    Learn more about the music:
Wasifuddin Dagar is a modern dhrupadi vocal master, blending patient phrases with fine rhythmic control and an effortless vocal elasticity. His musical lineage stretches back far into the past - some trace it back to Swami Haridas Dagar, the 16th century teacher of Tansen himself. He trained extensively to assimilate the grammar of his family’s dagarvani dhrupad style, receiving instruction from various relatives. His first public performance came just 12 days after his father Faiyazuddin's death, singing a duet with his uncle Zahiruddin Dagar. Today he tours as a solo artist, singing to dhrupad’s rapidly-expanding global audience. Listen to more of Wasifuddin here:

“A few times I had an experience of zero gravity...during my concert. I thought, "What is happening here, what is this?" (Wasifuddin Dagar)
Darbari is described by musicologist Deepak Raja as “the emperor of ragas, and the raga of emperors”. The word ‘darbar’ refers to to the royal courts of past ages, and it is easy to imagine Darbari’s majestic tones echoing across marble floors, bringing solemn relief to kings, diplomats, and warlords. The mood is grave, reverential, and often slow, blending lyrical passages with a precise microtonal geometry. The optional ‘Kanada’ suffix denotes the raga’s likely origins in Carnatic music - some consider it to have been imported North by Mian Tansen in the 16th century.
It uses Asavari thaat [SRgmPdnS], with Re and Pa as the vadi and samvadi [king and queen notes]. Characteristic phrase resolutions include gmR and dnP, and the raga is often elaborated in mandra saptak [low octave]. Musicians often pause on Ga and Dha, ornamenting them with andolit [heavy oscillations]. It resembles the modern Carnatic Raga Natabhairavi, and the Western natural minor scale. We'd like to upload everything for free - but filming, editing, and hosting cost money, and we’re a small not-for-profit organisation. Signing up to the Darbar Player costs about the same as a couple of coffees a month ($5), which we hope is an excellent price for such a wealth of unique music.
