Every Basketball Player Needs to Have A Shooting Slump

  • I shot an outrageously bad 22% from 3 point range during conference play in my last year of college, and in this video, I’m gonna talk about how that shooting slump was the best thing that could have happened to my basketball career, and my life.
    I still cringe a little bit when I go back and look at my three point percentage from league play of my fifth year of college basketball. This was a year when expectations were extremely high and I was supposed to perform. And I’m not going to lie, telling this story is difficult for me. But the thing that really made me continue through with this video idea is the whole point of making this in the first place. No one actually cares about my three point percentage, except me. So with that off my chest, let's talk about how I went from hitting 8 3s in the dome against Syracuse in November of last year, to not being able to throw a rock in the ocean in just a month.

    When I was 14 years old I had a shooting slump in a tournament and it felt like it was the end of the world at that moment, but like you, I just kept shooting, kept practicing and eventually the slump ended. Then I perfected my form, and kept shooting almost everyday. Now I'm 18, I'm one of the best shooters of my area and this season (my senior season) I have shot 45% from three in 9 games, I'm excited for the second half of the season, now I have a next shot mentality and like you said in another video, I will try to not react to mistakes, and to feel like curry when I'm shooting it well. Thanks for the videos, you have helped me a lot these past couple of weeks; keep it up and good luck overseas!

    I had a very bad slump begining of my senior year of highschool went 0/6 from 3 2 airballs and one side of back board but I ended up on a hot streak last ten games for the season scoring 15+ ppg and even having a game hitting 6 threes on senior night so you right basketball can get you through some of the hard things in life.

    This is exactly what I've been looking for. I just started my first varsity season and I consider myself an elite shooter, and so do my coach and my teammates. However we're now 7 games in and I am shooting 0% from the 3 point line on a whopping 25+ attempts. I've honestly never seen as many in and out shots as I have this season. I usually played big PF/C at least when I was on JV in my freshman year, but now since I'm not crazy tall (I'm 6'1) and have a coach who understands I need build a future, I am suddenly being pushed to sg, which I think is a good change, but the pressure is a lot and I don't fully know what I'm doing yet.

      @TuckerRichardson  5 місяців тому +1

      Shooting slumps can happen to anyone at any time. They are so difficult because you never know when they are going to end, but you have to realize that at some point it will end, you will get out of it. I think it is great you are playing SG, because that is a position where you can work on all the necessary skills needed to grow as a player. Keep working and I hope those in and out shots start to fall!

    I think after a few days a slump becomes mental when you go down a dark road and start overthinking things to fix your shot when you can keep shooting and you’ll start making it

    • @TuckerRichardson
      @TuckerRichardson  7 місяців тому

      Yes exactly it becomes a hundred percent mental. That’s is why you have to get in front of it ahead of time and not let it get to a really bad point.

    I’m not really in a shooting slump, I’m just NOT the greatest shooter for sure. I’m young so I have a lot of time to work on it but I don’t know how to make my shooting just explode being so much better. My midrange is really good though. I rarely miss midrange especially in practice but my three just isn’t quite there yet. Is there any tips for helping that?

  • @toppaine4008

    I just recently kinda got out of my shooting slump even though my three-point is still pretty bad. The shooting slump was horrible I hate myself so much for random airball even how close it is and not being able to get enough strength to frickin shoot

    • @TuckerRichardson
      @TuckerRichardson  7 місяців тому

      Remember, negative self talk like saying "I hate myself" will only lead to more struggles. At the end of the day you have to remember you get to play basketball. Such a fun game, and the stakes are a lot lower than we tell ourselves. If you really want to get better though, it certainly starts with getting the reps in at the gym!

      I think small slumps happen to everyone. Maybe you struggle for a game or 2. If it keeps happening more often than that, it might be a form issue, so you have to make a decision as to whether or not you need to tweak something in your shot or continue with your form as is and just stay confident.
