God bless, and see you in the next video :)
the last tips about the OK button to playback photo is so useful!
Thanks for the tips. I just bought my second Df. I sold the first one to buy my D810. It was a good move for me, but now with my D810 and D500, having a Df is the perfect "fun" camera to round out my collection.
Thank you Dave! I'll be rewatching this on Monday when my Df comes in.
Looking forward to hearing your take :)
Dave - One more valuable item. I have programmed the Auto ISO on and off toggle to the Fn button. Allows you to press the Fn button, then turn Auto ISO on and off with the sub-command dial. Another oversight by Nikon can be easily corrected. Alternatively, you can program the Fn button to go to your top menu item, which you can select as Auto ISO on or off.
Thanks for sharing Joe Swick. I don't use Auto-ISO but yes: if you access menu items that's a great way to do it.
Thanks for the tips.
I could easily customize my D300s setting as the menu are very similar to the Df.
Thanks for the kind words Sambo :) Yes: glad Nikon lineage isn't all lost.
thanks a lot dave , i get mine in 5 days i cant wait to recheck your video to see if its the way i would like to set mine
Glad to help Andoz :) Looking forward to hearing your thoughts too.
ok after using it for 2 months now i must say im completely in love it its just a shame that i can imagine af to be a lot faster so i could use it more than what i already use it !! ... its probably the only reason for me i still have the d800 ( occasionally for crop too but for me not that much of a big deal ) ... i also sometimes have af troubles with the 105 dc , 14 2.8 and 200 f4 macro lenses which are solved as soon as they are remounted .. odd .... also i wish nikon made new lenses that match the styling .... this would sounds stupid but i never feel like using my amazingly awesome 70-200 vr2 with this because it just feels wrong to me :( and am even contemplating getting the inferior 80-200 d just so it goes together... :/ ....shh xd
Yeah: would be nice for Nikon to release a line of lenses with apertures on-lens to complete the feel. Glad you're loving it!
this is a crazy good review of settings. good job. i'd use pretty much everything you mentioned, plus or minus. been shooting nikon about 15 years, and didn't know you could turn off the focus on shutter button- how new is that off-feature, any idea?
Excellent, thanks !
Well done!
Thank you
very nice video!
Thanks Steve Beck ! Glad you enjoyed it :)
great review, thanks
Thanks for watching jp15sil24 :)
Only thing about AF-C is it's a little less precise than AF-S but I use mine the same way you do although I've noticed AF-S is a bit more accurate when AF.
Looks like you have the black one as well, any difference in feel? I've read the silver feels more plastic. Would love to see you do a formal review.
Didn't think to compare them until you asked. Surprisingly there is a big difference in the feel: black is a rougher texture which makes it easier to grip. The silver does feel more "plasticy". Hope that helps.
Hi Dave. Great video. I did few of your settings. Could you please help me out? I set the minimum shutter speed at 1/100 but it doesn't work. When I lock the focus and move camera to compose my picture, the light sensitivity will not be anymore on where I focussed. thanks
Not sure why you're telling me your shutter speed? Because we shoot manually, we don't have to worry about the meter being fooled when re-composing. If you want to use the back-button AF method AND need to use AE-Lock, you can assign the Preview or Fn button to lock AE when needed. Hope this helps.
Great tips, thanks. I'm curious what you recommend for ISO settings. I tend to think treat the camera like a film one and switch between just a few manual ISOs as if I was using different film backs (indoor, outdoor, etc.). Do you ever use Auto-ISO?
Good question. It's never a bad thing to know several ISO's so well :) Personally we're 100% full manual shooters so never use auto-ISO .
I like the ISO dial best, too. But, I use Auto ISO as default, then select manually when time/conditions permit. It looks like you still have to go into menu hell to turn Auto ISO on/off. Would have been nice to have it handled by the ISO dial, then you'd only need the menu for changing auto ISO min/max.
Totally. There are certainly some quirks to this camera ... though less than with the Fuji X100s.
You can set Fn button and use Fn button + sub-command dial (small dial) to set Auto ISO/Manual ISO. Also, if you want to see ISO in the viewfinder, you can set it in the Menu. Please read the user's manual carefully.
Hi dave, if you are using nikon af-d lenses, let's say 50mm f/1,4 D, can you change the aperture on the lens manuall or still have to use the command dial? Thanks!
+Aldrian Tioe Either, I believe. But need to set it in-camera settings.
Can auto ISO be set in manual?
Yup
Hey Dave, can you confirm whether the focus screen is permanently attached to the body or it can be changed via third party focus screen. such as focusingscreen.com. I asked the their site manager and they told me the df swapping focusing screen project is undergoing. However I don't know any more details. Thanks Dave. Btw, if by any chance you have a manual lens, how do you feel about it on df? Thanks again
Nikon says it doesn't have interchangable focusing screens, so I'm pretty sure a third party solution would void your warranty. I also don't have any manual-focus only lenses, so can't comment on their use with the Df.
***** what about manual focusing with auto focus lens in M mode? I believe the the mechanics are the same, k man, what I want to know is the viewfinder performance? compare to your D4, about the same or?
Never shot the D4 manually focused, and don't plan to start with the Df. Really, the stock optical viewfinder is not a great way to judge focus when shooting 1.4 lenses.
Hello guys,
Just asking since I'm new about DLSR world.
Can i use Canon 50mm f/0.95 Dream Lens on Nikon DF, sorry I'm a bit noob, but i love this camera vintage look :).
I like Nikon Df, but at the same time i like Leica M9 tho. I always want Canon 50mm f/0.95 Dream Lens :(.
Im a street journalist, i love taking portrait + bokeh addicted.
Any suggestion, i save 30k by the way. Help me :(.
Don't know the answer but I can *definitely* help you spend your savings :D
Or, does the silver look more "cheap?" I've heard that as well.
How we customized our Nikon Df
except for the autofucus , I set my Df the same way.. cheers
i hear something bad about autofocusing of nikon df in lowlight
can not lock focus in -1EV, hunting focus
it isn't good, don't like D7000 or d600
they was build in same autofocus system
Hiếu Nguyễn Thanh Totally spot on. We've since moved to D750's (reviews and setup videos can be found on my channel) and are *much* happier with low-light focus.
***** thank you
but, i do not care about D750
i like retro style DSLR, and so, df is best chose
i am going to buy a df, but it's autofocus systems is problem
i used a D7000, it work very good, looking focus so fast in low light condition, indoor example
i read a review in dpreview.com, they say autofocus systems of nikon df is disappointing
you had one df, and df had one firmware update , tell me it was improvement ?
did the same thing with "ok", unless im totally missing it my d610 doesn't have this! wtf nikon lol all these small inconsistencies drive me nuts
I still never see anyone set up shoot menus on Nikon cameras to be an ISO controller. If you shoot RAW picture controls don't matter.
Now I know why you have a small number of viewers and commenters on the Nikon Df series of videos. You are trying to push a round peg into a square whole.
+John Hnatek I'm actually just trying to use it to take pictures ;)
Thanks for the tips.
I could easily customize my D300s setting as the menu are very similar to the Df.
awesome advice! thanks
