Traxxas Rustler Project - Transmission Rebuild ⚙🔧🔩

- Rebuilding the transmission for the Traxxas Rustler VXL project. I would have to say this really isn't a full rebuild but a bearing swap. Since the pivots for the A arms were worn out I wanted to replace the transmission cases. I had a few cases in storage and pulled them out. To my surprise they were brand new, along with the rear motor guard.

I just meticulously rebuilt a pre-owned ball bearing Rustler tranny with Traxxas Red Marine Grease on every gear sparingly, and its smoother than butter now.
I liked the texture of the marine grease so I am confident it will last quite a long time and won't "harden up" like lithium grease does over time. Wish me luck.
Some petrolium based greases will affect plastic gears. I opt for a silicone based grease for this fact alone. Let us know what grease you used and how it's working for you.
When I’m putting the transmission back together can I just put some regular rc grease on all the gears??
It's recomended white lithium grease, or silicone grease. Regular rc grease will be fine.
I noticed the slipper clutch pads had a broken piece on it is it ok to still use it? I opened up the cover and checked the pads. It's better to replace if one is damaged?
I put it together and sent it.
Yep should replace. Just replaced it. Thanks fir for watching.
@@HootBuilds oh alright I already finished the project and it's good because it's my birthday and wanted to bash my slash vxl in the backyard lol
@ Gamer Cat Great tip here - just like a carbon fiber chassis, its a great idea to super glue the edges of the slipper clutch pads so they hold together with an actual bond and keep the edges from "damage".
Great tip
What Metal gears do you use? First time running on 3s and completely shredding the Transmission and gears haha
These gears were in it when I purchased the car, but I did do a quick google search for (Traxxas Rustler 2wd metal gears) and a plethora of results popped up. Good luck with your search.
Does Traxxas recommend greasing all those different areas?
Probably not, but the silicone and lithium grease really can't harm the plastic gears or the Teflon coated washers/shims. My thought is, as long as the case isn't "packed full" the excess grease has a place to go. If you find documentation from traxxas stating grease points and the amount to use, let us know so we can all be informed about it. Thanks for watching.
@@HootBuilds nahhhh not worth the trouble. I went ahead and loaded it up lol. It's a 3300kv basher on 2s with stock gears. I'm sure it will work just fine for me. I'll let you know if anything bad happens
Where can I find the transmission protector to print on a 3d printer?
I'm unsure where you could find something like that.
What’s the gearing on that
Probably stock, and nothing special
