The Best Football Players in the World... Ever!!! but who are the Greatest Footballer of all time?
Back in the spring of 2005, the good people at Sky TV, UK came up with the winning concept of broadcasting 10 one-off tv shows with the purpose of allowing members of the public to vote for the greatest ever legends in their particular sport.
Each show focused on one sport e.g. cricket, tennis, golf etc. On the show, an expert judging panel of four experts would whittle down the prospective legends to 10 individuals for the public to vote for their favourite.
So here is the episode which was attempting to find the greatset footballing legend.
The panellist were Former England manager Graham Taylor, pundit Phil Thompson, jornalist Joe lovejoy and the late great Sir Bobby Robson. Presented by the ultra cool Des Lynam and the, now sadly, late Sir David Frost
FYI: Seemingly, the candidates are presented in no particular order. Also, given this is a UK based show there is much of a UK bias.

Pelé appeared as a phenomenon of precocity, ignored the pressure and won a world cup at 17 years old ! Continued to haunt the world and beating giant after giant with the Saints ! Do not tell me that at that time the fitness was poor and so on. If this was true why nobody did what did pele ? Pelé many of its goals in the Brazil league, but they forget to say that the league of Brazil was very strong at this time because this time our good players did not leave the country . Set records , won another world cup in 62 when soccer was already well disputato and millions of practitioners ... in 66 was injured and succumbed with Brazil in a typical case of superb ! in 70 it was the player who had set all the records , records which still exist today ! And the age of 30 won his third World Cup playing at the highest level ! And even playing in a era where information was not as easy as today , his throws and his fame spread in a way that only the best can make history

You're right that many ignorant people today don't realise how strong Brazilian and S.American club football was in Pelé's time; easily a match for the best European clubs. And Pelé had a great scoring record v European teams, record holder for most Intercontinental Cup goals. Pelé #1, for sure

This programme has just given me perspective. My new opinion is that we have soccer legends for each generation and comparing between generations is a near impossible (partial) task. In 30 years people will not be talking about about Pele or Maradona, but of Messi, C. Ronaldo, Zidane, Ronaldo because for the younger generation those are our legends

The most naturally gifted footballers were Maradona and George best who could do literally anything with the ball.You can say whatever you want about their personal problems,but that's just a fact and no amount of rhetoric about such a player won more or such a player played longer or such a player was a better role model,or more people voted for such a player is ever going to change that.The best player ever is between those two.

To that fine list, I would add Ronaldo, Messi, Zidane and C.Ronaldo, even if 2 are still playing. I think we can allow in some modern players, even if many people today don't respect football history enough. Platini deserves more credit; he scored more goals for club and country than Maradona, led France to Euro 84, unlucky in 82 world cup semi, and was a better controller of matches- Maradona not such a great team player.

Only British would include Moore and Charles on the top ten list leaving Best out. There are and have been way better footballers. Anyways, I guess that if the program was French they would include Cantona and Henry. Or Romario, Ronaldo and Ronaldinho if they were brazilian. Kempes and Messi if Argentinian... and so on.
Gretel Hanzel I couldn't agree more. IMO football is a team sport, so unless you have a good team, you can't win any big trophies. Therefore I don't rate players by the trophies they have won or the goals they have scored, I rate them on pure ability and the level at which they can play the game. With that in mind, I can say that George Best was a much better player than Charlton and Bobby Moore will ever be. Here's my top 5: 1. Ronaldo Fenomeno Before his knee injuries, he was unstoppable. He had everything: speed, strength, skill, stamina, he could use both feet, etc. 2. Ronaldinho The most skilled player ever 3. Maradona 4. Pele 5. Cruyff / George Best

They haven't heard of Elías Figueroa. Even Beckenbauer said, in 1974, that the best defender of that world cup was Figueroa. A Chilean centre back, who only played three matches in the WC. It's a real shame he never played in Europe, if he had, people there would still be talking about him I suspect. Three times chosen Best Player in South America when he played for SC Internacional, in the Brazilian league, in a time when the likes of Pelé, Jairzinho, Tostao, Rivelino and even Zico were playing in Brazil.

the funny thing is, some fools out there decided not to recognize 500 goals of pele and he is still one of the top 3 goal scorers after the minus 500. the all-time assist leader is also pele with over 4,000. you can bet many have tried to reduce that number also, he will still be number 1 in assists after their reduction. some will argue that the game was easier for him back then. well it was when he played the European teams. it was no easier for pele than it is to have the Spanish national midfield (you know, the group that did not lose from 2006-2011), Ibrahim, villa ,suarez, neymar,, eto'o and others as your supporting cast, and thrashing celta de vigo with a trick penalty. lets face it, defenders did not have to worry about automatic red cards when tackling from behind, goalkeepers could waste valuable time playing keep away with their teams defenders. when it is all said and done, pele averaged 1.33 goals per game in international CUPS competition which happens to be his best ratio. what you need to figure out is how many trick penalty kicks will messi need to tie pele in assists. sure santos had national players, but pele did not have distefano and eusebio up front with him.
i know, thats the thing, football has changed dramatically over the last 50 years and its so difficult to nake a list of the greatest players because of the change in quality around them..

My dad is of the age to have seen all the great players from Pelé & on. Who is are the best players of all time if you asked him? Messi & Cruyff --there's a bias with Cruyff, though. We're from the Netherlands (don't get him started on '74).
The question posed was not who was the best role model or who won more international awards or who had the longest career. For sheer artistry and football talent it has to be George Best. That panel forgot that he played his first game for United at 17 and had nearly 11 years with the club. It is outrageous that the viewers were denied the opportunity to vote for him because Bobby Robson thought he retired before his best years. Christ, as if he didn't do enough up to then.

Cruyff, Di Stefano, Beckenbauer, Garrincha, Zidane, Eusebio and Muller would also be up there. The current best players IMO Messi and Ronaldo of course. I liked Best and think he is one of the greatest British players and top 20 ever. As for dribblers of course he is in the highest echelons but i'm just not sure he was BETTER than Garrincha, Maradona, Sivori, Matthews, Messi ... etc

In order to be able to judge whether one player is better than another you have to have a criteria against which you measure. So example ;- pace, passing , dribbling, tackling, heading, bravery, awareness, shooting right foot, shooting left foot, stamina, playing for the team, assists, goals and all this at the highest level either domestically or European/Worldwide.
I guarantee you that using a criteria like this no man finishes higher than George Best. And thats the reason hes so good. He had the lot. Now I didnt see Duncan Edwards but according to many who did see him he was on a different level, ie- Terry Venables, and many others.
If anyone has a n other system which allows you to judge ability between all the top players I like to see it.

World Cup football has certainly always been considered the biggest level of football, but it could now be argued that the standard of UEFA Champions League football surpasses it...
Of course, it's difficult to compare, but with Messi's great achievements in the UCL it could be argued that he has bettered many of the names on this list... (At least, surpassing the 4 players on this list who never won the World Cup...)
why do people have to compare..just enjoy the qualities and class they posses..
How can you compare players who played in the 50s with those who played in 90? :) It is impossible to compare them... level of play was much lower in the 50s... However, certain players was from another planet in the 50s or 60s... Like Pele, Puskas, Di Stefano or Eusebio. Players in the 80 or 90 could learn tricks from players from past eras....
So like for me The Best strikers was Pele, Puskas, Ronaldo Fenomeno and Batistuta.
The best midfielders was Maradona, Ronaldinho, Cruyff,
The best playmakers was Platini, Zidane, Pirlo, Zico.
The best defensive midfielders was Gattuso, Vieira, Makelele, Lothar Matheos.

ronaldo the brazilian is the GOD OF FOOTBALL. he could do what people would dream of. he is light years ahead of every other legend like pele or maradona. he had everything; strength, skills, control, speed, vision. he was a one man army. he won 2 ballon d'ors at the age of 18!!!! just check out his videos on youtube and even you will agree then.

Interesting choices. I am happy they have puskas in there because i believe he does not get nearly enough credit, but I wouldn't have platini in there. Don't get me wrong I think he was amazing, but there are just too many others I would have put in. Di Stefano for example or Garrincha or even eusebio. And as far as Goalies go: Gordon Banks was great, but seriously: Yashin! If there is a goalie that needs to be in there then it is him.

Wo, during a time where red cards did not exist, and players would be zealots with fouls? Don't think so. He was not even going to be a top scorer. He might have retired early in that time. John Charles was a magnificent defender, not just a top goal scorer and Juve legend. He deserves to be much better known. With him, Wales reached the world cup 1/4 final, which he missed through injury. Best didn't make the most of his talent, lacked discipline, never reached a world cup or Euro. Exciting but widely overrated..
