  • The Fenian raids, 1866 and 1870, were a mini war between the Irish Republican Army, immigrants to the United States who served in the Civil War, and the British Forces in Canada. Ultimately, the Irish retreated after a defensive attack on the border in Canada left a couple of Fenians dead.

My English ancestor fought in the American civil war at Gettysburg after he visited New York, then fought against the Irish Americans at both Fenian raids.

That’s really fascinating. Would you be happy giving me his name? I’m English myself and reenact the American civil war so I’d love to see if I could find more about him

The Fenian raid of 1866 was one of the catalysts for Canadian Confederation in 1867.
Funny thing with the Fenian raids. They figured they would take Canada and trade it for Irish Independance. The British plan at that time was if the Fenians succeeded in taking the Canadian territories, to tell them they could keep them.
