I still find Mary and Matthew’s wedding is the most enchanting and touching one, as they are such a match. Only Matthew can bring the soft side out of Mary as she said this herself too.
That's why Matt called her my Mary, however, Edith wedding to Birdie was my most enchanting

@@monique8641I think Thier love provided them gentle companionship more than anything else. A different brand of love, but chemistry can come and go in a marriage, the ability to be content in companionship whet e chemistry is on a light holiday is a good key to endurance

Absolutely OUR win finally, so difficult year after year to continually see Edith so defeated...But then, Mary’s happy Edith can be too. Their conversing about their being the ones left w/ the memories of all their “life’s characters & loves”...The ultimate gift, Edith ranks above ALL.

The little wobble in Anna's voice when sh makes her vows is absolute perfection! A really good bit of acting.

Daisy and William's wedding was so sad 💔 He was one of my favorite downstairs characters. 😢
You know it was overwhelming if even O'Brien was on the verge of tearing up...
What made it even worse was that Daisy didn't love him and didn't really want to marry him in the first place. But it was literally his dying wish and everyone was pressuring her to do it, so she did.

it is what a wedding is to me. Just the 2 of you promising standing by each other no matter what. Anything else is appareance and consumerism.
When a young lady has no parents to guide her in matters of the heart, it can be overwhelming! Daisy did care for William, and the adult women in her life did the best that they could to guide her. She gained a father that she needed and grew to love. And though her widows pension ( which William surely knew about and wanted her to have) helped her to better herself, its the family William gave her that was his greatest gift!

I found Daisy's wedding to a dying William to be the most heartbreaking moment. She didn't love him, but he died thinking he had won her love
daisy refused to get her widows pension. another maid jane also a war widow tried to get her to look into it but she refused as she didn't feel right about it.
Her getting the widow's pension was one of the strong persuasions William attempted to persuade Daisy to marry him.
"As a widow ... with a pension ... and rights ..."
The widow' pension wasn't that much for a private. As far as bettering herself, that didn't cost anything. Mrs Patmore paid for her lessons.
It was nice to see weddings to people who weren’t on the cusp of adulthood as is traditional but for all ages. For old ones, those married before and those attempting marriage more than once
And not everyone married in a church.

Lady Rose and Atticus Aldridge became officially married at a Registry Office in London, followed by a Jewish Blessing. The gown she wore at the Blessing was so elegant. Daisy and William Mason married in a bedroom in Downton Abbey mere hours before he passed away. Seeing the Dowager Countess of Grantham cry 😢 at your wedding is truly rare and remarkable. Not to mention the smack down she gave to Rev. Travis to get him to officiate the wedding ceremony.
Ironically the only weddings with 2 young adults are followed by a death

@@KoiYakultGreenTea yes indeed but they were closer to middle age than on the cusp of adulthood. Édith was born in 1892 so was 33 and Bertie looks a few years older .

I really believe that Lord Strallan WAS honest. He chose the wrong time and place to demonstrate this, and he wasn't exactly discreet in the way he did it either, but I DO think that he DID have lady Edith's best interests at heart.
Edith looks quite pretty here, she had such a journey.
I always rooted for her. She was jealous and bitter and neglected but the real biatch was always her sister 😂
@@susivarga7303 everyone always said how pretty and better Mary was. Her own parents said in season one that Edith would end up a spinster, and she was basically the 'ugly' sister. They always put her down...and I hated how they put Mary on a pedestal.
@@krys2007 Exactly. Edith was always the more relatable sister who was mildly abused by her own family. They desperately tried to portray her as the bitchy one but we saw right through the charade 😁😉Maybe that's why they changed her storyline.
Despite all she was kind and capable of selfless love. And she got a job and landed Bertie.
Mary, the ice queen on the other hand.... her attitude and nastiness took away all her supposed beauty. There was no loneliness or desperation behind it, just coldness.
Both of her wedding gowns were the prettiest of all of them.
@@susivarga7303 Me too. Edith was not always likable for sure, but Mary treated her as if she was muck on the bottom of her shoes.
Somr may say what Strallan did was out of love for Edith, but if he were man enough, he would have called it off BEFORE the wedding
We didn't say he was man enough but he certainly did it out of love. He loved her but he was selfishly carried away by the prospect of a new beginning, a new life. Happens to the best of us 😉

And it was no business of her granny to interfere , she made it easy for him to walk away - I have always wondered what has Edith done to deserve such a cruel family !!! Each time they have just given her neglect , cruelty , disdain - the same granny goes to Mathew to tell him he must marry Mary , but when she needs to stand up for Edith and make strallan understand the seriousness of the issue , she makes it easy for him to walk away - at the very least Edith should have got an opportunity to discuss it with him with no one interfering - this is one moment when I felt like getting violent with violet - like gagging her and tie her to a chair to keep her interfering mouth shut 😝
@@Emdee1234 that was a very British thing to do. Hard to explain. She knew it was over, she knew he didn't deserve her, she knew it was a bad match - now let's get it over with and avoid further scandal and embarrassment. That was her British upper class thinking.

I like how simple Mary and Henry’s wedding was, after Mary and Matthew’s.
It had to be in that time period because she was a widow. Anything more weddingly would have been seen as disrespect to Matthew's memory. That is why she wore a plain suit and not a gown. Edith only got a better wedding gown the second go round was because she was still a spinster. If she had been Gregson's widow she would have worn a suit too.

@@melvawages7143 Wouldn't Mary's second wedding also have been simpler because Henry was not the future Earl of Grantham? As for Edith and Bertie, I assumed their marriage was extra fancy because Bertie was such an exceptionally high-ranking gentleman.

Poor Edith was always deemed as the ugly duckling of the family but I always thought she was just as pretty as her two sisters.
I love Downton Abbey it's so easy to fall in love with all the characters to laugh and to cry with them to feel as if you are stepping back in time and are a part of that world

Daisy and William gets me every time. She’s marrying him for all the wrong reasons, and then it took her years to come to terms.
If Daisy had only looked at the situation the way William's father and Mrs. Patmore were, she might have understood sooner that actually she was marrying William for the right reasons, under those tragic circumstances. It would have been unconscionable to break William's heart during his final few days. I also think Daisy loved William far more than she realized at their wedding, because she felt the moment when William suffered the injury that killed him. One doesn't sense something like that without having a strong connection.
I don't like them together, they're cute but Daisy was confused and miss patmore kept pushing her to accept his proposal and lead him along even though she was clearly distraught by it
@@hannahday2228 We have to remember that Mrs. Patmore was terrified of William going off to war with a broken heart, because her own nephew had already been killed by the war and she feared for William if he started out with a sad heart. It was a terrible situation for everyone when William returned but was dying, and difficult as it was for Daisy, I think Mrs. Patmore and William's father were right to urge Daisy to marry him rather than break his heart on his deathbed. I actually think William and Daisy would have been a very happy couple had Daisy had time to realize that she did love him, but the war interfered. I think she and Andy will be happy too, though Andy is quite different.
@@rowanaforrest9792 Yes. Marrying William was Daisy’s only chance to rise into a better social station. She was able to enjoy her education and many other benefits as a war widow- and William could have a legacy through her, rather than dying without anything to leave behind. Daisy gave the father hope as well. There’s more to it than simple romantic love.
@@wchopkins6653 Indeed it wasn't as simple as romantic love. However, I don't think the small pension Daisy received as a war widow made much difference in her social situation. The pension was her only benefit, and she didn't need it to further her education. All she needed was to decide to do it and put in the effort. (Although, Mr. Mason as Daisy's father-in-law did strongly encourage her when she was ready to give up.) You're right, though, that both William and his sweet father will live on through her in a way. She certainly was a great comfort to Mr. Mason as his daughter-in-law. (That's one thing I wish had been addressed in the first Downton movie -- the budding romance between Mr. Mason and Mrs. Patmore. They were definitely sweet on each other by the end of the series, so I was hoping the movie would mention that they had married.)

I know there is another movie coming out next year; but, on the topic of weddings, what if….instead of doing sequels, Julian Fellowes could write a prequel, so we could see the Dowager as an Edwardian bride? UPDATE 12/20/21…I just read an article where Julian Fellowes already had this idea of a prequel in 2012💫 I promise, I came upon my idea of a prequel independently🙏🏻😁
This is a brilliant suggestion! There is much that could be plumbed in a prequel. I would also like to see a series on what circumstances (which were alluded to in DA) that caused young Robert to seek a rich American bride. We could also see what motivated Cora to agree to life in England. Was she bored in the US? Broken-hearted by a young Yankee scamp?
@@WBCRO This is so wonderful! I love your idea! You know, they still have those beautiful “cottages” on Bellevue Ave. In Newport! Perhaps they could do episodes there as well! We could also learn more of the backstories of the downstairs staff, that JF touched on here and there, and how they ended up at Downton very young. So many possibilities; maybe, we will never have to be without them🙏🏻💗
I like this idea, but that would require recasting all of the DA staples (at least the ones that would be alive for that prequel). I think it would not go over well with audiences if they did it as a movie, but maybe as a separate spin-off series.

Im a later viewer of Downton Abbdey. I just finished the series a week ago. A friend who knows how much I LOVE weddings (as long as I'm not the bride, ha ha! ) sent this link to me to watch after I finished the series.

When I had my catering service, I used to buy wedding cake toppers in thrift stores, yard sales, only the really nice ones that looked to be new & most of them had not been used or only used once. When I catered a wedding reception, I would have the client choose the wedding cake topper during the consultation. Most clients thought that they had to buy it from me if they wanted to keep it.
I always gave it to them if they wanted it. Some clients just wanted to use it & that was fine.
I still have a small collection of wedding cake toppers. The only one I wuld not give away is the one I bought at the V&A in London, England, GB.

@@ilahildasissac1943 Anna and Bates' wedding was the one at the Registry Office (Anna in the white blouse, blue skirt and hat). Bates is the Earl's valet and Anna is ladies maid to Lady Mary.
@@ilahildasissac1943 , I attempted to watch the series three times before I got hooked. A friend - who knows me well - kept after me to give it a chance. I’m now absolutely in love with the show and the characters having re-watched it at least twice all the way through. It’s worth a second chance, IMO. I even got my husband to watch and he speaks of the characters as if they are old friends now! LOL!

Just starting watching this show on Netflix. What an amazing show. I love everything about it and Edith is my favorite. I am so glad she finally finds happiness and out does her snooty and callous sister Mary. Its a shame that Sybil had to die because I think they could have done so much with the lady marrying the chaueffer storyline but I love how they made Tom such an important part of the family. LOVE absolutely everything about this show and every character manages to effect me in some way even the not so nice ones. I dont know where I was when this was on television but I am sure glad I found it now

Omg that man made me angry soo much. Like you woke up and got dressed and walked up that alter only to say no and humiliate Edith like that... Ahhhhh I know it's wedding jitters. I wish he had just gone through with the ceremony and not signed anything then later tell Edith or better yet cancelled early morning.
In The UK getting married in front of an alter (ceremonial wedding) instantly makes you married by law as well. That’s why you don’t need two separate ceremonies. So I’m afraid that would not have worked :S
@@b.3049 I get that but you still need to sign documents after that ceremony at this point it was just a verbal contract. I'm sure they wouldn't need to go to court to get a divorce. It's better than humiliating her like this... I don't know I'm just trying to save her from that humiliation 😂

It was a struggle for me to watch this because I kept tearing up and couldn't actually see.
There is such good acting in this drama, I mean you can actually spot Edith being worried because she has been left at the altar before. 👌🏻
Oh yeah, wish I could have witnessed Sybil and Tom getting married. This is my only regret with the series.
