People are jealous of greatness. Khatia is very much like the great composers of their time: out of the box, risk taking performers, and brilliant. I give her freedom and applaud her sometimes unconventional style. I love it! Brava, Khatia!! 💕🌺💕

I guess that many of the negative comments have a no musical base... - you may should listen to Glenn Gould's piano transcription of Ravel's "La valse". - Then you might get an imagination of what Khatia Buniatishvili is doing! - She's excellent in every way... - perfect technique, style, expression, interpretation, performance and of course she's very beautiful. - But the last attribute unfortunately leads to underrate her musical skills... - Don't look at her beauty, listen to her music, sit back an just enjoy! - And do not compare a interpretation of a wonderful piano transcription with a traditional old fashioned orchestra performance...

For me a good musician is someone who suggests a possibility that is not visible until we listen to their performance. Why do they have to play what all people expect already in their mind? The pianists are not idiots, no one plays to ruin the composer's spirit, just open your mind and see what's inside. "Ravel should be like this" if you say this, that means you believe that the artificial intelligence can be an alternative to the arts someday, because robots can do so well what we expect.

@@lagunagreg4019 ravel is my favorite composer. And as a pianist personally i dont play music to please the people who wrote the music. I do it because i love the music. So if playing it different way pleases, why not play it that way. Classical music isnt some academic spectacle. Its supposed to be enjoyed just like any other type of music.

As a pianist that will stay up for 2 days trying every manner of way to find a pieces inner beauty, this makes sense to me.
Although, I would prefer to rewrite the whole transcription of la valse myself. I personally think this transcription is reduced too much.
It captures La valse from what I see to everyone as a means of showing off what the piano can do not what the music intended.
    Ravel himself stated:
"This dance may seem tragic, like any other emotion... pushed to the extreme. But one should only see in it what the music expresses: an ascending progression of sonority, to which the stage comes along to add light and movement".
"Sergei Diaghilev hearing a two-piano reduction performed by Ravel and Marcelle Meyer, Diaghilev said it was a "masterpiece" but rejected Ravel's work as "not a ballet. It's a portrait of ballet". Ravel, hurt by the comment, ended the relationship. Subsequently, it became a popular concert work..."

Although Ravel said he did not mean for la valse to represent the decaying collapse of the old order (as Europe crashed into World War I) , it’s how so many understand the piece. Some people complain about the speed at which she plays, but to me it makes sense: how better to express headlong overindulgence than the pyrotechnics straining against the limits of her phenomenal technical ability? The fin de siecle interpretation represents an era where objective values were collapsing. We’re not merely watching la valse, we’re watching someone playing la valse.

"... Speaking of flair, Buniatishvili emerged from the wings in a shiny
silver dress, which said “Vegas.” The woman behind me remarked to the
man she was with, “You don’t need to hear the music”-in other words,
looking was enough. ... But, again, she was extreme. She slapped at the
keyboard vulgarly. At one point, she stood up, the better to pound the
keyboard. Her playing hurt my ears, ... And she seemed to play heedless
of the public, heedless of pianistic norms, heedless of anything. I
thought, “She’s in her own private Idaho.” ... Afterward, audience
members went to the front of the hall, to take her picture. She beamed.
She will obviously be a “star,” and is probably one already: the dress,
the lionessness, the loudness. I imagine she’ll be known as “Khatia,”
with the “Buniatishvili” on the sidelines."... THE NEW CRITERION
by Jay Nordlinger, New York City
      ... "But
Buniatishvili, who performed in a glittery, bright-red dress, was all
about self-indulgence. Sometimes grotesquely distorted, this was music
reflected in the aural equivalent of funhouse mirrors. One could only
guess that the standing ovations, whoops and bravas came from people not
well acquainted with the pieces." ... THE DALLAS MORNING NEWS
      Scott Cantell
..."No matter how fast she plays, no matter what
the character of the music, everything comes across the same way - the
pianistic equivalent of a society wedding photograph, with edges blurred
and defining human characteristics removed. ... Buniatishvili is
neither careless nor ungifted. She is simply overhyped, immature and
preoccupied with beauty of presentation - a poor example to the legions
of young pianists who aspire to her fame and fortune. At no point did
this recital reveal a shred of the musical temperament we expect of a
scion of Georgian musical tradition." ... THE FINANCIAL TIMES Ltd 2014
