There's something triumphant about seeing the undying essence of the person shining through the mortal illness. Of course he's sick, but he's still Frank Zappa, the courage and intelligence intact, the generosity and warmth for a friend. Death be not proud. You only killed his body. You couldn't lay a hand on his mind or spirit.

Despite his illness, Frank's eyes light up when he talks about his friend and mentor Slonimsky. In the end, our relationships are the most important things in life, either treasured or regretted. The struggles to overcome life's obstacles are more precious than the material wealth that success brings. Communion with nature and the spiritual world are also treasures. You can find just as much happiness fishing from the bank as from a bass boat. This is what I learned from losing 2 close friends to cancer quite young in the space of 3 years

The most worrying, and depressing, thing about living in the 21st century, is that 99% of "life's obstacles," we must overcome, are man made, either by the corrupt society laws and rules we live under, or from our own troubled minds. Its a very sad fact that we live under a regime that promotes the illusion that "material things" are important, and so to be reached for at all cost. Whatever man's original role on this earth was/is, it definitely was not the forced slavery to the corporate elite role we play today. Communion with nature and the higher development of one's spiritual self, above all else I believe, must of been close to our original role here, but today we find ourselves so out of touch with the most basic awareness of the natural earth, that such ideas are in themselves alien to most people. The destruction and rape of our planet and its resources, the extinction of species on an international scale goes on unobstructed in the name of progress and industry, but in all honesty is just the greed of the corrupt few, right at the top. Frank Zappa was a genuine person in a 100% corrupt and greed driven business. Genuine people, without agenda of any kind, are a very very rare species in the 21st century, along with common sense. You enter this life with nothing, and its a certain fact that you will leave the exact same way, with nothing, so enlightenment and spiritual growth must be key. We understand so very little of this mystery, and are misled and told untruths and lies at every turn, starting as children in preschool, and continued throughout our entire existence to keep us off course. I try to steer my ship by the old adage of, "Treat others as you yourself would want to be treated," and, "If it feels wrong, it probably is wrong."

I'm a guitarist, musician, father and husband at 50 years old. I am just now getting into Frank Zappa. Yes, this is sad to watch but to be honest, it's a natural part of life and cancer has impacted so many of us. If you’ve ever lost someone to cancer you know what I mean.
However, unlike many who have passed in silence, Frank has left us a large amount of music, videos, writings, thoughts and of course, his children, as representative of what a person can leave behind. For me at 50, I continue to be inspired by others and now, I have so much of Frank to absorb. Those bits of him that inspire me, as I create music with my kids, will be passed along to my 5 children and that’s very cool and unique.
    Thank you Frank!!!!

I cry sometimes listening to Franks music, and the thought that he has now gone. The marvellous melodies in his slow numbers show how he could have tapped into mainstream 'pop' music, but he chose to push boundaries - both musical and ethical. I grew up listening to this man and his various bands' incarnations, and am wiser for it. Cheers Frank. Love you forever.

I see people saying that they hate seeing Frank Zappa this way.
Well, I lost my mother to cancer. She was 49.
Of course at the last stages she was a mere shadow of hee former self... BUT
She was a fighter. She never lost her will for life, her humour, her integrity. It would be unfair for her to say that I don't want to remember her like that. I also remember her like that. I admire her life as a whole. And for me she is a winner.
So, I want you all to reconsider.
Isn't it a bit selfish to choose how you want to see a person? Why is that? Because you CAN'T relate. You cannot admire a sick person. Well, that's selfish for sure.

There are a few problems with your story. 1. You say you started "listing" to him (presumably, you mean "listening") because your teacher skipped him. But you also say you questioned the teacher and got angry at his reply; why? If you'd never heard Zappa before, why would you have an opinion? 2. You clearly skipped English appreciation, and that doesn't seem to bother you.

It is difficult to watch. It is hard to see because it is sad. Nobody is complaining. Nobody is implying that he should have been doing something different. It is just sad to see him in that state and know what is coming. That is why it is “difficult” to watch.

I lost my elder sister 33 years ago, then my mother 4 years later, then my father 2 years later, then my second elder sister in November 2019.
All of them wiped by cancer.
I have never watched this interview (start the video and immediately stop it) not because it hurts me in any way but because I have tons of videos in UA-cam to remember Frank Zappa at his best and that's how every single person should be remembered.

He was a musical mastermind. And even on his death bed he still talks about his love for his work.

i always tear up watching this. my cousin exposed me to zappa at 11 years old and expanded my horizons before i was even a teenager. frank is the reason i love music and listen to a wide variety of genres today at 24 but most importantly he taught me even when we go through rough times, music can always make you smile.

I remember when I scored the "Shut up and Play yer Guitar" box set in 1985. I always knew Frank could play, but the bloke was much better than people give him credit for. He even played the guitar satirically, ripping off Hendrix and Santana, among others. He was to music as, say, Robin Williams was to comedy - endlessly inventive, spontaneous, totally inimitable. Occupied a sphere of his own.

If there was one man I could bring back to life it would be Frank Zappa! Such great songs with such crazy lyrics and fantastic solos. Also such a brilliantly clever and interesting person he was. RIP Frank Zappa.

It’s so hard to see someone in this shape. He was an amazing musician, producer, coordinator, father and more. He didn’t care if he was remember as he said in a interview before he lost his battle with prostate cancer. But his legacy and everything he blessed us with can never be erased or forgotten. Thank you Frank!!!!

His playing was off the charts but one of the things that truly impressed me about him was that he NEVER did drugs..nothing. And the fact that he came up in the 60's? WOW. It just showed how different this man was. RIP Frank!
