I just had a gig Saturday outside. I had my canopy, a cooling fan, a actual outdoor fan, and a stand and my Mac still overheated. Lucky I had my USB to cover but the distortion was horrible. I needed this video last week! So I could if took my PC!

My M1 hasn't given me heat issues so far, may be just once, and the fan kicked in. It's been a great system thus far. I wish they came in the 16" size

They abandoned production for the the last 2 years with the development and support for the 16 inch Macbook Pro. A simple firmware would fix most of this issue.

I did an event outside last month in the humid south. No tent, no fans, and no real air movement because I was wedged in the corner privacy gating and a bricked house. I was playing tunes and video mixing to two tvs from an alienware. No issues. The event lasted 6 hours. 400p till 10p. The sun didn't set until 815ish.
I like my Macs but the heat down here is on another level. I lived and learned.
    Good information!

Hey Terry, recently discovered your channel and love your videos. A couple of things. I've been a mobile DJ now for about 12 years now, in the Caribbean - Trinidad and Tobago to be specific - so we know about heat! I've used both PC's and Macs. I love Macs though and I had a MacBook Pro 2011 as my main DJ workhorse over that time, until it recently died. One of the main things I discovered over the years is that the thermal paste on MacBooks does degrade quickly, as the MBP is worked. My cpu went from low usage in the early days to 99% despite upgrading to SSD, 16GB Ram and so on to try to counteract. So I would point the finger at thermal paste. I just got a MacBook Air M1. This is the best laptop I ever owned. It runs all the DJ software (Serato is my first choice) with no issues. I was worried from some reviews that it could not handle streaming from OBS and run Serato at same time, but no issues! The MBA M1 does not even get hot with Serato/OBS/other software all running and most importantly - no audio latency, stutter or overheating at all. I used to have a dual setup with an iPad to run Streamlabs OBS and only DJ software via the MBP, now the MBA M1 runs everything like a champ! #RiddimDojo

I own a Prime 2. End of July I was the house DJ for an outdoor concert from 10am to 10pm. Luckily I was in a gazebo. But overheating of equipment could have been an issue. But I’m happy to report that the Prime 2 had zero issues.

Switching from Serato to Rekordbox has lessened the CPU usage on my (2) 2015 MacBook Pros. Have always used a cooling fan base for outdoor events and no heat issues. I still use a tent or stay shaded as much as possible. Sometimes I bring a floor fan for those extra hot days. Work around, sure. But I would do the same if I need to run my backup PC Lenovo. No sweaty balls either 😂

In Israel you can go over the most famous DJs and they use only the 2015 and lower. Why? Because this is the last gen that had the 2 fans and can deal with the heat here. The best tips I can give from my experience is pretty much what Jesse said and get a backup one which can handle heat well. Also you can download Macs Fan Control which is awesome for cranking up the fans whenever you need it by 2 clicks.

Been watching my Macs overheat since 2011. Tip: #1: turn off your discrete video card if at all possible. Tip #2: a lot of times (especially with the new 16" Macs it's the actual USB-C port that's hot and not the whole computer. (had my 16" crash on me twice during a twitch stream in an air conditioned basement 🥴) so Tip #2.5 i guess? leave any and all ports unused that you can. at home i run one cable out to a hub and it's been working well. Tip #3: this is egregious but if you gotta play outside i keep about 10 of those lunch box ice blocks (like 5 bucks at target for 4) they are gel in thick plastic and don't produce a lot of moisture as they warm up. place them right under the ports and rotate them at long gigs. (this also means you're showing up to outdoor gigs with a cooler...but what are ya gonna do?) last but not least if you use an external drive (like me) the drive can also get hot 🥴 so that goes on a cool pack too. oh!!! bonus tip: keep your computer COLD as long as possible. if that means in your car with AC, if that means in the cooler or even the shade and ice cold
chasis has bought me some extra playing time. ok i'm done. stay cool friends!

I own a 2020 MBP 13 inch and have never had an issue with overheating. And I'm running Serato on an internal hard drive and also running Serato Video and Tidal at all of my events. I've played at venues in direct sunlight for hours with no issues. I also have a cover on my computer that keeps it even hotter. I wonder if this is an issue with the larger MBP's? Or maybe you have a dead fan or something? Bro.. I hope you find out what's going on. That would scare me. Have you tried sending it in for repair?

Had to do the whole gig from my iPhone. Was not a happy camper😡 I thought it was because of the heat considering where I was set up. ANY VIDS ON THE WORKAROUNDS YOU MENTIONED? • @dwai1967

@@dwai1967 that is true for the audio interface part, given that the audio interface part is "class compatible".

Thanks for the video. I played under a white tent and outside for my first outdoor event a few weeks ago with a HP Laptop. My Laptop was almost too hot to touch so, I put a dinky fan on it and it cooled it. I never felt my Laptop get that hot before.
It's good some people are reporting in that their M1 Macs are not overheating. I was looking at those but, I didn't like the 13 inch screen size. If Mac ever comes out with a bigger screen size then I may buy one.
I noticed at 2:31 that your the lip on your Pro X tray was aiming the other way. I can't do that with my Denon MCX8000 Pro X case because of the way the the foam is underneath. I wish I could do that. That lip is in the way of using a mouse and it feels a little sharp and uncomfortable resting my hand on it. I take the removable wood stip from the front and use it to prop my laptop up on and I use the lip so, my laptop doesn't slide towards me. I no longer use a mouse so, I will just live with it.

Hey friends…you can stop giving me tips lol. I know ALL the workarounds. The issue is simple, they’re ALL still a workaround. I said it in the video, very clearly, but it never hurts to say it agin. If you wear a size 10 shoe, but you really want to wear a size 8 so you cut the back of the shoe off and now your heel is hanging out the back. That’s a workaround, and a silly one to boot. Just giving you some perspective. You can do what you want. I’d rather not bring twelve fans and an icebox but I’m me and you’re you. It’s ok. You don’t have to be butt hurt about an opinion.

Curious George here... I noticed you also had your Prime Go with you over the weekend... did you have any issues with it in the heat? If not have the laptop issues given you at least 1 notion to use a Prime 4 during those types of gigs? I haven't heard how the standalone units hold up in the heat... Love the channel!

Definitely have had this exact issue recently at a couple of gigs smh……one time had to turn off all the “extra stuff” in Serato (PNT, high resolution, etc) and was able to make it thru…..the second time barely got thru doing a sound check and it wouldn’t even load the waveforms had to run to Walmart to get a fan then it finally worked I guess after it cooled down……that’s seems to be the trick unfortunately because last time I had an outside gig I immediately had the fan running and didn’t have any problems the whole gig

I understand the objective of this video but I'd like to point that 1. They are two different CPUs. 2 The Macbook Pro 16" equipped with i9(TDP 45W) is known for having heat limitations while the i7 inside the XMG has a lower energy design (TDP 15W). 3. The XMG is made specifically and optimized for djing while the Macbook Pro targets audio/photo/video/production/editing and is more like a workstation. I think it would be more reasonable to compare the XMG DJ 15 to a future Macbook Pro 14/16 M1. On the other hand, your video is extremely useful to show that PCs can deliver great performance when it comes to djing, sometimes even better than powerful and expensive Macs.

    • @ClevelandTerry
      @ClevelandTerry  3 роки тому +1

True, but MacBooks are notorious for heat issues regardless of model. Comparing an xmg with a quad core i7 should pair up nicely with a quad core i7 MacBook if we really want to get scientific. The M1s are another animal altogether.

I could not take any chances… Good video my brotha!!!!

Here's the million dollar question? So that specific PC you have is built for djs and optimized for the beating . Will this apply to any decent PC on the market? I see tons of djs who use PC complain about overheating. So is their anything special under the hood of that particular machine your using that may differ from an average PC?

    • @ClevelandTerry

It all about heat dissipation. Some computers try to be macs and close all the necessary ports up or put an overpowered processor in the case which can’t be cooled effectively but the xmg is great for heat, I’ve heard the razor is great too. The issue is, at least with pc you have the option of different materials and vents. That doesn’t exist on Mac, maybe with the M1s but I have not tried one yet. I’ll see if I can find someone rocking one and do some testing.

No one is going to freely reimburse you for damaged equipment or care about your heat exhaustion unless you make them.

Bet reapplying thermal paste can help. That Chassis is just too thin for a high powered i7 or i9 and i bet apple lets the processor run wide open generating more heat and the heat has nowhere to go. The XMG uses a i7 but its a lower wattage i7 and it doesn't generate as much heat. Thats why very few PCs have issues performing in high heat. Typically Higher powered i7's are in thicker heavier chassis like video game laptops. Or the thinner laptops that has a higher powered processor gets throttled so it will not generate as much heat. Thanks for the video.

I’ve always had good luck with PC and Mac. I’ve had friends with Macs have me to come mix in their studios for there and they had way more problems with their computers than I had. Then they would come to my studio and see me mixing sessions in PT with high track counts on a Toshiba desktop replacement laptop with no problems. And they still criticized me… ( I had a souped up G4 in a rack too ) 🤦🏾‍♂️ I use whatever is working for me especially if the money is coming in… but my friends will almost jump me over this ongoing PC-Mac debate.. 🤦🏾‍♂️ I swear I don’t get it.
