  • What keyboard or keyboards do you have? What do you use them for?
I meet so many people who don't have the money for some of the more expensive instruments. Just know that there are a lot of less expensive options out here trust me. Just do your research. Also consider what you're trying to accomplish with the instrument. What are you using it for? Production? Performing? Songwriting? Practicing?
Last but not least there are places like Americanmusicalsupply.com that allow you to purchase instruments on a payment plan.
Don't you lose your home out here trying to purchase the most expensive gear lol.

I'm glad we have similar outlooks on this. I used the same $300 keyboard for 10 years (88 fully weighted keys with a good piano sound, and just four other sounds). It worked great the entire time. I finally upgraded to a $500 keyboard a few months ago. Don't break the bank unless you know you're going to stick with it and use it on a regular basis.

I started learning guitar 13 years ago on a 150$ piece of garbage. It wasnt til I was 9 years in that I bought a nice guitar. But I do have to say, my first guitar was so bad I had to really be accurate and perfect to not let it sound like shit. When I upgraded I couldn't believe how hard I had to work with the crap one. But it made me better. Having to struggle for awhile.

I remember the time I first played piano at church when the wind blew so hard and blew my notes, and the drumbeat started playing in the middle of a worship song. It was an old Casio piano, that still rocking to this day.

Yeah a lot of times, its the person behind the instrument that sounds amazing and not necessarily the instrument itself. I taught a younger kid to play the drums years ago and now that young man can run circles around me with LOL with a lot less on a drum set. Makes me proud!

I use a Yamaha YPG 225 at home..AND it can stack strings with piano and split bass…And I love it. I’ve never been impressed by overspending. I use a Motif at church and it’s a really nice board, but truthfully I only use three different tones on it, and I haven’t figured out what what all the other buttons do. 😂😂

I splurged on a Macbook for Mainstage. Now I can play any cheap piano with a USB port and get amazing sounds. I don't really want expensive keyboards now. I just want a million low end weighted keyboards so I can have one everywhere and never have to pick up another keyboard again. I'm married so the days of impressing the ladies lugging a keyboard around with one arm are over, haha.

We had a PSR-740 in my house. I learned a lot on that instrument. I gave up piano lessons as a kid, but gradually started messing around on this keyboard and began to understand the relationship between chords and keys and got so much back into it that a few years later I went back to piano lessons and became a professional musician! Thanks to the PSR-740. Those speakers sound great!

This dude is a trip. 😃 The only people hating are other musicians. I was gigging with Yamaha and Casio for years. Some musicians were surprised when they heard my $100+ keyboards after I got through layering and connecting to my iPad for more sounds. If you are not doing serious piano playing like classical or something those Yamaha and Casios rock. Especially when the drummer don’t show up. 😃 Auto accompaniment can go a long way. I’m right now waiting for just the right cheap keyboard to use. I got rid of my main Casio not too long ago for a midi controller. In some ways I miss it.

I had the DGX-205 for 8 years, and I used the heck out of that keyboard. So much in fact, that the Db3 key is super sensitive, and can't even press it without it blaring. I still have my 16 custom sound presets on there, but outgrew it, and am now using the Roland Juno. It's great! But had I got it as my first keyboard, my parents wouldn't have been able to pay the car note. There is a set time for everything. We just have to tap into that time that God set for us and roll with it. Like an armadillo.

All so true! I'll add to the argument with a little experience of mine: I've been playing acoustic guitar for a bit over 10 years now and I got some ease to compose, but I felt like the guitar was limiting me into some arrangements (not enough fingers! I guess I was the limiter haha), so I got a used keyboard for about 70 USD. Spent 6 months with it. Basically never played it. I guess it wasn't the time, I wasn't putting up enough practice for many reasons, so I eventually sold it for the same 70 USD. Recently I got into virtual music production (using Cakewalk by Bandlab) and I can finally express what I wanted on the keyboard through the virtual keyboard. It's been working wonders for me, and I know I'll eventually get another keyboard once things get better post-pandemic and give it another try. Always start cheap, friends. You never know.

Beautiful sound! The Motif was my sister's first YES 20 years ago! I don't feel the need to get a super expensive keyboard, I have a Casio CS 800 this day, I still play it even after the year 2006 and the only reason why I want to get a new keyboard is to see, is there a keyboard that goes down below A0?? I came across one that goes down to that note but it was terribly expensive and I did not like the sound, but I am interested in the bosendorfer grand piano, but I don't have the money yet( still waiting to become a successful writer) and I don't have the space for it LOL. Start with what you can afford and LEARN THE INSTRUMENT!!! Once you grow to the point where you literally cannot do what you want with your current instrument, go read the manual. If you do that and still can't do what you want, go rethink your approach. If you STILL come back with the same conclusion, go put on sackcloth and ashes and go fast and pray for 30 days. Then and only THEN if your STILL are at the same conclusion, then you might maybe somewhat possible might want to possibly potentially consider a new instrument... potentially.

Soundman. I don't plays keys for squat. I play trombone. Seems like often times the expensive keyboards get lost in the mix. Players be blaming for them getting quiet because they didn't practice to know the songs. They want to be maximum volume on the one song they know, knowing their name is not on the Marquis or even on the program in the liner notes. Be nice. The drummer and the horns will cover for you if you let them have a slice of the monitor mix.
