hey, first of all i really like your videos. My critique is that most of your titles are too vague to really tell something in particular and that translates to videos that don't round up a specific idea. Love your work, but i think you can improve on this.
I knew I wasn't the only one who thought there was more to Wallace's character than meets the eye. Something not mentioned in this video is how the set design in Wallace's headquarters emphasizes his lack of appreciation of small details. The interiors of his headquarters are these vast, barren, aquatic spaces, as opposed to what we see of Tyrell's place, which is filled to the brim with small things that Wallace wouldn't pay attention to. The fact that his "eyes" are these drones that seem to give him the grand totality of an image, rather than allow him to see bits and pieces that add up to a sum. And this is all conveyed in just two scenes.
Brian Collins - good point. Yet the entire new movie has a more "barren" look. It can also be seen as uncluttered, when compared to the original, which has a ton of small details (some locations look like some sort of abandoned places with bits and pieces of junk "collected") whereas the new movie has a more streamlined and clean look, more of a barren post apocalyptic feel where almost everything was wiped clean. Also. No "neo-noir" cigarette smoke. Ultra clean lean spherical lenses and digital cameras used, walls and objects (inside the rich parts that is) don't look lived-in but brand new. Fashions and tastes play a huge role along with the actual meaning of an overall set design.
The barren walls also may help his heightened sense of hearing. Clutter would mute sounds. Many blind people can echo-locate items and walls simply by how the ambient sound changes as they move around.
One of the rare instances where the sequel somehow manages to outshine it's already excellent predecessor. One of my all time favourite movies, shame the majority of audiences didn't have the patience to sit through it.
For me it's a case of without the original, this one not only doesn't exist but couldn't be anywhere near as good, I just wanted more of the same and that's exactly what I got (with even a bit more).
Glad you did this video. Blade runner 2049 is the best 2017 movie for me and one of the best movies of all time. I really think this movie is going to be called Sci-Fi classic.
Bladerunner 2049. That is all. It had no business being overlooked or underrated. But sadly, it is. One of greatest movies of the past decade. Those who say it’s boring are the ones who don’t see the subtle brilliance Denis Villeneuve expresses throughout his masterpiece.
Ben Wyatt well stated. This was the only 2017 film I saw twice, and gained tremendously from the second viewing. With time, more will see it’s brilliance, and those who already were inclined to applaud its merits will come to further appreciate it greatness through subsequent views.
Domonic Decoco I've heard people say that it's not as good on subsequent viewings, but I disagree. I feel that it gets better each time I watch it. My only regret is not seeing it in the theater.
I'm probably gonna be crucified for this but, I'd not say that its boring, rather that it is a slow film, and not for everyone. I loved it, its beatifully shot, written and acted, but I think it could do with a little bit more of action or a slightly faster pacing. The action sequences could be a bit longer and I don't think it would detract from the excellency of the film, rather enhancing it and also avoiding that the "normal" moviegoer dissmissed it as a "boring artsy film". It would help connect both audiences IMO And well, they're replicants with superhuman strenght in a sci-fi setting. It doesnt get more justified than that, lol
I think the scene with the giant purple Joi can be read in a couple of ways, and I think it's the most important scene in the movie. You can interpret it as you say in the video- Joe realizes his previous life was pre-programmed, down to his most intimate relationship. It was all a sham. It's his lowest moment but it also pushes him to become truly human. However you can also read it as his own personal miracle (I think Sapper's line even plays in VO after the scene). You can interpret it as Joe realizing that even though JOI was a program, she still meant something to him. Much like the dream with the toy horse, even if she's not real, she still changed him- this would tie into your point at the start of the video about our experiences shaping us. Also Joe believes he has no soul, yet JOI travels with him as a ghostly spirit. What's really the difference between a hologram like JOI and a Replicant? It's ambiguous based on the film. There are certainly things to suggest that JOI is a unique individual- she shows curiosity in the hotel for example. The third interpretation of the scene is that JOI became an individual just like Joe did- and that's the miracle Joe witnesses that changes him. Blade Runner (The Final Cut) is my favourite movie of all time, so while I really enjoyed this one it obviously didn't quite reach the heights of the original for me. I feel the script isn't as tight and it's not as thematically strong. However it's still an incredible movie and they really nailed the atmosphere.
I left a similar comment just moments ago. There is a great little video by Nerdwriter on the beautiful animated city in the original Ghost in The Shell. There is a passage in the film where we just get images of the city doing it's thing....a bus turning a street corner, the reflection of a plane passing overhead in the windows of a tall modern building, shoppers slowly passing a department store window ....it all makes the city believable because you see it existing 'outside the plot'. Action may be happening in the frame, but you get the sense the city is alive and real outside the frame too. Scott sort of does this in the original, but he uses it very sparingly, Deckard having his drink on the balcony and watching the city is a great example. He shows just enough and your imagination does the rest. Villeneuve didn't nail that for me. Yes, it was a fully realized world, but I simply didn't find it as fascinating as Ridley's original vision.
I've seen that video, it's excellent. Nerdwriter has a really good one on the original Blade Runner as well. I think Villeneuve had a tough task, he had to do something new with the setting while also keeping true to the original vision. He does an admirable job but his future is much more barren. The setting feels more like a metaphor to go along with the story, rather than a real place. The original had a strange beauty to it as well, it was all very alien but there was always this bustle of activity. Villeneuve in general is a weird director for me. I feel like most of his movies don't really click perfectly together. Enemy is the only one, and Sicario was almost there, but the others seem to lack something that would make them true masterpieces. Yet I can't deny he's one of the best directors working today. I think my problem with him is that he's very into metaphor and symbolism, but he only rarely goes full on into dream logic. Most of his movies feel like they are halfway between reality and a sort of symbolic place. Prisoners especially felt this way. I'm sure it's just preference on my part but that's how I feel.

I like the focus on that scene. I've seen a number of comments about how it is just where K realizes that Joi was just programmed that way - but I've never bought into that. He lives in a world with these ads all over the place and I find it hard to believe that this was the first time he encountered this one. Maybe the ad was more profound to him this time than in the past, after what he's been through...? Perhaps - or perhaps not. I've wondered instead whether Joi grew beyond her programming to become something more. Despite being a hologram presumably backed by some kind of AI, she eventually sacrificed herself for him... 'the most human thing she could do'... and she said she loved him. As was said, signs that she had gone beyond code to become unique/individual...? Maybe this scene was not his realization of what she was NOT, as much as it was a realization of what she WAS to him - and what he himself could also be, which motivated him to go save Deckard. If the line between programmed and 'real' is getting this hard to identify, at what point does it stop mattering...? I don't think the movie answers that question, but I think it asks it...
I really liked it too. I would also recommend watching my own personal favorite for this year, Raw. It's on netflix, sadly its french so unless you speak it youll have to do with the subtitles
Potentially my favorite movie of all time, it has everything I look for in a movie and it executes nearly every one of those things brilliantly. Your video was excellent. If someone were to tell me they didn't understand 2049 very well, I would point them in the direction of this essay.
I'm sure it will be nominated for (and probably win) a ton of technical awards-but it definitely deserves picture, writing, direction (at the very least)
I disagree with you about Joi. To me, her human status is rendered ambiguous when she tells Joe to destroy the version of herself at Joe's home, putting herself at risk, so when she is killed, she sacrificed her self for Joe. If sacrificing ourselves for the right cause is the most human thing we can do, then maybe she was human after all. Maybe her sacrifice inspired Joe to commit to his own. Maybe that's why it plays that clip of Sapper talking about miracles. Maybe Joe/K saw in Joi a miracle?
I like your comments and made similar ones in response to another post in this thread. I think the movie certainly invites the idea that replicants can be more than just programmed machines - and then it invites us even further to consider whether an entity like Joi could be more, too.
5:56 Though she didn't. Her eyes were clearly brown in the first film, so the new Rachel is a perfect clone of old. When I watched the movie I thought that Deckard is messing with Wallace, clearly showing him that manipulation didn't work and to wound his confidence a little. Later I found that it also can be a reference to a song "Her eyes were green" about tragic love of a cowboy. It also can be reference to the fact that green eyes in Voight-Kampff scene of the first movie was some filming mistake. I am sure that Villeneuve is enough BR-geek for that, he called this movie his first inspiration to become a film director. Thank you for essay, I love it!

Just like many things in the movie, it can be interpreted different ways. It could be a simple stock footage shortage, Deckard denying her with that line because 'he knows what is real', or Deckard taking Wallace down a peg saying even with her dna he can't make her as she was.
This is a movie I'm going to need a lot more viewings to get an understanding of. I've only been able to see it twice and both viewings led to very different experiences for me, allowing me to view the film's themes and messages from different angles. It's truly an amazing and fascinating film that I also hold as possibly my favorite of 2017. Don't know if you've gotten around to it, but The Shape of Water is definitely another of the year's greatest if you ask me. Another film with many intricacies that makes it a very substantive watch. Nonetheless, another great video, man! Keep it up!

Also did anyone check out that Blade Runner short, Blade Runner 2022? It ties in between the Blade Runner and 2049. It also explains certain events. The short is directed by the same guy who did Cowboy Bepop and Samurai Champloo.
Good video but you missed a few things: Joi goes against her programming by the Wallace corp and what Joe wants to hear in the scene before they go to Vegas. She desperately wants to become more autonomous and human ("just like a real girl"), but as she says "I can't do it myself". So actually you could argue she eventually develops a soul, just not to the same degree as the replicants do. I'm pretty sure Joe knew that Joi was not unique as you see adverts for her earlier in the film, but it takes his journey and her loss for him to realise how she was simply filling a gap in his life. Before I get the impression he didn't have much to live for, but in that scene he knows he has a real cause and a purpose to live (and die) for. Luv I agree with your points but I think people miss an obvious thing, she gets infuriated with Joshi just as much because she has killed a baby replicant (a miracle). She also appears to be crying in the scene where Wallace kills the new female replicant. While she is ultimately a slave to Wallace and to being "the best there is" I think she also has an incredibly strong love and respect for replicants as a species (and not so much for humans except her master). It would interesting to see what she would think about the replicant revolution (I'm sure she would eventually side with her master but would sympathise with them). As for Wallace I agree about his god like complex and obsession with the big picture, Tyrell comes across as more understanding of human nature. But Rachel doesn't have green eyes in the original, except one scene where she is getting light flashed in her eyes during the voight-kampff test. They are clearly brown throughout the rest of the movie. Now this line is fascinating because of the various reasons Deckard may say it. - He doesn't want to give Wallace praise which he craves in his godlike act of creation and knows it will infuriate him by saying "yeah your not as good as you think". - He also says before "I know what's real" and while the new rachel looks so similar, he knows deep down that rachel died long ago and it isn't really her. By accepting the new her he would be agreeing to work with Wallace to give up his daughter. He knows Wallace is preying on his weakness to get to his child, hence why he has to turn away from her. - Another thing to consider, remember what his daughter says to Joe earlier in the film "people think memory is all about the details, it's not...we call with our feelings....anything real should feel amiss" Perhaps Rachel looks identical but he feels that its not right or perhaps his own memory fails him and he believes her eyes were green because it wasn't the details that actually mattered. This may rely on whether Deckard is a replicant or not.....which is ambiguous in 2049.
One of the best films ever made, everything was masterful- the direction, the cinematography, the music, the deep themes, the metaphors, script, EVERYTHING. If this film isnt nominated for several categories at the academy awards and doesnt win at least one, I'm going to riot.
anyone out there agree with me that Jared Leto completely NAILS that role of Wallace? There is something that is resonating in me (I saw this movie two times) about his character. I think it's the line when he states "we could storm eden and re-take her" to me that line is so audacious and over-the top but in the most incredible way. The religious implications are obvious but I think it also touches upon mankind's desire to "correct" the original "fall from grace"? As if in "re-taking" eden we could begin again as humans in a more perfect way. This movie is phenomenal!!! I will go on a limb saying it is better than the original... and I have seen the original probably 50 times now. And this video by Jack's Movie Reviews is easily the best review/explanation of BR 2049 on the internet.
I 100% agree with you, leto's character was immensely fascinating and this video did a great job digging into some of the parts of his personality (big picture vs detail) that sets him apart from Tyrel and drives him forward.

I wanna watch this movie again so badly. The first one was already complex but 2049 is , imo, one level above that. You Seem to have made up your mind about it , whereas to this day im not sure about joi and Jois and goslings relationship. Does it really not matter to him? And is she really just doing what shes Programmed to do? I found myself thinking that Theres more to it, sadly i cant watch it again in the near future. If 2049 goes one step further, imagine that not only (humans and) replicants are searching for identity and what it means to be human, but Joe now has to judge someone else whos not human on this Basis. I feel like the Film is very ambiguous in that sense, but maybe my memory is playing Tricks on me. Appreciate the Video
Jack's Movie Reviews ye i kinda feel the same way. I think their relationship was a catalyst for a lot of things and made Joe understand and appreciate certain themes, but in the end those are the things he takes with him that make him humane, not the relationship itself. I love the scene with the big Hologramm, cant even imagine what was going through Joes head. But i feel like his thoughts go into that direction, he realises what he has to do and understands the relationship between rather&daughter. I love this Film and could probably talk about it for hours, also thanks to people like you, youre a big inspiration.
In her death scene, she was clearly afraid right before Luv stomped on the emanator, which suggests that she had a sense of mortality and wanted to live. This in turn suggests that she had consciousness and in the film's logic, a 'soul'.
Your analysis on films are simply on point. You separate yourself from other bland reviewers. Your channel, in my opinion, is very underated and at least deserves five hundred thousand subscribers. Keep up the great work!
I totally agree on the best sci-fi movie of the last few decades, as well as the part where it offers so much to discuss. This movie spans a myriad of UA-cam video analysis, practically all of them with a lot of insight. Blade Runner should win all Oscars, but then again, that show lost credibility ages ago.
If you want to focus on character names, Joi is probably linked to a type of pornography - Jerk-off Instruction. It's where the chick doesn't actually physically interact with anyone in the video and instead just talks directly to the viewer, encouraging them, pretty much what Joi does in the film. Totally just outed myself here... worth it, great movie.

Excellent analysis. 6:44 to 6:49 - probably the best line in the entire film. That is the delivery of a dogged actor, and a master of his trade. Harrison Ford didn't just come back for another take to half-ass it and score some easy money because he had to be part of the sequel. He's putting all of his weight behind the word "stranger", because he understands Villneuve's creation and means to do it justice.
I think 'sapper' in 'Sapper Morton' is the military designation here. I think this is also a reference to the events mentioned in Black Out 2022, where armies of replicants fought each other for resolving human conflicts. He probably fought in the wars mentioned in that short, and probably had experiences similar to the characters in it as well.
I bought it on iTunes and it has a TON of great extras. Also-I'm not sure if I would call it my favorite video of all time-but definitely my best of 2018!
Waayyy back, I watched Dark Star and then Blade Runner on a Late night TV Channel, in the UK, in the late '80s - both had a very profound effect on me, having just quit the Local Police Force when family issues were being swamped when the "exigencies of the Service" threatened to dwarf my humanity. Up to then I had treated Sci-Fi with some disdain, not realising that there was a human inside me that really wanted to know his own soul..... Blade Runner, and its various incarnations fascinated me through the rebuild of my humanity, my family, and myself, my soul. Now, years later, Blade Runner 2049 was a shock, a really extensive shock, and your interpretation has really helped me to balance my own perception of reality with what is actually going on all around. BR2049 can only really be appreciated after exposes like yours, and I truly thank you for your ideas.
Great video! Definitly Blade Runner 2049 is in my top list of 2017 movies. It is so beautiful in every way posible. The story and the main question about what make us humans is fascinating, and the visuals are something from another world. How Villeneuve play with the dicerent tones of colors, with the rain and the dust, so poetic. The fact that they have recreated visualy the character of Rachel like in 1982 is something incredible. And the score made by Hans Zimmer deserves an Oscar without a doubt, so powerful and deep. I know that it sounds like im exagerating but thats how i see this movie. Like pure art, so rich in storytelling, so beautiful and so fascinating. Anyways, thanks for the analysis man!

Blade Runner 2049 was a really good film, I enjoyed it even though I never watched the original Blade Runner. Its also actually one of the best film sequels, or a sequel done right.
greenblackout Because Blade Runner the 1982 original is already critically acclaimed and well regarded film by almost universally everyone. I am not saying that as a excuse as I wanted to or should have but didn't had the time as I was focusing other things. Not mention making a follow-up to a popular movie, it is not easy and can be a daunting task as you got to live up people's expectations and try to do stuff right or different. Because 90% of the time, the sequel ends up bombing.
This has gone down, as one of my all time, favorite movies and the moment K finds out that Joi was following her program to make home feel good, I almost cried. Very few movies have ever pushed me to that point but dammit man that shit hurt my heart. I felt that bad for guy.
The thing about Luv was that if Wallace wants someone who will simply do as he says and is designed to, why does he keep someone around who would clearly fail a baseline test? When Wallace kills the replicant from the plastic bag, Luv seems distraught and is crying and she cries again when Joshi tells her K killed the kid. Now you might think she was upset at failing but when she says something along the lines of "In the face of the fabulous new your only thought is to kill it" and the fact that again she is crying with watery eyes means she is invested in this cause and not merely doing as she is designed.
Great video as always Jack. Blade Runner 2049 is my favorite film of 2017 and is, in my opinion, Denis Villeneuve's best work yet. I'm hoping you'll eventually make a video on my second favorite film of 2017, Call Me by Your Name. I feel that move has a lot of topics to discuss as well.
The film, to me, seemed to be saying the ability to create is what makes someone human. Whether that is to create love, joy, hope, change, or actual life. This feeds into the main struggle of a replicant giving birth. K gets to overcome his programming of simply obeying to creating hope and happiness by getting Deckard to his daughter. The end of your video was perfect!
That's an interesting perspective on K's last act. But I think one can also argue that his decision to free Deckard stems from the fact the he realize that even programmed and artificial beings are capable of making meaningful sacrifices for the ones they love or appreciate. In this contex Joi's programmed love and care is something K really appreciate and wants to replicate in his last sacrificial act.

Great analysis, I'm glad I discovered your channel!. I was surprised about your take on Luv, because through all the movie I felt like she was "breaking" programming, maybe because she was so emotional when killing and fighting. Her desire to be the best felt so human and became the most interesting character for me. But yes, maybe that's what Wallace thinks that humanity is and so she was programmed like that.

Man 2049 was my favourite movie by far! Maybe even my favourite movie going experience ever! If you haven’t yet I’d also highly advise reading the source material (Do androids dream of electric sheep), there’s even a graphic novel version that has every word in it (verbatim). The original Bladerunner is great but 2049 does a much more effective job of exploring the themes of the novel (imo)
So many people missed most of the points pushed by the movie, at least in my social surrounding. Beside what is said in this video, it explore a lot of major upcoming concept, like boundaries between human & AI, what's consciousness, what is and are we alive, relation to time and existence... This movie was a near perfect piece of cinema.
I FINALLY saw this awesome movie today, at the cinema (important I think for this one) and was mesmerized, absorbed and felt totally satisfied as, as you say Jack, it is a most fitting sequel to one of the best sci-fi films ever made!! I felt everything you said, Jack, while watching it!!! I couldn't wait to come home and finally watch your analysis!! Wonderful!!!
I saw this movie in an imax, it was beautiful. Your review is great and agree with everything you said, it helped me understand some bits I previously didn't.
Great review....This is a film that will be studied in film schools and in English classrooms for decades imo. So deep and meaningful.... sucks that the blu Ray didn’t have a director commentary!

Awesome review - and together with the great editing and graphics makes this probably your best video yet (and that is saying something). Just sharing my own opinion, I'm totally fine with others: I think on a purely technical level the cinematography is ace, but on an artistic level it comes off as rather cold and lacks the gritty yet dreamy atmosphere that the 1982 original (any version) had. It's a matter of taste. No doubt this is a truly great movie. Love your insight, understanding and the ability to put it into words - as I always do. Thanks for sharing it!
mdi - as I stated: it's a matter of taste. The new movie definitely has a more contemporary look (as opposed to the classic 1980s anamorphic 35mm film look). Regarding music: I fully agree with you. As a musician myself, I agree with many of my colleagues: we live in a melody-less time regarding film music. It has become more of a sound design. The Vangelis score has melodic lines (and some simple but effective motifs which sound almost improvised and probably were) the new soundtrack has a similar "electronic" sound to it (with some added updates for a more contemporary sound) but is - conforming to modern tastes - devoid of melody - and even harmonic progression and counterpoint, but I won't bore anyone going into more detail - it has been laid out elsewhere.
Rachael eyes weren’t green. They were brown like Wallace created. When deckard said “her eyes were green” I think he’s basically saying no copy could match the real Rachael.
Rachel didn't have green eyes. She had brown just like the reproduction. And that was what Deckard realized. She was a reproduction not the original. The original was the skull sitting on the table in the same room. That's what Deckard realized. That and the necessity to protect Ana from Wallace to the point he was willing to be taken off world and tortured to keep her protected at all cost. As for Wallace, wasn't he evil? I thought he was. And as for whether K died in the end..... depends on whether the sequel gets written or not.

The interiors of his headquarters are these vast, barren, aquatic spaces, as opposed to what we see of Tyrell's place, which is filled to the brim with small things that Wallace wouldn't pay attention to. The fact that his "eyes" are these drones that seem to give him the grand totality of an image, rather than allow him to see bits and pieces that add up to a sum. And this is all conveyed in just two scenes.
Brian Collins - good point. Yet the entire new movie has a more "barren" look. It can also be seen as uncluttered, when compared to the original, which has a ton of small details (some locations look like some sort of abandoned places with bits and pieces of junk "collected") whereas the new movie has a more streamlined and clean look, more of a barren post apocalyptic feel where almost everything was wiped clean. Also. No "neo-noir" cigarette smoke. Ultra clean lean spherical lenses and digital cameras used, walls and objects (inside the rich parts that is) don't look lived-in but brand new. Fashions and tastes play a huge role along with the actual meaning of an overall set design.

The barren walls also may help his heightened sense of hearing. Clutter would mute sounds. Many blind people can echo-locate items and walls simply by how the ambient sound changes as they move around.

For me it's a case of without the original, this one not only doesn't exist but couldn't be anywhere near as good, I just wanted more of the same and that's exactly what I got (with even a bit more).

Domonic Decoco I've heard people say that it's not as good on subsequent viewings, but I disagree. I feel that it gets better each time I watch it. My only regret is not seeing it in the theater.
I'm probably gonna be crucified for this but, I'd not say that its boring, rather that it is a slow film, and not for everyone. I loved it, its beatifully shot, written and acted, but I think it could do with a little bit more of action or a slightly faster pacing. The action sequences could be a bit longer and I don't think it would detract from the excellency of the film, rather enhancing it and also avoiding that the "normal" moviegoer dissmissed it as a "boring artsy film". It would help connect both audiences IMO

I think the scene with the giant purple Joi can be read in a couple of ways, and I think it's the most important scene in the movie.
You can interpret it as you say in the video- Joe realizes his previous life was pre-programmed, down to his most intimate relationship. It was all a sham. It's his lowest moment but it also pushes him to become truly human.
However you can also read it as his own personal miracle (I think Sapper's line even plays in VO after the scene). You can interpret it as Joe realizing that even though JOI was a program, she still meant something to him. Much like the dream with the toy horse, even if she's not real, she still changed him- this would tie into your point at the start of the video about our experiences shaping us.
Also Joe believes he has no soul, yet JOI travels with him as a ghostly spirit. What's really the difference between a hologram like JOI and a Replicant? It's ambiguous based on the film. There are certainly things to suggest that JOI is a unique individual- she shows curiosity in the hotel for example. The third interpretation of the scene is that JOI became an individual just like Joe did- and that's the miracle Joe witnesses that changes him.
Blade Runner (The Final Cut) is my favourite movie of all time, so while I really enjoyed this one it obviously didn't quite reach the heights of the original for me. I feel the script isn't as tight and it's not as thematically strong. However it's still an incredible movie and they really nailed the atmosphere.
I left a similar comment just moments ago. There is a great little video by Nerdwriter on the beautiful animated city in the original Ghost in The Shell. There is a passage in the film where we just get images of the city doing it's thing....a bus turning a street corner, the reflection of a plane passing overhead in the windows of a tall modern building, shoppers slowly passing a department store window ....it all makes the city believable because you see it existing 'outside the plot'. Action may be happening in the frame, but you get the sense the city is alive and real outside the frame too. Scott sort of does this in the original, but he uses it very sparingly, Deckard having his drink on the balcony and watching the city is a great example. He shows just enough and your imagination does the rest. Villeneuve didn't nail that for me. Yes, it was a fully realized world, but I simply didn't find it as fascinating as Ridley's original vision.
I've seen that video, it's excellent. Nerdwriter has a really good one on the original Blade Runner as well.
I think Villeneuve had a tough task, he had to do something new with the setting while also keeping true to the original vision. He does an admirable job but his future is much more barren. The setting feels more like a metaphor to go along with the story, rather than a real place. The original had a strange beauty to it as well, it was all very alien but there was always this bustle of activity.
Villeneuve in general is a weird director for me. I feel like most of his movies don't really click perfectly together. Enemy is the only one, and Sicario was almost there, but the others seem to lack something that would make them true masterpieces. Yet I can't deny he's one of the best directors working today.
I think my problem with him is that he's very into metaphor and symbolism, but he only rarely goes full on into dream logic. Most of his movies feel like they are halfway between reality and a sort of symbolic place. Prisoners especially felt this way. I'm sure it's just preference on my part but that's how I feel.

Exactly the same way I feel about Villeneuve.
I like the focus on that scene. I've seen a number of comments about how it is just where K realizes that Joi was just programmed that way - but I've never bought into that. He lives in a world with these ads all over the place and I find it hard to believe that this was the first time he encountered this one. Maybe the ad was more profound to him this time than in the past, after what he's been through...? Perhaps - or perhaps not.
I've wondered instead whether Joi grew beyond her programming to become something more. Despite being a hologram presumably backed by some kind of AI, she eventually sacrificed herself for him... 'the most human thing she could do'... and she said she loved him. As was said, signs that she had gone beyond code to become unique/individual...? Maybe this scene was not his realization of what she was NOT, as much as it was a realization of what she WAS to him - and what he himself could also be, which motivated him to go save Deckard.
If the line between programmed and 'real' is getting this hard to identify, at what point does it stop mattering...? I don't think the movie answers that question, but I think it asks it...

I disagree with you about Joi. To me, her human status is rendered ambiguous when she tells Joe to destroy the version of herself at Joe's home, putting herself at risk, so when she is killed, she sacrificed her self for Joe. If sacrificing ourselves for the right cause is the most human thing we can do, then maybe she was human after all. Maybe her sacrifice inspired Joe to commit to his own. Maybe that's why it plays that clip of Sapper talking about miracles. Maybe Joe/K saw in Joi a miracle?
I like your comments and made similar ones in response to another post in this thread. I think the movie certainly invites the idea that replicants can be more than just programmed machines - and then it invites us even further to consider whether an entity like Joi could be more, too.

It also can be reference to the fact that green eyes in Voight-Kampff scene of the first movie was some filming mistake. I am sure that Villeneuve is enough BR-geek for that, he called this movie his first inspiration to become a film director.

Just like many things in the movie, it can be interpreted different ways. It could be a simple stock footage shortage, Deckard denying her with that line because 'he knows what is real', or Deckard taking Wallace down a peg saying even with her dna he can't make her as she was.
This is a movie I'm going to need a lot more viewings to get an understanding of. I've only been able to see it twice and both viewings led to very different experiences for me, allowing me to view the film's themes and messages from different angles. It's truly an amazing and fascinating film that I also hold as possibly my favorite of 2017.
Don't know if you've gotten around to it, but The Shape of Water is definitely another of the year's greatest if you ask me. Another film with many intricacies that makes it a very substantive watch.

Good video but you missed a few things:
Joi goes against her programming by the Wallace corp and what Joe wants to hear in the scene before they go to Vegas. She desperately wants to become more autonomous and human ("just like a real girl"), but as she says "I can't do it myself". So actually you could argue she eventually develops a soul, just not to the same degree as the replicants do. I'm pretty sure Joe knew that Joi was not unique as you see adverts for her earlier in the film, but it takes his journey and her loss for him to realise how she was simply filling a gap in his life. Before I get the impression he didn't have much to live for, but in that scene he knows he has a real cause and a purpose to live (and die) for.
Luv I agree with your points but I think people miss an obvious thing, she gets infuriated with Joshi just as much because she has killed a baby replicant (a miracle). She also appears to be crying in the scene where Wallace kills the new female replicant. While she is ultimately a slave to Wallace and to being "the best there is" I think she also has an incredibly strong love and respect for replicants as a species (and not so much for humans except her master). It would interesting to see what she would think about the replicant revolution (I'm sure she would eventually side with her master but would sympathise with them).
As for Wallace I agree about his god like complex and obsession with the big picture, Tyrell comes across as more understanding of human nature. But Rachel doesn't have green eyes in the original, except one scene where she is getting light flashed in her eyes during the voight-kampff test. They are clearly brown throughout the rest of the movie. Now this line is fascinating because of the various reasons Deckard may say it.
- He doesn't want to give Wallace praise which he craves in his godlike act of creation and knows it will infuriate him by saying "yeah your not as good as you think".
- He also says before "I know what's real" and while the new rachel looks so similar, he knows deep down that rachel died long ago and it isn't really her. By accepting the new her he would be agreeing to work with Wallace to give up his daughter. He knows Wallace is preying on his weakness to get to his child, hence why he has to turn away from her.
- Another thing to consider, remember what his daughter says to Joe earlier in the film "people think memory is all about the details, it's not...we call with our feelings....anything real should feel amiss" Perhaps Rachel looks identical but he feels that its not right or perhaps his own memory fails him and he believes her eyes were green because it wasn't the details that actually mattered. This may rely on whether Deckard is a replicant or not.....which is ambiguous in 2049.

anyone out there agree with me that Jared Leto completely NAILS that role of Wallace? There is something that is resonating in me (I saw this movie two times) about his character. I think it's the line when he states "we could storm eden and re-take her" to me that line is so audacious and over-the top but in the most incredible way. The religious implications are obvious but I think it also touches upon mankind's desire to "correct" the original "fall from grace"? As if in "re-taking" eden we could begin again as humans in a more perfect way. This movie is phenomenal!!! I will go on a limb saying it is better than the original... and I have seen the original probably 50 times now. And this video by Jack's Movie Reviews is easily the best review/explanation of BR 2049 on the internet.

I 100% agree with you, leto's character was immensely fascinating and this video did a great job digging into some of the parts of his personality (big picture vs detail) that sets him apart from Tyrel and drives him forward.

I wanna watch this movie again so badly. The first one was already complex but 2049 is , imo, one level above that.
You Seem to have made up your mind about it , whereas to this day im not sure about joi and Jois and goslings relationship. Does it really not matter to him? And is she really just doing what shes Programmed to do? I found myself thinking that Theres more to it, sadly i cant watch it again in the near future. If 2049 goes one step further, imagine that not only (humans and) replicants are searching for identity and what it means to be human, but Joe now has to judge someone else whos not human on this Basis. I feel like the Film is very ambiguous in that sense, but maybe my memory is playing Tricks on me.

Jack's Movie Reviews ye i kinda feel the same way. I think their relationship was a catalyst for a lot of things and made Joe understand and appreciate certain themes, but in the end those are the things he takes with him that make him humane, not the relationship itself. I love the scene with the big Hologramm, cant even imagine what was going through Joes head. But i feel like his thoughts go into that direction, he realises what he has to do and understands the relationship between rather&daughter.

In her death scene, she was clearly afraid right before Luv stomped on the emanator, which suggests that she had a sense of mortality and wanted to live. This in turn suggests that she had consciousness and in the film's logic, a 'soul'.

I totally agree on the best sci-fi movie of the last few decades, as well as the part where it offers so much to discuss. This movie spans a myriad of UA-cam video analysis, practically all of them with a lot of insight. Blade Runner should win all Oscars, but then again, that show lost credibility ages ago.
If you want to focus on character names, Joi is probably linked to a type of pornography - Jerk-off Instruction. It's where the chick doesn't actually physically interact with anyone in the video and instead just talks directly to the viewer, encouraging them, pretty much what Joi does in the film.

Excellent analysis. 6:44 to 6:49 - probably the best line in the entire film. That is the delivery of a dogged actor, and a master of his trade. Harrison Ford didn't just come back for another take to half-ass it and score some easy money because he had to be part of the sequel. He's putting all of his weight behind the word "stranger", because he understands Villneuve's creation and means to do it justice.

I think 'sapper' in 'Sapper Morton' is the military designation here. I think this is also a reference to the events mentioned in Black Out 2022, where armies of replicants fought each other for resolving human conflicts. He probably fought in the wars mentioned in that short, and probably had experiences similar to the characters in it as well.
Sapper's profile appears on a monitor in Black Out 2022 - during the scene with Gaff.

Waayyy back, I watched Dark Star and then Blade Runner on a Late night TV Channel, in the UK, in the late '80s - both had a very
profound effect on me, having just quit the Local Police Force when family issues were being swamped when the "exigencies of
the Service" threatened to dwarf my humanity. Up to then I had treated Sci-Fi with some disdain, not realising that there was a
human inside me that really wanted to know his own soul..... Blade Runner, and its various incarnations fascinated me through the
rebuild of my humanity, my family, and myself, my soul. Now, years later, Blade Runner 2049 was a shock, a really extensive shock, and your interpretation has really helped me to balance my own perception of reality with what is actually going on all around.
BR2049 can only really be appreciated after exposes like yours, and I truly thank you for your ideas.
Great video! Definitly Blade Runner 2049 is in my top list of 2017 movies. It is so beautiful in every way posible. The story and the main question about what make us humans is fascinating, and the visuals are something from another world. How Villeneuve play with the dicerent tones of colors, with the rain and the dust, so poetic. The fact that they have recreated visualy the character of Rachel like in 1982 is something incredible. And the score made by Hans Zimmer deserves an Oscar without a doubt, so powerful and deep. I know that it sounds like im exagerating but thats how i see this movie. Like pure art, so rich in storytelling, so beautiful and so fascinating.

Blade Runner 2049 was a really good film, I enjoyed it even though I never watched the original Blade Runner. Its also actually one of the best film sequels, or a sequel done right.

greenblackout Because Blade Runner the 1982 original is already critically acclaimed and well regarded film by almost universally everyone. I am not saying that as a excuse as I wanted to or should have but didn't had the time as I was focusing other things.
Not mention making a follow-up to a popular movie, it is not easy and can be a daunting task as you got to live up people's expectations and try to do stuff right or different. Because 90% of the time, the sequel ends up bombing.

This has gone down, as one of my all time, favorite movies and the moment K finds out that Joi was following her program to make home feel good, I almost cried. Very few movies have ever pushed me to that point but dammit man that shit hurt my heart. I felt that bad for guy.

I also interpreted the ending as K enjoying his last moments as a brief memory he made himself.
The thing about Luv was that if Wallace wants someone who will simply do as he says and is designed to, why does he keep someone around who would clearly fail a baseline test? When Wallace kills the replicant from the plastic bag, Luv seems distraught and is crying and she cries again when Joshi tells her K killed the kid. Now you might think she was upset at failing but when she says something along the lines of "In the face of the fabulous new your only thought is to kill it" and the fact that again she is crying with watery eyes means she is invested in this cause and not merely doing as she is designed.
The end of the video gave me the chills... wow...

The film, to me, seemed to be saying the ability to create is what makes someone human. Whether that is to create love, joy, hope, change, or actual life. This feeds into the main struggle of a replicant giving birth. K gets to overcome his programming of simply obeying to creating hope and happiness by getting Deckard to his daughter. The end of your video was perfect!
That's an interesting perspective on K's last act. But I think one can also argue that his decision to free Deckard stems from the fact the he realize that even programmed and artificial beings are capable of making meaningful sacrifices for the ones they love or appreciate. In this contex Joi's programmed love and care is something K really appreciate and wants to replicate in his last sacrificial act.

Great analysis, I'm glad I discovered your channel!. I was surprised about your take on Luv, because through all the movie I felt like she was "breaking" programming, maybe because she was so emotional when killing and fighting. Her desire to be the best felt so human and became the most interesting character for me. But yes, maybe that's what Wallace thinks that humanity is and so she was programmed like that.

Man 2049 was my favourite movie by far! Maybe even my favourite movie going experience ever! If you haven’t yet I’d also highly advise reading the source material (Do androids dream of electric sheep), there’s even a graphic novel version that has every word in it (verbatim). The original Bladerunner is great but 2049 does a much more effective job of exploring the themes of the novel (imo)
Love this movie so much...gonna have to watch it again. Can't lie, I didn't notice the snow at the end. Made me swell up a little.
So many people missed most of the points pushed by the movie, at least in my social surrounding.
Beside what is said in this video, it explore a lot of major upcoming concept, like boundaries between human & AI, what's consciousness, what is and are we alive, relation to time and existence...
This movie was a near perfect piece of cinema.

I FINALLY saw this awesome movie today, at the cinema (important I think for this one) and was mesmerized, absorbed and felt totally satisfied as, as you say Jack, it is a most fitting sequel to one of the best sci-fi films ever made!! I felt everything you said, Jack, while watching it!!! I couldn't wait to come home and finally watch your analysis!! Wonderful!!!

Great review....This is a film that will be studied in film schools and in English classrooms for decades imo. So deep and meaningful.... sucks that the blu Ray didn’t have a director commentary!

Which is weird. When I went, my theater had what I think, is a normal amount of people. Not sure how it was like for other people.

Awesome review - and together with the great editing and graphics makes this probably your best video yet (and that is saying something).
Just sharing my own opinion, I'm totally fine with others: I think on a purely technical level the cinematography is ace, but on an artistic level it comes off as rather cold and lacks the gritty yet dreamy atmosphere that the 1982 original (any version) had. It's a matter of taste.
No doubt this is a truly great movie.

I prefer the look of the new film, but I certainly prefer Vangelis score. The new soundtrack suits the movie but it cannot beat the original.
mdi - as I stated: it's a matter of taste. The new movie definitely has a more contemporary look (as opposed to the classic 1980s anamorphic 35mm film look). Regarding music: I fully agree with you. As a musician myself, I agree with many of my colleagues: we live in a melody-less time regarding film music. It has become more of a sound design. The Vangelis score has melodic lines (and some simple but effective motifs which sound almost improvised and probably were) the new soundtrack has a similar "electronic" sound to it (with some added updates for a more contemporary sound) but is - conforming to modern tastes - devoid of melody - and even harmonic progression and counterpoint, but I won't bore anyone going into more detail - it has been laid out elsewhere.
Rachael eyes weren’t green. They were brown like Wallace created. When deckard said “her eyes were green” I think he’s basically saying no copy could match the real Rachael.
Rachel didn't have green eyes. She had brown just like the reproduction. And that was what Deckard realized. She was a reproduction not the original. The original was the skull sitting on the table in the same room. That's what Deckard realized. That and the necessity to protect Ana from Wallace to the point he was willing to be taken off world and tortured to keep her protected at all cost. As for Wallace, wasn't he evil? I thought he was. And as for whether K died in the end..... depends on whether the sequel gets written or not.
