    Dual spiders right? What about tinsel leads? Just 1 strand or several sewn into cone? Anything in the design to make it handle more power than it's rated. Sundown and other high end competition subs boast certain features that let their speakers handle extremely high wattage. Not sure(besides their high efficiency) that they could compete with todays companies.

    One thing that I took notice of immediately with the newer design stroker is how you’re really similar it is to the Savard high Q 12 inch. If you look at them in a profile manner they’re essentially the exact same speaker. I own the Savard Pro 12 which uses the same basket as one of the models of Orion. But that being said speaker designs are basically cut and paste from a different manufacturer is nowadays. But I have not seen any other speaker that looks so similar to the new Strokers as the Savard hi-q 12”. The Savard hIQ is actually a bit pricier but at least you know with Savard it was built in the US.

      Thanks buddy. I found a good video with a walk around of a new Stroker. It's made in China but is vented through the pole and drilled to the coil gap for cooling. It does have the ability to adjust the front spider to tune to different frequencies like the original. The fact that the added cooling of the coil adds no additional thermal power handling makes me question the quality of that coil. The finish on the machined parts is top notch on the original and so-so on the new. I will say that machined finish isn't what it used to be so it's par for the course in today's manufacturing. I think performance wise you could expect similar numbers. Durability may or may not be in question. Either way I would go with the known quality and longevity of the original and be patient and find a pair of originals saving a couple grand in the process. Thanks for the feedback.

    doesn't the construction of the cone diameter and construction of the voice coil and construction of the basket also play a part I'm asking not informing because I don't know but notice these things mentioned when researching speakers to purchase?

    • @brentb5303
      @brentb5303  6 років тому +1

      I would guess that your asking if the materials used and how they were assembled play a role? Yes, would be my answer if I'm interpreting construction the correct way. I wasn't sure if you were referring to it in that way or in reference to the mechanical engineering as construction or maybe both. Either way I'm glad you brought this up. I spent 16 years working in machine shops and have done it all from shipping and receiving, setting up and editing programs on CNC machinery, and working with mechanical and manufacturing engineers. Over the span of my career (which I walked away from because living in a dirty shop for 60 hours a week will wear on you unless that's your jam), I have witnessed many changes to the manufacturing process with some being in a positive direction and some going in a negative direction. In my opinion globalization has impacted consumer products in two major ways: There is a race to the bottom in materials used and finished part quality. There has been mind blowing advancements in efficiency and automation. Those two are not mutually exclusive. From the mid 90's(When the original was produced) to today (the current model) manufacturing is completely different in almost all aspects when it comes to consumer goods manufacturing in most cases. The glut of cheep Chinese goods, which the American public has voted for with their wallets, have changed the expectations of consumers of what they should expect from a product. A fancy 4 color printed box with dubious claims of specks and a ton of marketing wank is to be expected. A manual that barely explains the product you just purchased and repeats the same crap on the outside of the box. The products themselves place an emphasis on form over function i.e. led lights, plastic and cheap metals used to make the product look beefier or more advanced than it actually is. Fit and finish of products is tricky because technology has improved fit due to tighter tolerances being achievable but in my experience finish suffers when you mass produce machined parts in rapid succession. All this being said materials used and what adhesives you used to assemble them, the way in which the the voice coil dissipates heat and how it maintains linearity within the coil gap. The tightness of the coil gap. The amount of magnetic force exerted on the voice coil. The thickness of the top plate. The pole piece. The shape and rigidity of the cone. The compliance of the surround and spider will all play a role. I have NOT in person seen a new Stroker. Judging by the pictures they did their best to make the new one look and function like the original but the top spider doesn't appear to be adjustable like the original but I could be wrong. The cast basket looks beefy on both as does the magnets. The original just looks better in my opinion but to each his own. If I had the choice between a pair of new in box originals or the new ones I would take the originals but that is just me.

      I just found a video of a walk around of the new Stroker. It is adjustable on the front. It was engineered and designed by at least one of the engineer's of the original. The pole is vented as the original was not and the coil gap was also vented as the old was not. It's kind of inconsequential because they both have the same power handling so thermal dissipation is a moot point. Basically they are trying to recreate the original which is an admirable goal.

Also there are videos here on youtube of both the old and new strokers. They share one almost exact feature. The dope coated fabric surround. I will take a closer look and get back to you but that was a major limiting factor of overall throw mechanically. I have the name of the manufacturer of those surrounds. I'll have to get ahold of them and see if they made both. You could be right though. Id be more than happy to make a correction video if that turns out to be the case. Ok so far what I can confirm is that you are correct about it being peak to peak in the old manual and says as much because it's very transparent. The new Cerwin Vega which is, produced cheaply overseas, unlike the original company, which is indisputable. That is home and car audio, across their entire product line. The new Stroker classic pro is probably made just fine but on the cheap. Make no mistake about it. Their manual list x-max as peak to peak as well as for every Stroker made overseas thus far but I can find no manual online for the newest one. So the previous three and if you count the original four manuals list the stat as peak to peak but only the original list it as peak to peak and also list next to that x-max one way. Is this new statistic?I have only found listed on sonic electronics sales pageI'll keep digging I'm going to get to the bottom of this for you guys. Is there even a manual for it? The Cerwin Vega web site doesn't even have statics for the new sub. I had to get the one's for this video from sonic electronics sales web page. I'll keep digging for you though.

    Having seen performance specs of these stroker CVs, they do not keep up with modern, much-less-expensive subs. They aren't worthwhile unless you are a retro geek that wants to relive the past and are willing to pay more for inferior gear.

      I appreciate your long response and dedication to Cerwin Vega and old-school car audio. I too have long been a fan of car (and home) audio...having worked for MTX/xTant making amplifiers and speakers...and also selling all manners of home and car audio equipment.
      It is your money. Spend it how you see fit. If you like it, great!

    • @crazy8sdrums
      @crazy8sdrums 6 років тому +1

      MTX and Xtant were made under the same roof, in Phoenix Arizona...by the same people....one of which was me. Rockford Fosgate made their gear about 1.5 miles away from the MTX plant. Orion made their gear about 1.5 miles away from the MTX Plant. JL Audio is about 1.5 miles from where MTX is. Everything has changed though, and most stuff is now made in China or S Korea. I don't like the idea of buying foreign made audio gear...but they do make some outstanding gear at prices that are hard to ignore. These CV strokers do not compete with some of these Asian-made subs that cost a fraction of the CVs.
      CV would have been much smarter to design and make something to compete with the other modern gear rather than dredge up the archaic stroker stuff. The strokers had their time, but the competition caught up to and then exceeded them.
      I compare this to the 'hipsters' that dump thousands into turntables to play LPs just to get the sound of LPs which are far from high quality and are quite noisy. They pay lots of cash to have lower quality sound but have the retro value.
      ...and that is all OK. If you enjoy the end result, it is money well-spent. I just think one can do better with the same amount of money or less.
      Right now, I have 2 SoundQubed amps powering 8 mids/tweets + 2 12" Rockville subs. (Yes, Rockville subs...75$ a piece... but they farkin whoop serious ass for how little money I spent on them....though I am considering replacing them with SoundQubed subs should they fail.)

      I am not at all pleased that almost all of these companies offshored their shit. Almost every maker of almost everything offshored their shit and it resulted in an inferior USA. Probably 98% of car audio gear is made in Asia now...and if you want to bump, you have to buy Asian made stuff. If you want your ride to be bumping, you have to buy Asian stuff...and it turns out that we can find terrific value. I don't find fault in being excited about car audio gear, even if it is made in another nation...especially because almost all of it is made there. Should I let politics and capitalism deprive me of an appreciation of a car that bumps?
      I really do hope that we can bring more of that audio gear back to the US...but it is what it is and I will be bumping in my car anyway. All these companies we once loved sold us and the US out... If they sold us out, how much should we value them now? I chose not to buy new RF for that reason.... I chose not to buy new MTX for that reason... I chose not to buy Orion for that reason...
      Here is another interesting thing to think about.... Trump and the haters that hate him. I am assuming you might bump rap in your whip...because bump it does and it sounds fucking badass to be bumping! Trump has been the only force at work trying to bring US manufacturing back to the US and is succeeding at it...and most of the rappers hate him for it. It amuses me....these fucking rappers rap all day long about how much they like making money and pimping bitches and selling drugs to beats that bump like mad in our subwoofer-equipped whips...and they hate the fucking guy who most represents capitalism and pimping... These rappers want this gear made in China and Korea, because the demand to make the stuff here is 'racist'....
      So, what do we do? We just do the best we can with what we have and bump our whips the best way we know how...even if it must be Asian made gear for now. I am hoping Trump, or some other force, can bring US manufacturing back to the US....but the car audio gear isnt there yet.

The original Stroker had some small batch machined parts and although it is a paper pulp cone there is a photo of a guy who is at least 250lbs standing on one of the 18's on the Cerwin Vega fan site. They ran between $600-1000 for the 12"-18" variants. They are very well made and sound amazing but I only have this 12 because I got it for $90 a few years ago. If money is no object I would say the Strokers are a very good choice. For the rest of us. Insanely priced. They are very nice drivers though.

My point and I stand by it is that the original stroker was an amazing achievement in transducer design. Where you make it doesn't matter but if want to justify the cost it's hard to explain why you're charging so much for something thrown together in a build house.

    Strokers are really cool vintage drivers they have a big place in the subwoofer history and what we have today probably is because of cerwin Vega's ingenuity, but the design is sooo out dated.. the original was just a repurposed pro audio sub for car audio spl competition pretty wild back then but we are way past that technology. Basically as far as a car audio subwoofer in a modern age the stroker pro is a colossal terd..imo any SPL specific sub is a terd in every way (other than making crazy loud buzzing noise) it's a gimmick that never caught traction but because of it's uniqueness people are still willing to spend a butt load of money for a new version fancy pro audio sub, Nostalgia can be expensive.

      I think there cool enough after I finish up some sub builds I have a stroker tribute build, I have a 18" 188c cerwin Vega pro audio bass driver that came from a bass guitar set up and resto mod build, it came with a 8.30" single slug motor with a 3l8" top and bottom plate and has a 3/4"x3" coil. I have the motor apart my plan is to replace that slug with two 8.25x.75 slugs, replace the pole with a 3/4" or 1" taller pole and add a 3/8" pole extension rod and for $88 I can get a 18" stroker recone kit that has a 1" tall winding width 3" coil and mill an adjustable spider clamp for the top to utilize that top spider, all in all for $50 in ferrite an $88 recone I'll have what looks and performs like an old school stroker for $138...that's a far cry from a real stroker, and I'm not doing it because I think they work so well just for fun. I will do something with it maybe a selectable auxiliary rock music sub for my home theater one that I can switch back n forth with my HT sub amp, That would probably work killer for that seems that's where it would shine, especially where 18" pros have such a high sensitivity it would have great output on just 250wrms... I love building drivers now there's such a self gratification to say I built that sub it's full custom.

I just went to slamology and the only thing I heard there that I would compare is the Hutchinson audio subs. The sundown and the like need thousands of watts to do their thing. Hutchinson's demo was brutal and they were running a fraction of the watts the other guys were. I talked to the really friendly people who make the Hutchinson subs in South Dakota USA. They are all about high efficiency which is exactly what made the Stroker great. Due to advancements in technology and materials the dual spider design of the Stroker isn't necessary for maintaining linear movement of the coil in the gap. Their big boy subs cost less than the new Strokers. Personally I would go with them over the new Stroker. The original Stroker can be found for good prices and I might run some if I find the right deal. I love my JL 18w6's so I'm not in a hurry to replace them but two Stroker 18's would walk all over them with the same power used.

But who really knows, everybody from back in the day says they were the best and even now some of them argue to say that they prefer the sound of them over anything else. I've never personally heard strokers, but I've owned Cerwin Vega speakers before, and I'm talking about the classic ones before they went to China, maybe one day I'll put a 15 inch stroker in a 4 cubic foot box, and just see how it sounds.
