This is the biggest, most tragic disaster in the history of the 'Antiverse', my Ant Room - a mass #AntApocalypse! Millions of my pet Yellow Crazy Ants, a supercolony known as the Golden Empire, has been struck with a mysterious plague that appeared out of nowhere, culling their numbers to a weakened few. In this video, we find out what exactly has been killing the ants, as well as, a possible hopeful solution through an #experiment using one of our cherished #RhinoBeetles, newcomers to the Antiverse. If the experiment does not work, or even if it does, I believe it would be the safest to relocate the mite-free queen(s) to a separate, smaller container so they can at least repopulate themselves to later make their return to the main terrarium. Bringing as many mite-free workers as possible with the queens, along with eggs and brood, would be great for the evacuated queens of course.
I was surprised he didn't grab the mite gree Queens for quarantine.

exactly what I was thinking and if you had noticed they had already been isolating there queens from the rest of the coloney by sealing off the chambers
if you did the same experiment with an infected queen it may work better because you'd be saving the reproductive part of the colony rather then a few workers

I have an alternate suggestion to at least secure the continued excistance of the Golden Empire.
If i were you, i would collect one (mite-free) queen of the 8, and put it in quarantine. That way part of the Empire will be left even if the experiment fails and every other ant perishes.

I’m really hoping Mikey already did this. It was almost like foreshadowing in this video. I can’t see him NOT doing it tbh. It was the first thought I had. Collect all the queens (even if it’s only 1.) that is mite-free, and pretty much restart the colony, and then after several months, maybe introduce another couple queens/workers and try to grow them back into a super colony again. This is my favorite ant colony on the channel for sure.

I cant Believe i got a Bit teary eyed when the workers came to aid their Queen and the speech about never giving Up and being conquerers started. This whole golden Empire Thing is so ridiculously Epic. It's silly and awesome at the Same time.

There might be another way of saving the Golden empire. He had a queen and a few workers who were clean of mites. I would recommend that you try to agitate the ground again and try to get queens and workers who are free of mites and isolating them away from the majority of the hive. If you have remove them and put them into an AC set up, the golden empire might survive. There might be no way of saving all the ants but if you remove some of the ants and check them for mites, you might be able to save the golden empire.

this was exactly what i was going to say. can ants come back from just a few workers and queen? i cant see a reason why they cant.
I felt some tears fill up in my eyes while watching this, and I was so confused. But then I realized, the Golden Empire brought be to this channel, and they made me go from squishing ants, to giving them food if they went in my house, to wanting to keep them.
If they die, or if they live, ill still watch yourchannel, and when I have more money, I'll buy some of your setups and get some ants.

I never saw ants this way that i'm seeing now after discovering your channel, i even wanted to start creating a ant farm, i never imagined that one day i would keep watching a video about ants more than 30min without blinking!!! I don’t keep Ants, but I keep bees. This autumn I came upon a bee keepers worst nightmare, so I know how you’re feeling.
I opened my boxes to one of my hives completely gone. Over the course of a week and half, they had split, swarmed, and the remainder of the colony had been pushed out by wax moths. It had happened so soon, and I knew something was wrong when I opened the lid and saw no bees. And then another. Until I saw none. The area was scattered with more dead bees than normal, and bottom board was over run with wax moth larvae, the bottom board full of webbing.
I broke down into tears, suit and smoker in hand, hot and sweaty from the sun and panic. My heart shattered and I felt so bad and I still feel so bad. My box is visible from my window and it’s still there and it makes me tear up sometimes. I can’t help but think of all the things I did wrong. I can only hope they found a place and survived the winter and will thrive in whatever new home they made for themselves. There wasn’t enough bodies to say the entire colony died, so they left.
Here’s hoping they’re living their best little bee lives. ❤️

Mikey, do you think it would be a good precautionary action to capture one of the mite-free queens and some of her workers, and keep them quarantined in a test tube or in a small terrarium with sterilised soil, so that if the hypoaspis mites don't help and the rest of the colony dies out, we can at least have a few survivors to regrow the Empire?

As other commenters have suggested, *PLEASE* take as many Mite-free queens as you can get, and put them in a test-tube for the time being... also include any mite-free workers so they have at least a “head start” on rebuilding. This could at least be a “fail safe” if this mite experiment fails...

Just started watching your channel and I like how you give the ants character, you treat them as kingdoms instead as just some mindless drones you have to take care of. He just wouldn't have to wait for the queens to lay their first eggs, he could capture them with some mite free workers and they would just do what any wild ant colony would do and continue to populate in the test tubes.

If the process stresses the queens it may stop them from laying eggs and the colony would die anyways

The only thing I don't like about this channel is how he uses tension along with the ad placements to make it seem like a TV show. It ends up feeling very clickbaity when it takes forever to get to the point. Of course this is only a problem because I've been following the channel long enough that the recaps are redundant. lol.

I’m not much of a ant keeper but your videos make me appreciate ants and now I start bringing food to the and colonies that are at my school, I was so sad when I heard about the Golden Empire but I am so glad you found a answer! You chose Apollo because he is named after a Greek god over medicine, plague, and healing.
