POV: You arrive in Australia with Eos M in hand (stock battery, old ML build) go to the underground Eos M meetup at golden hour by the water with pretty girls dancing around all the bros with their rigged out M's, someone's like "You're the new guy here, that over there's Zeek, better known as MK." "What does MK mean?" "Ha-ha you don't know? M-KING"

The walk before you can run advice is so true. I started with my t3i and ML, immediately trying to record raw. All it did was make me not want to record because I couldn't record for more than 4 seconds max. Ultimately, I grabbed my camera and went outside and just started recording in 1080. It's way better to get out in the world and start moving and improving than to stay glued to youtube. You're going to learn more in the first 20 minutes of shooting than the 2 weeks you spend watching tutorials. Not that learning from UA-cam is bad, it's amazing. But, there needs to be a balance of practice vs consuming tutorial content.

    • @Altcine

Nailed it! I can imagine how the frustration got to you and can kill the initial feelings of excitement.
Then when you notice that a lot of clients are fine with 8bit/10bit you have to start questioning things. I know raw is great but I've been in the position where I'm shooting celebs and they don't care about the camera for their web series...just good light, sound & a clean image.....I'm really starting to look at things differently lately.
Also that was a good example you made about learning via spending time on UA-cam and only real life scenarios can prepare you.
      Thank for the comment 👍🏾👍🏾

Well stated! I started on UA-cam about 14 years ago... with a Olympus TG-1 ( picked-up a cople of Canon's since, a T1i and a Powershot 540HS). Took a break from shooting videos for UA-cam when I moved to Nevada a few years ago. I returned to creating for my UA-cam channel about a year and a half ago. Have been shooting and posting with my cellphone. Going to dust off my old gear and get shooting with them again.

Your words are very wise. I have actually moved "down" to the EOS-M from more expensive DSLRs, because the EOS-M with ML forces you to think and try to understand what is going on. It is a humbling experience, but a very constructive one. I am enjoying it more than any other film tool I have used before. Thank you for all you do.

yo, cheers from Brazil mate! your videos have been really important to me because i'm a freshman in cinema at college, i needed a camera and had basically no money, Zeek showed me Magic Lantern and he's a really cool dude and love his work but I really wanted to see it getting used for real professional shooting, as i might have to do it until i get another camera, so it's great seeing someone showing that it isnt just about making 15 sec clips of "cinematic footage" as some other people here do, you need to go further!

My man! Great video. How much more can you learn before start shooting? Spot on! This was (and to some degree IS) my problem exactly. By the way, my favorite mode is 5k anamorphic frtp. Because it has no aliasing. Even though it's not real 5k I like it anyway. But yeah, 1080p is the most stable mode, however the aliasing is killing me in this mode. I will try to buy a PRO Mist filter because soft lenses can't help with aliasing (I own similar that you mentioned, and a few vintage lenses). Thanks again for the video!

I mean, this picture (especially with a good light ;))... It's just mesmerizing. You need to shell out around 20 times more for a good camera to get similar picture without the compromises of the EOS M and Magic Lantern. Hi Noty,,
The first thing you must realise that magic lantern is not official fw and can have bugs.
That being said, if you learn about it and don't follow the high resolution race then you can have a good experience with it.
I started out with the eosm as my very first camera and don't regret it one bit. It taught me a lot about raw, cinematography and grading raw images and as you can tell I'm still a big fan despite owning quite a few other cams.
The outlay is very cheap so if you don't like it you can easily sell it. Btw which country are you in because $200 seems a bit high unless it comes with a lens?
I would have recommended a bmpcc OG but the prices have gone crazy so there is nothing....NOTHING in the price range of the m that will shoot raw...just know you have to know what you're doing so join the Facebook group if possible.

Oh the uproar you're about to cause 😂. I know we've discussed this already about just shooting and not getting bogged down in the technical aspects. I'm actually thinking we shouldn't share settings and just encouraging shooting video. Emphasis going to story and content instead. Pull people out of the comfy B-roll zone.

😅😅 yes bro....I can imagine some people from the community not liking certain comments and I think my nervousness came across in this video.
I do stand by what I'm saying though, we...the old hats need to build this community more and show how powerful the camera is but it seems like everyone just loves B-roll & settings videos.
I think this is why people tinker then move on without creating at least one meaningful project.

Man I have OG Eos M - it's really a gig for geeks :) It's cool for creative, short clips, but for real life filmmaking it's pretty quirky :) I think the best alternative (and cheap too) is BlackMagic Pocket Cinema Camera - original (1080p) - PRORES recording in camera it's greeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeat.
