I love their faces at the end, both quietly contemplating everything they just went through. And the way he just gently kisses her head to let her know he's with her and they're safe now... What an episode. I also like that the show wasn't afraid to acknowledge that in such an extreme moment, the Doctor never would have reasonably been able to differentiate between the two Donnas. And he knew it too. I'm pretty convinced he only asked the Mrs. Bean question because he didn't want to let on what he was actually doing, and then he just grabbed one of them and started scanning. Poor real Donna though, lol. She really thought that was it for a minute. Heck, even I was incredibly stressed out.

Ok so like what are the restrictions of the Tardis's time travel? Like if he realised an hour later that Donna wasn't Donna couldn't he just come right back to the point he left?
Sometimes yes, sometimes no. Doctor Who likes to throw around the term "fixed point in time" anytime they need to keep time travel from creating a plot hole like that
another explanation used during Tennant's first run was that The Doctor becomes a part of established events once there, he can't cross back into his own timestream to change it (this changes depending on the writer and the episdoe lol)

It's a theme that keeps coming back over and over again in all Gold seasons. Most famous example on the soundtrack is "Locked on" from series 6. Gold really has a soft spot for it!

@@kj3105 I've been thinking about that part. The non-Donna gave a logical, realistic answer that the real Donna would have given...under NORMAL circumstances. Under stress, however, REAL people tend to not think like they normally would and the REAL Donna gave a more frantic basic answer, not able to think of how to convince the Doctor while she was so stressed out. The non-Donna's answer was more of an indicator that she was the wrong one.
I think the point was that there was no way to tell, that he was just planning on grabbing one, scanning to check, then either leaving or tossing the monster and grabbing Donna.
That's pretty fucked up that he just didn't take both so that the real Donna isn't at risk and just figure out which one is real later instead of just doing a 50 50 guess. The mf nearly got her killed haha. It's not like the fake one is capable of killing them in the Tardis. Also this would've been a good opportunity to give the two a character arc of trauma, additionally that their space travel is far too dangerous and risky. But they just visit Wilf like nothing had ever happened tsk tsk tsk. Sloppy writing.
I'm guessing the reason is probably that he didn't want to let on what he was doing. By choosing one of them, he made Not-Thing Donna believe they had already won. For him, that was probably the more efficient option --- get their guard down, scan, and then eject if they turned out to be the wrong one. I agree it put poor Donna through a lot of extra pain, but I can kind of see the logic behind it. The Doctor doesn't like to go back on his own timeline, so he wanted to make sure the imposter was on the ship and out the way before it blew up. Not-Thing Donna was a huge threat, especially considering they clearly had Donna's Metacrisis memories and therefore probably would have known as much or almost as much as the Doctor.
Did you see how quickly the not-things adapted to the concepts of shape, time, and space? Not to mention how they learned the captain had to kill herself to stop them from learning about what she did, meaning they could copy EVERYTHING about their victims shockingly fast. If he took in the fake one, it had a very real chance of either killing Donna, or worse - copying everything about the Doctor, especially all his knowledge, including the knowledge he had FORGOTTEN, then killing the doctor and using that to manipulate the TARDIS to its own ends. Thinking that you could ever be safe around these things would be a horrible mistake, especially since he didn't know fully what they were capable of, or what could remotely contain them ( they already learned to ignore salt).
With that forehead kiss I’m definitely not buying the just friends-mates thing…I never did…they both have too much chemistry with each other in the tv show and audiobooks… plus she’s the only one who can stop him and is the closest to his equal as possible, imo…even before the metacrisis.
