I’ve raised three skunks since I was a boy... I found five babies whose mother had been hit by a car when I was twelve years old. (1967) We took them to our veterinarian and he checked them out, and found homes for four of them. He descented ours and we raised him . Our pet dog took to him and mothered him. It was hilarious to watch, she was extremely protective of him as she had been with her puppies. We had Snoopy for several years. When I joined the military in 1972 he was still doing fine... My sister then adopted him and he lived a couple more years... Spoiled rotten, but happy.
In 2004 my wife found two tiny babies in our yard . Mom was on the road hit by a car. We took care of them and raised them both, they were then reintroduced to being skunks, and lived on our property... never caused us any troubles

My mother took in or "adopted" a baby Porcupien several yrs ago that we figured had lost its mother. He would come up on the porch daily and scratch at the door to let her know he was there for food and to say hello. He would actually play with us both and it was a neat experience. He now comes back yearly to say hi and show us he's doing great. I truly believe he thinks MY mother is also his as well!

In the 80’s I was delivering newspapers to the rectory near the Mission San Diego de Alcala and saw a skunk with its head stuck in a plastic mayonnaise jar. I called animal control and they called a lady in Lakeside to come help me. While she held the skunk, I cut the jar off with my pocket knife. We both got sprayed but I just rode my motorcycle home and threw away the clothes that I had on. San Diego has plenty of them.

My husband and I did the same thing when mama got ran over. They are awesome critters, funny playful, and loving. Their only defence is their spray. Without it they are in danger. They are not mean. People have been taught many wrong things in life. They wouldn't hurt your chickens, but can, they are after the egg not chicken. They get into trouble because they just want food. They do not have good vision, please don't harm them. They are good. I've had 11 at one time feeding here. They come every night and eat the cat food. They cats sit very still while they are here. I have pictures of them all eating together. I LOVE them. They are truly beautiful and a joy to my life.

They're actually extreme extroverts with attitude. I work graveyards at an amusement park and we got quite a lot of skunks roaming the park at night. They don't have very good eyesight and only so-so hearing so they basically sniff their way around the park all night for food while we're working. They're so oblivious I've had them walk within 3 feet of me while I wasn't paying attention and they had no idea I was even there. They just do whatever they want and are basically constantly surprised all the time. Luckily they don't actually spray right away like people think, they'll just turn and run and if you follow then they'll hit you. Ours are so used to people and so fat from all the spiders and other bugs they just kinda bumble away. It's pretty cute. They really have no sense for anything around them though.

Skunks are actually lovely creatures and the young ones are VERY cute. I LOVE SKUNKS! When I was in my 20s, there was a pet store in the mall in Daytona Beach, FL that would sell descented baby skunks in the Spring. They would get in a batch and put them in one of the front showcases. I couldn't resist; I bought one and named her Chloe. She was a wonderful, sweet, playful, entertaining pet. She ate cat food, fruits, and vegetables, and used a litter box. She would chase me down the hall and then turn around at the end so I could chase her. She would do the pounce and stomp like these babies in the video. She had a very long, thick coat and super fluffy tail. I washed her in the bathtub about once a month and trimmed her nails. She hated the bath part and never got used to it. I also had dogs. Chloe would hiss and stomp to keep them away from her food bowl when she was eating. She loved going outside to dig in the sand around my pond. She lived about 12 years dying peacefully in her sleep. I would love to have another one, but it's currently illegal to have one as a pet in most states.

I had 2 greyhounds, an afghan, a saluki/borzoi mix, and 2 borzois at the time, and 2 cats that would occasionally share her food bowl. I worked for the Humane Society for 4 of the 12 years I had Chloe. A domestic male skunk was brought in as a stray and not claimed when Chloe was around a year old. I adopted him thinking Chloe would enjoy a companion her own species. She didn't. She started spending most of her time under the bed and he got very possessive of her, chasing me away and biting my feet when I tried to get in bed. I kept him for 3 weeks, but the situation for both Chloe and me just got worse. I had to take him back to the shelter. I was very relieved when he was adopted into a home with a cat but no other skunks. I checked on him from time to time; he became a great pet after a week of re-socializing.

I never pat my racoon buddies or hold them. I talk to them & present benignly. An 8-10 ft distance is kept because I don't pat or hand feed. This allows some safety ahead for them. We never know when our time is up. 7 years ago, I planted 2 apple trees, 2 pears, 2 peach trees, 3 grape vines & leave a large stainless steel bowl of H2O to compensate for the piracy of development. I agree, tame wild animals do not always make good wild releases. My friend runs a wildlife rehab and doesn't tame the animals when she raises them. She uses boards to hide herself and a glove that matches the parent and she never talks to them. Animals don't get talked to when being raised. When she releases her animals, they are yet to see a human. That's doing it right, imho. She has a very high rate of successful releases into the wild, and none go up to humans.

I once had an Uncle who had a pet skunk for years. It was given to him when a tiny bottle baby. When he was old enough, the Vet removed the “spray” mechanism. That skunk was Uncle’s companion everywhere he went. He even had a harness and leash for walks. Sam outlived my Uncle so his son took Sam in since Sam knew and had played with my cousin’s two children.
I’ve heard other people say they’ve raised baby skunks and that they make good pets; liken to a cat.

I used to work at a school in a rural area, people would donate cats to the FFA program, to keep vermin out of the barn and feed. There were some skunks that lived in a hole in the far corner of the building. The loose dogs from the housing nearby would come and root through the outside trash barrels, and sometimes meet up with the skunks and get sprayed. And then the school would stink for awhile.
Kids dump a lot of uneaten food, so the feral cats would get into it too, and they seemed have a kinship with the skunks. They seemed to get along pretty nice. I would see cat and skunk eating ham sandwiches or whatever the kids wouldn't eat side by side. One time the mama skunk brought out five adorable babies in a row along the base of the school building. Sooooo cute.

My grandma used to tell me stories of having pet skunks while she was growing up. Her dad didn’t care for cats, so he used to tame skunks to keep the rodents out of the barn. She explained to me how her dad used to remove the scent sacks when they were tiny.
I’ve wanted one ever since; she made them sound so sweet.
I had two pet raccoons as a teenager, then turned them loose in my barn when they grew up and they eventually went out on their own.
I live in Alaska now, and skunks are illegal to own here because they do not actually live here in nature, but if they did I would definitely try to figure out how to have one.

Just goes to show some animals are like people, what they THINK (preconceived) they’re gonna do they DIDNT do. I had met one other person who rehabbed baby skunks. They too had said they were a joy to work with. They do get control over their “scent” glands once they practice so I had heard young skunks often had a “hair trigger” but they sure are alert , rambunctious and adorable. Cute how the cat thought great fun!

OK; toddler skunks practicing their pre-spray "stomping" has got to be one of the cutest things ever on the Interwebs. When I was a young child I distinctly remember meeting a man who had a pet skunk on a leash; as I recall he'd had the scent glands removed as they obviously make better pets that way... reportedly the lines of skunks which have been domesticated for over 60 years can be quite docile & loving (though tend to get into things), but I imagine they need extra protection from other animals as have little of their own when descented. Also recall several years ago we caught sight of a surfeit (group of skunks) of 4 juveniles on our semi-rural acreage; doubtless sibs, who upon spotting us moved in a tightly-knit group down the driveway w/tails in the air to make their escape... still makes me smile to remember it. :)

They really are sweet animals and got tame enough that they would meet us at lunch time to see what they could get :) Even bumped into one in the dark and no spray. I'd love to have one as a pet, just don't want inside my house sprayed but there's no doubt they could live with other pets and be okay. I'm sure they would be lap cats in no time.

They're so busy, they don't stay long. We've never been sprayed because we're careful and give them space if they're nearby. We've accidentally interrupted them, but they just ran away from us and didn't spray at all. They're very sweet and cute.

We have one away and kept one for a year and she never sprayed me but did get the neighbors dog. Her name was sweet pea and what a little lover. Because the world is dangerous to them. They cannot see well so they stomp if they smell or hear something. If anything moves suddenly they spray it's the only defence they have. I have skunks at my house eating with cats quite politely. No one sprays unless they feel a threat. The cats move cautiously around them and never get sprayed. I move cautiously, and am not sprayed. They just are hungry. They are very playful. I really enjoy them.
