I has me sign in again and again

Learning German like crazy with GPT.
Good luck! Hope you hit your goals soon :)
Dude congrats. I need to do this with my Spanish. Do you think it’s better to use GPT or this bing method?
I'm trying to practice German too. But it reads German words as if they were English words. How can I fix this?

@@-TheMaskedMan- I think both are good.
This is awesome! Fun fact: actually, if you speak to it in English with the accent of the language you are set to, it will speak back to you in English with an accent. Not very needed, but good if you want to ask it something you don't know how to say in English instead of changing settings.
Best fun fact 🤯 That’s so cool!
and what if you ask it to answer in a specific accent? 🤔
So if I say "g'day cunt" it will talk to me in straylian
Yes it's annoying and I don't know how to fix that on mobile, in fact it was completely useless for me, gonna try browser now
🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation:
00:00 🌐 Microsoft's Bing AI is revolutionizing language learning by offering natural native conversations in various languages, making it an excellent tool for language learners.
02:56 📱 Bing AI's mobile app with voice features allows users to practice speaking languages on-the-go, providing flexibility and convenience.
07:15 🌍 Bing AI is connected to the Internet, enabling conversations about real-time events and access to vast information for personalized learning experiences.
09:44 ⚠️ Bing AI has some limitations, including limited language support, a 30-response limit per chat, and voice recognition restricted to one language at a time. Additionally, the AI can sometimes provide incorrect information, so cross-checking with other sources is advised.

@@JerryRegistreit’s literally made by an AI. Lol 😂
It's not bad, I could see this being useful for more advanced study but it's a little tricky as a beginner at the moment. First, you need to be in the language you want to speak which means it's going to start talking to you in that language and you need to be able to at least express that you want to have a dialog in that language. I was trying to get in some Spanish practice but my skills are still pretty basic so I had to look up "talk to me in spanish at a first grade level and correct my grammar mistakes" on google translate which it understood but it had some errors that it corrected in Spanish. Despite several attempts, I couldn't get the Spanish AI to correct me in English so it's not all that helpful unless you're advanced enough to understand what a subjunctive and indirect object are in the language you're trying to chat in. If you try to use a language different than what the model is set to, it will just interpret everything as English.
Yes, I have hard time to make it work with Chinese and Japanese. I couldn't even make it to "talk" in Japanese... it's not very usable at the moment unless you have a good level already
@@Ouro17 It is quite usable if you already are at an intermediate level when you can express yourself properly but making several mistakes. This is exactly my case in English: I have been learning it for the past 11 months and now I can be understounderstandod and even understand what is going on in a text or conversation, but I still speak/write like some child. In my case the AI is even more useful than a native speaker because it can satisfy a particular demand: an AI can speak avoiding Latin words I already know, focusing on that German vocab unkown to me.
It has the basic defect of all AI. It has zero 'common sense' !
That's not really true, whatever mode you have it set in you can still speak in English and he can even respond in English.
@@loot6 Ah, speaking in Spanish to the English bot didn't work out but I didn't try the reverse, good to know
This is a part of my life that I realized, with those reasons: schedule, timing, fear of making mistakes, etc., I might be understand why some people like to chat with AI rather than to a real human. To be honest, I should try it too.
It might not be for everyone, but give it a go and see if it makes things easier for you
I love this idea!! Thank you for sharing. I have been trying to learn mandarin Chinese, but I am totally shy with asking others to help because I feel it would be wasting their time. Using AI to help is so cool!
I’m glad you like this! I used to be scared to practice with friends bc I didn’t want to waste their time, so I wish I’d had this when I started learning 🙌🏽
I too am trying to learn Chinese (Mandarin). I'm really worried about getting the tones wrong. The English bot in this video is not so good, but it doesn't matter for English. In Chinese, however, the pronunciation is crucial; get the tones wrong and it will be flat out wrong.
Do you have any experience with either Bing AI or ChatGPT (or something else), and if so, which do you think is better?
Great review. Excellent quality, with relevant information and helpful hints. I didn't realize how far Bing had come along on this type of coaching/monitoring of ones speech.
Thrilled you got some value from this one 🙌🏽 A lot of progress is being made really fast…I’m excited to see what learners have access to in a year.
Wow, this is freaky. I was actually preparing the groundwork for a video really similar to this-the mobile and internet versions of Bing, using it to practice language, limitations, and all of that. It's like you're in my head. You did a better job than I I had planned though.
Thanks for the encouraging note! I'm a techie at heart, so I love tinkering with new technologies and finding ways to make life easier for language learners 🙌🏽

Scary
@@cosmicspacething3474 not really

GPT 4 has been absolutely insane recently helping me with Chinese. Giving me translations, insights, and contexts that no other platform can. Just rushing now to get a head start before everyone else on the planet also uses it to become like octa-lingual lol

@@sander_bouwhuistip to avoid getting nervous with tones: just do a lot of shadowing exercise. Once your brain knows the correct pronunciation well, it's hard to mistake it. To me the same word with different tones sounds as different as a native speaker would find it different.

Yes, This is what I am waiting for. AI teacher!!!
I am a programmer and I often see people write how AI will change the jobs for programmers, artist, writers, etc.
But if you ask me. The biggest advantage of the AI won't be copilot X or midjourney, or anything like that.
It will be AI tutors. 24/7 teachers without judgment, teachers which won't get annoyed if you ask them same question nth time. and most importantly human factor, people won't shy away from asking same question to AI, but most will be shy to ask same question 3+ times to another even if that human is willing to repeat it as many times as needed, because they didn't get it.
I am sure it will be the thing, which if correctly used will help everyone study easier with way better results, when traditional education.
It will be biggest step of education after the invention of the Press and Compulsory Education respectively.
Don't get me wrong traditional education (school) will still be necessary, because in school you learn more things than only some knowledge and good teacher is important for kids development. But the knowledge access and learning process still will be superior with AI, I think.
This was very well done. Thanks for sharing!
Really glad you enjoyed it 🙏🏽
Great video. just one question, how did you make to get the spoken answers?
Such a piece of inspiring information! Thank you, Jerry. What a pity I don't have a voice messaging available on bing AI

Hey, could you tell me how you learned Spanish? I am trying to learn myself and I'm wondering if you learned all on your own or with the help of a tutor or some sort. Glad you enjoyed the video 🙏🏽 And definitely; I put together a video detailing my full journey from 0 to fluent in Spanish here: ua-cam.com/video/YsH3B9qVShE/v-deo.html
This is actually insanely cool and helpful! I think I may still pay for a teacher however because I want to support small businesses, but this is definitely great to have!
That’s amazing! I’m doing some reflecting and writing today, and this very topic came up. I’m thinking about how we can continue to support language teachers who form the backbone of our community in the age of AI. It’s an important conversation that I think we’ll need to have as a community in the near future
If you have both, your growth will be insane
I’m an English Communication Coach for IT professionals. Thank you for continuing to support teachers. Yes, it’s nice to have that human touch and get additional feedback that AI can’t yet give.
It's not like u're supporting teachers, they're supporting students. Trust me, you're gonna need some human interaction to keep you motivated, help you out with the grammar, give u feedback and "affective filter" as we call it in language learning. AI doesn't solve everything by itself, but yeah, it can be helpful.
Off topic, Bing AI's take on thor was brutal😂. It would probably destroy nerds in a nerd argument.

I tried it out. First you have to change the language in the app. And you really have to be pretty proficient, because it will throw a lot at you at once. Having a way to control the amount of text it sends back would be nice.
Thank you for the recommendation!
Great video. Kudos for speaking two languages natively. I use Bing all the time, I hardly use Google at all.

Nice. One Question: For practice, which is better? The mobile app, or using the browser?
I usually study at home, so I personally use the desktop app (also has more languages)
It's really useful. But how to adjust settings for microphone because it sends messages too fast if I speak Spanish ?
This is another flaw, it doesn’t let you change the speaking speed. You could get around this by using your phone’s text to speech voices which should let you adjust speed in most cases. Covered this here: ua-cam.com/video/bm5SKmOdEgw/v-deo.html
Interesting idea, but after using ChatGPT in my native German, I got the feeling that its German skills aren´t as good as its English skills, meaning that it sometimes uses slightly strange style & such. Nothing too bad, as far as I remember, but if you´re trying to learn German, it might just not be as good as a real person
Just give it more time. All technology gets better overtime.
Fantastic video my friend! Thank you very much for making it :-)
W video, thanks for informing us. I'm definitely trying this out for french 🔥
This sounds like a game changer! I didn't realise the technology had come on so quickly. How are the AI voices - are they all a bit robotic or are they getting more natural?
The Spanish/English voices sound pretty good and natural to me-I’ve been studying with Bing for a few days back-to-back now, and it’s felt pretty good. I’d be curious to hear other people’s experiences with other languages
@@JerryRegistre Great. I'll have a play around with ChatGPT and Bing over the next couple of days and report back. I have been trying to get a consistent language exchange on Tandem all week with no luck, plus I'm not a big fan of video calls so this platform is really interesting to me.
The English voice is robotic as heck.
Muddles words, and pronounces (Asterixs) and , Colon etc.
It's not that great at all.
People need to stop running away like it's the bees knees.
Because as of yet, it is not.
I tried this in England. It speaks English with a British accent. The problem is that it speaks Spanish with the accent of a British person who doesn't know how to pronounce Spanish words! I criticised it for its pronunciation and it said, "I'm sorry I don't want to continue with this conversation, I am still learning!" Haha! Maybe I can fool it into thinking I am in the US?
Ah, I may be wrong, but it sounds like you might have the wrong language set in settings which is causing it to read Spanish as if it was English. Try making sure you set the actual language to Spanish before having conversations in Spanish if you want to hear native pronunciations.
The other thing you could do if you get stuck is to use your phone's native readaloud features to read the responses from Bing instead of relying on Bing's voice features. I broke down how to do that here (the ChatGPT method works here too): ua-cam.com/video/bm5SKmOdEgw/v-deo.html
Hope one of these works for you 🙏🏽

Glad it was helpful! Good luck with the Chinese! 🙌🏽
Well, I think it's not perfect for practicing my speaking. Bing chat doesn't have control over the specch recognition software that transcribes my spoken messages so it usually interprets pauses in my speech as the end of a sentence. As a beginner I sometimes need to think longer .In chatgpt you have a pluging that allows that, it doesn't get the message until you want it to get it.
Yes, I have to think of what I'm going to say before I say it, or it treats my pause as the end of what I want to say.
This is one of my gripes with it too. A workaround that may work for you is to instead use ChatGPT on your phone, and use the dictation feature on your phone as the mic. On the iPhone, the mic lets me take pauses without turning off (I tested it with a 20-second pause and it still stayed on waiting for me). This isn’t perfect, but maybe it’ll help. I’ll research some better alternatives to share with the community soon 🙏🏽

Definitely-the hallucination is the part that makes this not yet perfect. But I’m expecting that these will get better over time and be more helpful to the language community
There's nothing like going to an in-person class where you can get immediate social interaction.
A great in-person class with a supportive group is unbeatable. So this is perhaps a good alternative for people who don't have that
I think it depends on the person. 40 years ago I used to go to French classes. I didn’t get much opportunity to speak as there were 5 or 6 students and they spoke with a poor accent and faulty grammar, not the best example. I am sure one on one lessons are very useful, but I can’t afford them.

Really glad you found this valuable friend 🙏🏽 I haven’t found grammatical flaws personally, but it is capable of making mistakes technically. I would err on the side of caution and validate learnings with a teacher/ cross referencing by looking up the lesson every once in a while.
OMG!! This sounds awesome! This is amazing! I'm sort of a beginner and I don't want to change my whole computer to Spanish. Anyway, I changed the language in Bing on my Android phone, and I'm going to use only my phone for this practice. It's working fine. I've been using Bing to type text to have a "conversation" with the AI on my computer. It got boring rather quickly. This speaking to AI is something I've been wanting to do for years to learn Spanish, and now I finally, yes finally, found someone to show me how to do it.

@@JerryRegistre Ha ha! You better watch out! You're on the clock!
Seriously, thank you for this awesome video!
This seems good for a conventional language learning approach but for me personally I'm taking a different approach. I'm learning Japanese and I'm using the input method. Using that method you can get very natural accent in the language and you learn it more naturally.
For this method you want to listen to as much natives speak as you can and preferably not speak and read much early on or else you will probably pronounce the words wrong in your head. And for this approach I don't think I would want to use it's text to speak because it isn't a native talking.
If any one is interested is this approach you could find a video from Matt vs Japan (his channel specifically about learning Japanese but the input method isn't just for Japanese.)
I realize this video is about the traditional approach but I say this if you are curious about this approach
Great insight im building an app that uses this tech to help people learn languages and I thought text to speech would help but you highlighted a flaw I hadnt seent!

Good video! But I noticed something interesting in the video. Even if the language settings isnt at the right option you want to practice with, you can still start by simply saying "let's speak xxx" or "can you speak xxx?" It's like a workaround. But, you know, the language setting you choose in the settings is a pretty important decision. Sometimes, if you get it wrong, it might not work as well, though that might also depend on the situation.
Wow I tried and it didn't work well for me. Also I asked to start a conversation in Indonesian about food, and he pulled a whole summary of the Wikipedia article about Indonesian food 💀

Oooh nice clickbait answer. You've got me hooked. Pray elaborate. Don't just leave us hanging. Unless that was your intention.
How do you get Bing to "speak" the text via the speaker?
Right now, it speaks to you after you use the mic to speak a prompt to it. So if you type, it’ll type back. Also make sure voice search is on in the settings (it should be by default)
Subscribed! As someone DESPERATE to learn Mandarin (but knows no native speakers), I'm really hoping this can help. Great video!
I really hope these work for you! Check out the ChatGPT Voice video as I've heard people from the community having more success with Mandarin there over Bing: ua-cam.com/video/_J6e0JHl3C4/v-deo.html
@JerryRegistre Will do, thank you for the suggestion!
Ban AI!
Banal? Certainly! No AASL is a dealbreaker
Haha 😂 Big fan of the channel man--swing by NYC some time 🚀
Language Simp hiiii
As a language teacher in Korea, I can say that Bing hasn't KILLED traditional language learning lmao, and I think language teacher is one of the safest job against AI.
I am sure this guy isn't a language teacher..
To learn a language, you need to be excited and interested in the language and the culture. You cannot just force your brain to memorize 5000+ words and then structure those words in your brain to follow grammar rules.
Every kids I have taught, they were excited to learn because they were excited to communicate and exchange with a foreigner who is a native speaker. They could more "easily" learn from their Korean teachers, but somehow their brain underestand and remember better when I am the one teaching, because they are more excited talking to me as I am a foreigner.
Sure, an AI is good to practice language with, but barely 1% of language learners will keep the motivation to do that long enough to make any progress.
Also, as someone who has learned English as my third language within the span of a year when I was 15, I can say that there are many platforms where you can talk to foreigners online, make friends, etc. and they will be more than happy to correct your mistakes.
Not only they helped me reach high fluency in English, but I have also made life-long friendships. Most language learners know about those platforms like HelloTalk or Tandem.
Honestly, as an avid language learner, I can see potential in AI language models when I have some free time but not enough to engage in a real conversation with a friend, like when I take the bus for example. But AI will never replace a foreign native teacher or a foreign friend.
Woow, Such a great statements, thanks for sharing I appreciate it 🙏
Very insightful comment, and I agree with the 3 of you on many points.
Re: language teachers are valuable: I 1000% agree (I’m working on a video essay on the topic right now). My language teachers are some of my favorite people in the world. I think AI will help people learn in tandem with guidance from their language teachers. This is how I mainly use and intend to continue using AI.
On the value of speaking to real native speakers over AI, I also generally agree that native speakers is the better route (human connection, relationship building, on top of language learning). That said, natives have sometimes taught me wrong lessons, so it’s not full proof. And the main difficulty with this approach is that not everyone has natives around them, coordinating is too hectic for some, and some people are more introverted or face other challenges to talking to natives (e.g. sometimes, friends can help me practice speaking for an hour; AI can go for as long as I want).
So when I mention it’s killing traditional language learning, I mainly refer to AI giving an alternative to people that want to speak but find it difficult to with existing approaches.
Cheers, and really happy that you’re a language teacher. This is also an important conversation that the language community needs to have, so I’m glad we can start speaking on it 🙏🏽
but what if the speech to text doesn't even recognize my speaking?
Great vid - very nice job. Kudos!
Thanks! 🙌🏽
How to learn a foreign language:
1. Write down all of the sentences you say in one day in your native language.
2. Write down all of the typical responses.
3. Memorize both using Google translate.
That's it. There's no reason to learn the full vocabulary or verb conjugation of another language if you're never going to say those sentences.
sheesh i might try that. Thanks.

I can speak the same sentence is 10 different languages:
The trick is to go real slow. Get every syllable right.
It's weird how I've remembered the same sentences for decades now.
Schools, software, study guides... all make ths same mistake: they make it way harder than it is.
@@basicprogrammer6147 how do you go about it? do you look up the sentence that you're thinking in your native language to your target language each time or do you sit down and try to list as much as u can in one sitting
@@guywhoasked903
One sentence at a time. When I can remember that sentence days, weeks later, It's burned in my brain forever.
I don't try to memorize the responses exactly, I just try to remember the general tone and response.
So, if I ask my wife in Spanish: "What time will our daughter be home?" I can hear her say "she will be home at 6:00 pm."
See what I mean? I only learn my part.
I use only Google translate. It's great!
It's very fun to be able to speak simple sentences in 10 different languages.
Sometimes when I daytrip in downtown Chicago on the weekends, at a crosswalk, I blurt out a sentence in Greek or German, and invariably there is someone nearby who knows what I said and laughs.
English:
The people gather the apples.
Greek:
Ee anthropy muh ze von ta mee la.
What languages are you guys learning? 🙌🏽
Your review is awesome!
Thanks!
Great video!!!
This is awesome. I'm gonna try this. Thanks!
I’m glad this was useful. Rooting for you in the language adventures 🙌🏽
Game changer for me, thank you for this, will definitely help as not able to use pc at work for this but can use mobile in lunch break. Have already tried it and asked for a short story in target language, worked a treat. Just got to figure out how to do some other bits
Really happy to hear that 🙏🏽 Looking forward to hearing your story about the person who became fluent in a language just with their lunch breaks 😄
Great work, but how do you get started?
I break down in the later parts of the video how to get it on mobile and desktop 🙌🏽🙌🏽
Can anybody explain how to get Bing to 'talk' and 'hear'? (When I asked it to talk it responded in text "As a chatbot, I don’t have a physical form and I’m not capable of producing sound.")
I'm having trouble using the speech-to-text function with bing, it often ends the recording of my voice before I'm done talking. Ideally I'd have to tap once to start, tap once to end the recording and would then be able to correct any mistakes or stuttering within my response with they keypad. Is there any way this would be possible?
Great vid!
This is awesome, thanks for the video
Happy you liked it! 🙏🏽
