And now a year later the Duo 2 has a pretty great camera but with a big Galaxy style hump. Some reviewers vary on whether they think it compromises the design. Some don’t like it can’t like perfectly flat for note taking some example. I’m torn as having a much better camera is a big plus, but they had a good camera in the Lumia 950 etc without much of a hump so feel they could reduce that back for version 3. I bought a Duo 1 as a companion device alongside iPhone 13 mini and will consider a Duo 3 next year as hoping they’ll really nail it and get those bezels slimmed right down
Gabriel Coman I know right I you can constantly hear him throw it on the desk. Which made me happy because I tend to set my Phone down the same way and now I know it can withstand my bad tendency’s
I'm waiting for slim bezels, better and more cameras, zoom, etc, integrated pen (like Samsung Note), wireless charging, and a sub $1k price. I'll be waiting a very long time!
Before watching this interview, I watched a review on the Duo that was negative & had me almost convinced to pass on it. After hearing Panos Panay talking so inclusively & customer centric, with the passion of the builders, engineers,& techs, I am now sold on the phone. I realize there will be a learning curve to utilizing all its capabilities, but I had to take classes to 1st learn Word, Access & Accel. I believe now this is the next step toward the future of tech. Thanks Panos. Thanks Microsoft.
Completely agree, but I still can't see past the seam down the middle. Not so much for watching videos since the aspect ratio on other foldables don't give that much more screen, but on games it's a big difference.
8:45. Truth. That's what's most interesting to me. Using two screens instead of one big one is so much more productive to me. I'd MUCH rather have my two 27" screens on my desktop than 1 ultra wide monitor. Maybe I'm behind the times, but multitasking is so much easier, more intuitive with two screens IMO. I don't have this yet, but I'm seriously considering trading in my Note 9 for it.
IMO. Having one 1 ultra wide is more effective than having two 24 inch. and I personally enjoy it better. I have the had latter for years. That’s because there are quick tools on PC/MAC to snap and use that space effectively
@@tomlee45 I can see your and Jared's point. I might be behind a bit on the desktop side. However I still think I'd prefer this over a Fold for example. If for no other reason I can tent this thing. I can't imagine holding the unfolded Fold on a plane to watch a video or something. This seems more versatile in that regard. I think I'm gonna give it a try.
I upgraded from the Note 9 and I highly recommend the Duo. I have not been this happy and excited about a piece of tech since probably my first touchscreen. What Lew said about holding it being so much different than just seeing it is so true. I was pretty sold on it but would not preorder one until I put my hands on it. I was able to use the display model at Best Buy for about 5 minutes and it was game over. To anyone on the fence still, just get your hands on it.
Really great interview. I would like to have heard a tad at the end for where the Duo is going and to actually discuss the initial software issues so users have some confidence they know about them and will support us. I got the Duo day one but returned it due to bugs. I really love the hardware but too many initial bugs. If they address them, I'll reconsider purchasing again.
Probably that's one of the topics they discussed not addressing before the interview took place. Also, he doesn't believe it is a deal breaker but to me good phone camera is mandatory at this stage. If they want me to ditch my Pixel for their Duo, then they have some camera work to do 😉
Yeah, he should have talked about what the duo does great and is supposed to do and what it does good enough. Like the surface pro vs ipad pro, for me surface pro is very good at productivity laptop and good enough tablet. But 0 tolerance for bugs like surface pro 4 ghosting display (when surface is getting hotter) problem or battery replacement problems (done by microsoft support). Like duo good enough camera and gaming. Duo great at productivity apps and side by side use of apps, even single apps dividing on the 2 screens.
Awesome interview - products typically address a customer need or define one. I purchased my Surface Duo because I really appreciate the flexibility of a true two screen device. The Duo starts with this concept and builds upon it rather than trying to be all things for every customer.
tyncam24 this is so true I plan to get the Duo because I’m always watching something on my phone and my biggest bet peeve is needing to pause it to go and respond to a message, I want to look up a actor that looks familiar but can’t figure it out or the long list of other reasons that make me stop what I’m doing to go do. The only feature this phone is missing that made my pause before deciding to get it is 5g but I guess I will go another year without that
You guy's know the LG v60 is not even half the price and doesn't have buggy software also you can get rid of the extra screen when you don't need it and just want a regular phone.
I've asked this question before of other people but I'm curious to know what you see as the difference between a device that has a cover screen as a separate accessory that gives you dual screens and the surface duo.
I thought I saw something where MS has some kind of trade-in program where you can trade in an old device and get a discount on the Duo. Not sure how that works though.
No, its actually because we hear double sound. From the recording of the actual headphones, and from the google meet/zoom/microsoft team that lew use, and picked up by the mic
@@Alvin-Nukman yes, I can imagine how different the sound quality of lew from the perspective of Panos can be. they're recording his voice through the call through zoom or whatever service while they are recording themselves locally not through the call plus they're using a separate huge mic not a headphone or laptop/pc mic.
Well I'm sure they know that but this phone will be pushed mostly for business people so I don't think they need a fancy triple lens camera, just one that take decent pictures.
Actually I thought that the camera was trash. But now we've got some direct comparison between Duo and other flagship cameras... to be honest, it's pretty acceptable during daylight. I mean very acceptable!
@rrobertt13 Turning the screen off doesn't do much. It lights up, flashes and makes noises when you have incoming messages. I agree with his statement on disconnecting. I actually turned off all notification buzzers and only have notifications via widgets. I also have two launches; one for work and one for personal. It allows me to focus and I actually do find that when I leave work and close the work launcher then I feel like I'm closing a chapter. And it does provide me with peace of mind. Try it before you criticize it.
@rrobertt13 Well they use their i phones for calls they use their duo to read your sad comments on one screen and on the other screen order the new apple device for them selves happy life no matter what screen their looking at on their duo
I can't think of a time when the opportunity to take customers from Apple was as possible as it is now. Hope the Duo works and becomes more affordable. At $1,399.00 I start leaning towards upgrading my laptop and keeping in the sub $500 phones, which even at the sub $500 level do more than I need it to given my laptops power and features. Calls, texts, notifications and photos all function at an acceptable level for me in midrange phones. I'd rather have the over $1000 investment in my laptop.
No lie, I love the concept of this device! There’s something about it that gives off a more futuristic vibe than even the Fold 2 (in MY opinion). I’m excited to see where this concept will end up in the future! Great interview!
Let's all be honest, we don't use our smart phones for calls these days. Like even then we all use Bluetooth headsets or earphones. The surface duo can fit into the smartphone genre.
Duo 4 years old project , I believe they trying to make super cool android with Microsoft apps kind a small laptop. 2021 no more smart phone, they become a pc & laptops . A14x best example for how apple wants to create mobile platforms for laptops. I think your from developed countries. Pandmic helps them to transform something into something. I think you're belongings some particular segment in the phone market. Nokia still alive.
It all depends i have a desk job and when I get a call or have to conference call I still pick up my phone the old fashion way. I think the majority of people that still take calls are people that work in a job that requires you to communicate with people rapidly and frequently. For example im a sales man.. I on average, make 15 to 20 calls a day. I get that im in a small demographic but we do still exist.
Great interview. Almost all of the reviews I have watched on the duo completely miss the point of the phone. Instead they focus on the camera as if everyone is photographer and the buggy software (which will get better). Apple fan boy here and have never had an android phone. I did however purchase the duo and am very much enjoying it. Even with its current short comings it is a great phone. Someone has finnaly provided something new, innovative, and useful. As for the price I really don't see what all the complaining is about its not that far off a note 20 ultra. I'm sure the iPhone 12pro will cost just as much. Yes it's no $500 phone but it would be delusional to think it could be released at that. Last year's processor is more then enough who is actually maxing out these processors with day to day use. It's far more then enough. Could it of had more ram, yes but so far I have not seen any hiccups due to that. One thing I would love to see added in the next release would be a curved display. Just like the Galaxy phones but only on the hinge side. This would greatly reduce the visual gap between screens. Hats off to Microsoft and I look forward to future iterations.
Wait till the flexible screen...if samsung puts an emr stylus in the fold 3 im sold...but i used to love my surface pro 4 and was super excited for the duo. Its cool. I have no issue with the hinge. I like the lenovo fold alot but $2500 for something thats not a tablet or a laptop replacement is a lot. Its cool but time will tell if this is gimmick or the next evolution of portable pc technology
I pre-ordered mine, got it on Thursday! WOW! I haven't been this excited since the OG iPhone where I camped out overnight at CINGULAR wireless to get the 4 and 8 gb iPhone. Still have the 4 gb. I'm an Apple fanboy, but this is as exciting or more than that! AND I love this device, even waiting for developers to engage and I have adapted to it and its productivity is demonstrating itself everyday! I see the vision, passion and future! The FLOW is amazing! This was so impactful, that I loaded my first UA-cam video on this "Revolutionary Device" as SJ described the OG iPhone, this is the bomb! Panos THANK YOU and thank you both for having this discussion 3 days after launch. I think it will help the community!
The Duo is an amazing device. I feel like every phone out there is just slab of glass and the only thing that they can use as innovation is a spec race. Software for the most part in the mobile platforms is not taking advantage of of the latest and greatest Apple or snapdragon chips expandable memory is not the future, cloud service and portable hard drive are, wireless charging isn't really wireless, there is always a cable. The Duo can video on 4k, edit and render that video faster than iPhone 11 pro. It all comes down to software. The only pain point on the Duo is the camera, it's very much trash by today's standards
There are a lot more pain points than just the camera. I’ve been using it the past 2 days and it is painfully buggy and slow. It’s a fun device to use, but I can’t see myself being more productive with this. Maybe after some software updates, but as it is now everything I want to do takes longer than if I were just using a tablet or a phone.
@@calebmills1014 I can assure you that my experience with the Duo's software has been great. As I type this I am checking my email where your reply showed up. I clicked reply on the right screen, and it open on the left, and where I type this. I never had to get out off one app to use the other. Just super smooth!
@@calebmills1014 I think a big issue is that users need to learn how to use this device. Maybe a lot of users are having problems with the Duo because they don't realize the problem is them - they haven't adapted to the device yet. This device is complex so it is demanding of the user to be creative and think outside the bun.
This thing is beyond basic understanding. I have been able to install dockers and Kali Linux. Great for game emulation. I have had it for 2 days and if it wasn't for sprint and t-mobile this would be my main phone (they can't get it to register on their network). From a very techy perspective, I am in love with this.
@@MrRinkdog i am a sprint customer that is switching. I couldn't get sprint to allow it on their network. I couldn't get tmobile to move my account from sprint with out having 2 social security numbers. It's been s compete nightmare. So glad wifi exsists
@@guyver2006so they needed two social security numbers from people on the account not just the main person? At this point it's becoming clear that Sprint customers are second class citizens and will be slowly forced to T-Mobile.
@@guyver2006 yeah I would have to agree. I have been on with their cs departments 4 times trying to get a straight answer. Never thought it wouldn't be this hard to spend $1500.
What a missed opportunity. He had the opportunity to really talk about how to use this phone and he got trapped talking about camera, camera bump, hinge and android? Wow these are all softball questions. I honestly don’t think they have a finished product. Their main audience is IT professionals who would use this device to increase productivity and he ended up playing the consumer device game. What a shame. No questions at all about windows integration. This is the number one selling point for their customer base and he completely missed the opportunity to make that shine. Instead he got stuck talking about hardware decisions that has already been made and not about key productivity features that will assist in selling their bread and butter product: cloud services. Doe he even work for Microsoft? 🤣
Lots of Duo can beat iPad talk. You guys must've missed Apple's latest patent that is a connector to put 2 iPads together in a clamshell, while sharing resources! I pitched this while at MS 15 years ago and Apple will beat them to the future again! Damn corporate politics!
Absolutely love the idea behind this device, I’ve been an iPhone user for almost 10 years but I would switch in a heartbeat if the price drops some and the large bezels shrink.
I don't think anyone is wanting just a premium camera this device obviously isn't for those types of people that love to take photos, but a decent camera would have been nice and it doesn't have to stick out. I'm not sure why that's even an issue. It's 2020 you don't have to have a huge camera bump to make the camera phenomenal. If the camera quality and ease-of-use was a part of this phone and the bezels were a bit thinner, I would have definitely bought it. But $1,400 is a bit much for this without all the specs
Panos Panay’s passion for his work, his team, and his family is amazing. I love how he can convey the duo in a genuine way to real life, and all of the things his “baby” can do. This interview makes me want one. Good job Lew.
I love that there are other smartphone haters in a leading positions. The Duo is actually the first foldable I can actually see that sentiment in. I hope they will stay at the front of the SW and HW development of foldables and stay true what they are supposed to be --post smartphone. Something akin to Apple's idea of iPadOS, but actually always in your pocket and is your main portable device.
You want two screens with the folding phones...simply divide the bigger folding screen with software into 2 windows.... surface duo compromises: cameras, wireless charging, speakers, software "buggies", battery life, to name a few.... I purchased my surface duo @ $699.. i'm happy with my purchase, it's a cool phone. I've actually taken the sim out of my note 10+ and am using the duo as primary device (even tho i still carry both phones because i feel better carrying the samsung with me just in case =X the duo screws up like not being able to open a microsoft product named onenote how embarrasing?) best part of the duo for me are the screens.. it's basically like a mini gadget laptop for 699 that can be used like a phone.. a lot of things do work as intended on the duo and that is why it is a really good buy at 699. buying the duo at full retail price would have been unacceptable and returned to sender or store. the main thing i don't like about my surface duo is that it wont open my onenote ( also a microsoft product! ) file that i use the most. my many other smaller sized onenote documents all seem to open ok on my duo. my desktop, laptop, apple ipadpro, apple ipad, samsung galaxy tab 7, samsung galaxy tab A (their cheapest tablet with s-pen only about $200) and my galaxy note 10+ ALL are capable of opening the microsoft onenote app file document that my microsoft duo is incapable of opening! my samsung galaxy note 10+ has no minor nor major issues nor compromises for what it is ***looks at microsoft duo*** with all of it's compromises and issues...i guess having 2 bigger screens is important too. why should i have to carry a samsung or apple product to be able to open my microsoft onenote document while carrying my microsoft surface duo? My hope is that i wont have to carry two phones or devices for future generations of the duo, that i could rely solely on my duo. that would be awesome! microsoft your on the right track, but your not there yet. anddddd another thing.... i have my 4 65" screen desktop display set up to not truncate or lose image data.. in other words the end of one screen is continued onto the next screen.. this is unlike the stock surface duo set up with has image data loss by hiding the image data under the hinge instead of continuing the image data onto the next screen. this becomes more important on static images which cross all screens where sliding/scrolling the image is not possible. "you are stuck not being able to see what is behind the hinge".. is there a setting to adjust the multiscreen setup on the surface duo to not truncate the image data under the hinge and to instead continue the image data onto the next screen?
I love the passion this guy has for this product, I hope Microsoft lets him keep going with it each year to continually improve it. It’s pretty great but more improvement will make it amazing
I think there are a lot of people like me where we say - that's cool, but I'll wait for V2.. then - maybe I'll get one once the software matures in 2-4 months and I see more reviews... then - I WANT THIS THING NOW!
I feel like it’s not a phone or a tablet but more of a mobile media & work device. Would be good to have a number that could link to both devices incase you needed to call someone if you were in the middle of a task so you didn’t need to get your phone out. I would get one if it was full screen(with out the bars) and if it were more affordable
Main observation: Surface Duo is a great early adopter's second device. Side observation: Surface Headphone mics are nowhere near studio mic quality :)
A missed opportunity. This interview really could have been much more critical about the inferior spec's, especially regarding the laggy software from world's "no 1" software company delivering a developer's kit at a premium price...
Not to be repetitive but I just laid it out for some else: For the mobile geeks, this phone for the price [$1500.00] is trash; no wireless charging, no 5g capabilities, no NFC, mediocre 11mp single camera (which you HAVE to open the phone to use), no expandable memory, 3577 mAh battery, no headphone jack, Snapdragon 855 (kinda last year-ish)....FOR 15 HUNDRED DOLLARS....and Lew touched on non of these issues cuz he's got his tongue stuck in this guy's rectum.
Every reviewer is objective until he interviews the product maker, they turn into puppies. Ask the real questions, why rush the product to market when the software isn’t ready, interrupt him we he says the camera is great, etc. But this, this is mostly marketing for both, Duo and Lew.
He not doing a sting operation. He is just talking about a product which is a 1st generation of a product, which may be in everyone's products in few years. It's not like they're shoving devices into your throats, everything's out there, they are not hiding anything. If you don't want it, just don't buy it. iPhone 1 and first iPad were also incomplete when they released, they didn't have good cameras, didn't had apps, were expensive. Same with the MS Surface products, didn't had power. Now they make best 2 in 1 and everyone prefers them. If someone won't bring product into the market, there won't be any innovation.
What are you talking about? That's how things are built now they should be in the consumers hand as soon as possible. Ask the real questions. It's another box yo.
Logical Error In Your Life fair enough, I just don’t want this to flop and get canceled just because the reception wasn’t good enough like what happened to other Microsoft devices. Also the video is kinda boring this way being real with panos would result in a more interesting conversation I think. It’s not lew only, Marques’s first interview with Craig Federighi was so boring for a similar reason.
Thank you for the interview! I have so much respect to everyone who bought the Surface Duo despite compromises it has to make (such as camera, the stability of software). You are like the 30,000 phase 3 covid vaccine trial participants. You are like the janitor in NASA "Helping to put a human on the moon". In order to make an innovation scale, it needs iterations. Iteration needs real user data. Also, about the Microsoft - Google collaboration. It is inspiring that they achieved this common ground. Panos, "I didn't make many friends when we started talking to Google. People didn't say 'Oh this totally makes sense' " lol.. This is one of the things that make me feel hopeful in 2020, a year that has seen too much division and blaming. Our world needs more unity, collaboration, and conviction to innovation.
Its clear, he is struggling to convince what the product can really bring to the table beyond the productivity argument. At 1400$ i dont see the value proposition enough to replace conventional phones atleast at this stage in time. But as a person - love the energy and passion Panos !
Panos is bleeding passion for the Surface Duo. I just hope MS sticks with it and just keeps improving it like they did with the initial surface line. With a team that believes in what they are doing like that, I expect great things for Surface Duo 2 and beyond.

Software improves with time and practice. Just wait till then
This was so wholesome. I really enjoyed to understand the thought around the project and product and how they see their own product. Pretty cool!

Jay Thompson all I have heard is the software for the LG is more buggy and it doesn’t utilize the two screen as well as the duo
Just purchased while watching, for the very reasons you mentioned.

That surface headphones mic quality is really bothering me
They expect that you will mostly use a True Wireless Headset.
It's mostly the room though.
@@ZZ-vl5nd exactly this room is not optimize for that. You can hear the loud Echo
Finally! I totally agree with his idea about cameras and smartphones.

Love the device, btw
Well I'm sure they know that but this phone will be pushed mostly for business people so I don't think they need a fancy triple lens camera, just one that take decent pictures.
Panos be like: Understandable...Have a great day...
@Chris Jordan I was just commenting on Lew's attitude 🙃
Actually I thought that the camera was trash. But now we've got some direct comparison between Duo and other flagship cameras... to be honest, it's pretty acceptable during daylight. I mean very acceptable!
Appreciated his thoughts on the disconnect from our mobile devices
@rrobertt13 Angry much or just a apple baby boy

Lala just as in art though, it’s pretty cool to be at the conceptual threshold where you have to stop and ask those types of questions.
I’m so buying this. Not as my iPhone replacement but as my iPad replacement. Hopefully autodesk make their apps better ln this device.
No lie, I love the concept of this device! There’s something about it that gives off a more futuristic vibe than even the Fold 2 (in MY opinion). I’m excited to see where this concept will end up in the future! Great interview!

@@MrMarlonDR Yeah seemed like it. If that was the case, there should have been a notice that its a paid review somewhere there.
This man makes everything sounds like poetry
Let's all be honest, we don't use our smart phones for calls these days. Like even then we all use Bluetooth headsets or earphones. The surface duo can fit into the smartphone genre.
Duo 4 years old project , I believe they trying to make super cool android with Microsoft apps kind a small laptop. 2021 no more smart phone, they become a pc & laptops . A14x best example for how apple wants to create mobile platforms for laptops. I think your from developed countries. Pandmic helps them to transform something into something. I think you're belongings some particular segment in the phone market. Nokia still alive.
Someone who thinks realistically. Finally
Anything for defending. Suface duo was impractical from the start. Should just join the display like fold.
Priscilla Feliciano I agree, but we do use our smart phones with one hand a lot, you cannot do that with the Duo.
I wonder how well the dual screen works with MS Teams, if that might give you a extra advantage (content and participants side by side)
There are lots of videos online of this exact scenario
Excellent interview! Thanks to you both for setting it up :)

@@GRID78_8 hi latte
Where is the evidence that it can render video faster than the iPhone?
@@calebmills1014 I think a big issue is that users need to learn how to use this device. Maybe a lot of users are having problems with the Duo because they don't realize the problem is them - they haven't adapted to the device yet. This device is complex so it is demanding of the user to be creative and think outside the bun.
MisterFuturtastic , right the screen freezing and apps crashing and the phone locking by itself is the users fault. Sure....
This thing is beyond basic understanding. I have been able to install dockers and Kali Linux. Great for game emulation. I have had it for 2 days and if it wasn't for sprint and t-mobile this would be my main phone (they can't get it to register on their network). From a very techy perspective, I am in love with this.
So you are a sprint customer trying to use with a t-mobile sim?
@@MrRinkdog i am a sprint customer that is switching. I couldn't get sprint to allow it on their network. I couldn't get tmobile to move my account from sprint with out having 2 social security numbers. It's been s compete nightmare. So glad wifi exsists

The Steve Jobs of Microsoft. Full of passion. Software still needs a bit of work to make it slick as the Galaxy Fold Z2.

Panos Panay, the GOAT
Lots of Duo can beat iPad talk. You guys must've missed Apple's latest patent that is a connector to put 2 iPads together in a clamshell, while sharing resources! I pitched this while at MS 15 years ago and Apple will beat them to the future again! Damn corporate politics!
These people are really passionate about this.. hope best for this product..
Absolutely love the idea behind this device, I’ve been an iPhone user for almost 10 years but I would switch in a heartbeat if the price drops some and the large bezels shrink.
True love : Panay and Surface

The price is ridiculous for a bezel beast with unpolished software optimization and an outdated processor.
Love this Surface Duo, and that headphone too! Hope the price will go down...
Just wait for few weeks when they've realized that sales are tanking.
@@MrMarlonDR Why would sales be tanking?
I love that there are other smartphone haters in a leading positions. The Duo is actually the first foldable I can actually see that sentiment in. I hope they will stay at the front of the SW and HW development of foldables and stay true what they are supposed to be --post smartphone. Something akin to Apple's idea of iPadOS, but actually always in your pocket and is your main portable device.
Great interview. Thank you both for taking the time to talk through this device.
Panos Panay is the lead of the surface division, the surface division that began with the ye old surface rt, he's not going anywhere anytime soon.
I think there are a lot of people like me where we say - that's cool, but I'll wait for V2.. then - maybe I'll get one once the software matures in 2-4 months and I see more reviews... then - I WANT THIS THING NOW!
No wonder why he hearted my comment.
Imagine he actually hearing you
Wish Panos used a professional mic like Lew, because those Microsoft Surface Headphones’ mic is kinda shitty (like almost every built in mic is)
I thought Lew was gonna grill him about the software. He took it easy on him. Gotta keep the exclusives coming. I respect the game.
yes but he still pressed him on "but this is your phone" question
I feel like it’s not a phone or a tablet but more of a mobile media & work device. Would be good to have a number that could link to both devices incase you needed to call someone if you were in the middle of a task so you didn’t need to get your phone out. I would get one if it was full screen(with out the bars) and if it were more affordable
Main observation: Surface Duo is a great early adopter's second device.
Side observation: Surface Headphone mics are nowhere near studio mic quality :)
I adore the Fold but the Duo is a beautiful device, damn!!! I don't care about the negative reviews. Duo 2 will change the game for sure👍👍👍👍
A missed opportunity. This interview really could have been much more critical about the inferior spec's, especially regarding the laggy software from world's "no 1" software company delivering a developer's kit at a premium price...
Not to be repetitive but I just laid it out for some else:
For the mobile geeks, this phone for the price [$1500.00] is trash; no wireless charging, no 5g capabilities, no NFC, mediocre 11mp single camera (which you HAVE to open the phone to use), no expandable memory, 3577 mAh battery, no headphone jack, Snapdragon 855 (kinda last year-ish)....FOR 15 HUNDRED DOLLARS....and Lew touched on non of these issues cuz he's got his tongue stuck in this guy's rectum.
Remember it's a paid interview from MSFT.
Man, I want this Windows Surface device now...
