It's striking how much more clear and articulate the Union leaders are in comparison to the Govt. representatives doing the news rounds.
It's easier when you are telling the truth.
"It's striking"... I see what you did there! 😉👏
Jokes aside though, it really is. Most people have some kind of understanding that the politicians and mainstream broadcast media are lying frauds but when their dishonesty and obfuscation is explicitly contrasted with the clarity and legitimacy of the counters from the union leaders, it still takes you back. It's because the union leaders are actual real people, unlike the politicians and TV presenters who live in a total fantasy world and are essentially characters created by PR teams to carry out a role on behalf of the powers that be to maintain the status quo.
Partly because they don't need to work off a script for their argument to work
the truth will set you free as they say. tory economics are simply indefencible to anyone with any critical thinking.
I think we all know why that is tbh . One side is telling the truth and the other has been found out as habitual liars and charlatans
Even my small children understand the injustice that’s happening here. As a matter a fact we went to support teachers this morning and we shall continue to support all the people on strike, fighting for THEIR BASIC HUMAN RIGHTS!!!

You raise some very valid points Mark. Enough is enough, we need an honourable government that actually cares about the people of this country.
It’s s depressing to hear how eloquent, understanding and intelligent all of the leaders of the unions have been when we think about the absolute fools we have in government.
4:30 - says it all when workers who were once above minimum wage are now on minimum wage! As he said, "That is the best illustration of a government that has suppressed pay so much that 47000 of its workers are on the minimum wage yet they do vital jobs."
To quote Chris Rock, to pay someone minimum wage is to tell them, "Hey if I could pay you even less, I would. But it's illegal."
How can it be described as the minimum wage, when people need to claim benefits to live.
@@weirdlytrue So true!!! I was just quoting the guy to show how the government has shrunk people's living income! But yeah, if people need foodbanks, the wage is way below minimum!!!
If we reentered the EU, I'm sure that we could import cheap Eastern European labour to do these jobs... and Remainers would have shorter EU queues to join at airports, when they go on holiday!
(... maybe people currently doing these jobs couldn't afford holidays... or food to eat... but it would boost gdp, and make it easier for Remainers with money to have cheaper weekend breaks in Europe!)
(... to any Remainers reading:... I'm being ironic!... I know you have difficulty with consequence-of-choices, greed and mental stuff...)
@@andrewwalsh2755 For Christ's sake, labor shortages... ARE A BAD THING. In a shortage situation some people will make more money, but that is only redistributing a shrinking amount of wealth to a few people, no wealth is created out of a shortage because obviously the economy is shriking. You need people to do stuff to create wealth. If there's too few hands picking fruits in a field (because you kicked all the Poles out), then fruits become more expensive for everyone. Sure, the remaining fruit pickers make more money, but only if they're not buying fruits.
Fascinating, never heard him speak before - probably even better than Mick L at getting his message across and putting the plain facts to the great unwashed (including those in the media hopefully). Before leaving for Oz in 1968 I was a Civil Servant - definitely not a Sir Humphrey even though my first (clerical) job was in the Cabinet Office. The key point about what I was doing, however, as it was the following year in Customs and Excise (and for my first three years in Australia), was that my job was important. It was a very small wheel turning so that the greater and larger wheels could continue to do so - as it is with all public sector work. It's the oil that enables the machine of State to function. The Tory approach? Screw the machine, sell the oil, pocket the proceeds...
Couldn't agree with you more
I was in PCS before I got too sick to work as I worked in a Jobcentre. I worked there for 12 years. It was great at the start (under Labour) but I watched it get worse and worse. Full support for the strikers. The civil service has been squeezed so hard since the Tories came in that this is absolutely understandable now
Great analysis.
This guy is yet another brilliant spokesman for his union and the British working class. He needs more air time
Not just pay, during the last decade our Pension pot pillaged... twice! and redundancy package reduced to make it cheaper and easier to get rid of staff.
This shows the contempt our government has for public sector and how they are trying to dismantle it...... death by a thousand cuts.
EVERYTHING HE SAYS RIGHT ✅️.
He gets the dates wrong at 2:54. He meant to say 'pay is closed for 2023. Let's talk about 2024'
@@OBWAT civil service pay rises don’t come into pay packets until August, even though they’re settled long before that.
@@frugalitystartsathome4889 That's great, but doesn't refute my comment.
@@OBWAT it does, actually. It’s only February. They would have been discussing pay until well into July if the government hadn’t already made up its mind what any offer was going to be (“offer” being a bit of a misnomer, since they will just force it through anyway on the basis that it’s that or nothing). Indeed, I’ve known a pay rise not to go into pay packets until the following February, in the days when there used to be actual negotiations between the government and unions. So to say “2023 is settled, let’s talk about 2024” when it’s still only February of 2023 is merely an indication of refusal to negotiate.
@@frugalitystartsathome4889 You need a basic level of deductive reasoning to interact with comments. Your combativeness to react to what you think are political points has left you blind to the observation being stated. Serwotka says "the minister says the same thing. Pay is closed for 2022, let's talk about 2023". He meant to say "the minister says the same thing. Pay is closed for 2023, let's talk about 2024", as he has done in other recent interviews. He misspoke. The OP said "EVERYTHING HE SAYS RIGHT", which is incorrect, for the reason I pointed out. Hence you are incorrect, and so is the OP.
All I got to say that was brilliant 👏
I totally support all of the workers on strike and we must stay strong against the corruption of the tories and their cronies

Fabulous coverage. Thank you JOE Politics ! Very well put by Mark Sahota. Very sad at how low paid civilservants actually are but the government will have you believe different.
Good to see Mark getting the limelight he deserves. I’m a civil servant and been following along with PCS and it’s good to see the CS system having its arse made bare. I’ve had to move departments to stressful jobs that I’m nowhere near qualified to do just to pay my bills, because the only way to get a pay rise in the CS is to job hop. As a result the services we provide suffer because nobody is in the same job long enough to provide any consistency, out of necessity to survive
I'm into my 4th decade as a Civil Servant. Since 2010 I have had a payrise of 1.5%. My hourly rate is £9.80 an hour. Not all Civil Servants work in Whitehall as Mark says. As Mark says my hourly rate will rise to £10.42 an hour in April to keep up with NLW. Since 23/03/2020 we've worked through the pandenic paying benefits and our case load has risen by 3 times with no light at the end of the tunnel. At one time the media would report the unemployment figures each month and people claiming benefit. Now the Tory's brag about the number of people in work but forget to mention possibly 75% are still eligable to benefits.
Yep, and when you finally retire your fabulous pension - so often trumpeted by those who believe what they’re told by those who don’t know anything about it - will likely amount to a little over £100 per week, which will be just enough to ensure you pay some tax when added to your state pension (which, like everyone else, you will also have been paying into for forty-odd years, as well as your CS one)…because the CS is like everywhere else, there are those at the top receiving ridiculous remuneration for little more than wearing a suit and knowing the right people, and there are the rest of us cogs in the machine. Without us, the machine doesn’t work, but all we get is platitudes from the top whilst being expected to just get on with it and be grateful for having a job at all.
What a amazing speech that shocked me that so many hard working civil servants are on not just mimuim wage but on the benefits they administer...this government is a utter disgrace to humanity in this country..the speech was damming in every way..I hope they get the pay rise they deserve and kick this hypetcritical government out.
If only we had people in government like these union leaders ! No BS, no smokescreens and mirrors, no outright lies, no u-turns.... no conscience. Just telling it like it is. Big support for all strikers !

The DWP have been a godsend for me this past few years. I am a proud working man who has been(and continue to) through hell and back with my crippling mental health, and if it wasn't for the NHS, UC, and the DWP, my situation would be damn near deaths dorr this past few years. The kindness of strangers has, and always will be, the reason I still cling to life, and to see so many good folks needlessly struggling, infuriates me so damn much it is literally painful and heartbreaking. I fully support these strikes, and any future action these folk deem necessary so we may actually start living in a civilized society. God bless every single damned one of you.

Solidarity to all the strikers. ✊🏼✊🏾✊🏽🚩
Excellent spokesperson!!! How can 'vital' workers be paid less than and inflation proof salary?
Totally agree with what you said! But also remember that none of these strikes are just about pay! They're about the government trying to destroy the workplace, get rid of thousands of jobs, tear up worker contracts (which the workers have to abide by but the employer doesn't), push up profits at everyone's expense to benefit the greedy and the wealthy, etc. etc. So yes, pay is an issue. But there are many, many more issues that workers are fighting for in order to save our industries and work places!
What is vital work? By definition, if a certain job is vital then those employed should have a no-strike clause in their employment agreement. If the clause is not there then their job is not vital.

The Tories seem to assume that if they shut their eyes and ears, and shout "La-la-la...", the public will eventually turn on the strikers.
When in fact it's they who are increasingly hated by that public.
They forget that the strikers are - increasingly - that very public.
The only thing missing right now is that it dearly needs to be a General Strike.
And what happened to the £37 billion for Test and Trace? Would have covered every public sector payrise and THEN SOME.
When the Civil Service outs the Government people need to sit up and listen.
We didn’t have a General Strike in the 70s although we came close. We need one now
Some wise words here.
Yep...the people have had enough.
It's obvious, and they know it, you can't work 50hrs a week and struggle with normal expenses, no meals out, no holidays away (or at home), best is a couple of beers and the telly (if you can afford the licence) They do know mortgage rates are rising?
Out of everyone this fella makes the most sense, years ago everyone was trying to get a job for the government or council but now you get paid more if you work for the supermarkets or supply the supermarkets
I wish I could strike but the Dept I work for are not allowed to. I was forced to accept the paltry 2%. 2% of my salary grade is not worth having . It might buy me a few basic range groceries for a week or half a day Electricity. 2% of a government ministers salary would triple my salary overnight! I will be one of those low paid Civil Servants who will get a pay rise when the minimum wage goes up. I support all public servants striking for a better deal. I am with you in mind if not body.
Yes, and Mr Serwotka conveniently forgets the times his union has allowed these conditions to be imposed on civil servants in the past, without so much as a squeak of protest…where was he when he didn’t have Mick Lynch to walk beside, I wonder?
Private sector empyees are getting on average pay rises over 7 percent. Some people are getting 2 pay rises this year, because of inflation. Due to Brexit there is now a shortage of people to fill jobs, something we have not seen since the 80s

One does wonder if government has forgotten the service it is to offer. Imagine the person that takes upon their shoulders the responsibility to represent, advocate and defend the rights of a people. Imagine further that some of these people, in return, offer their labour in return for remuneration to support the needs of many. It would would thought to be a gesture so noble on both sides. But what happens when those trusted to represent, advocate and defend the rights of a people instead choose to choose to represent others? Others that are few. Others that have means to renumeration far greater than most. It seems that today governments around the world are forgetting their role. It is a calling... to listen to people, decide what should be left truly to the people as their own responsibility, and take on the role on matters the effect those people. To be fair, we have lost our way, as a people. Those that should represent are, at times misguided (diplomatically put). Equally, those that choose to have representation must choose wisely, giving as little responsibility over so that when a misguided leader fails... it remains small and cab quickly be recovered. To those that have become misguided (and those that remain but equally represent) I offer an invitation: remember that government serving the weakest, quietest voices of a downtrodden people is the noblest of roles and the rewards to those people are worth more than platitudes and empty promises.
If I take the government's report conducted by the Hays group in 2012 and adjust those figures for inflation I should be paid £14000+ more than I'm currently on.

Having over 40 years experience of the civil service, I (and he) will recall the years of frozen pay i.e. NIL substantive pay rise or below inflation pay settlements - despite higher interest rates etc. The civil service has been systematically destroyed by successive governments.

A civil servant is a woman or a man..... Finally some sense!
The problem isn't the pay. It's the lack of production while the productive are made to pay. 50% of working age people are on some kind of benefit. Economic mismanagement on an epic scale. The problem is the money being robbed of purchasing power. This approach will do nothing to change anything. Giving people more money to pay higher prices keeps prices high. We need fewer people on the take and more people working. More supply brings prices down. Low wages aren't a problem in an economy with low and stable prices via production.
according to Rees Mogg, Brexit has saved the country £183 billion so why can't they pay what is being asked for by the strikers?
