I wish I could have been in your class when I was in school. This is so fun! We made bubble wands with knitting needles, cotton string and metal washers. Kids had a blast!
1. 16 Cups Distilled water 2. 1/2 tsp J-lube (mixed with 1 cup distilled water) 3. 4.5oz tube Surgilube (mixed with 1 cup of distilled water) 4. 1/4 cup Glycerine (same as glycerol) 5. 2 cups Dawn Professional dish detergent (dawn ultra concentrated or regular probably works) Let solution sit for a minimum of 24 hours for best results
thank you!!! the magic has begun! Today a friend with 2 kids came and helped me mix the recipe and we immediately began blowing large bubbles right in the living room and kitchen. It was wonderful. We had a problem with the cell phone taking the video. Now we will let the bubble mixture set for a week. Next weekend my husbands birthday..96!!. We will celebrate with giant bubbles. Awesome video!! If you want to save some time with the cotton rope instead of the mop head, here is what I did: I took the cotton rope and put it in a mesh bag, then I threw it in my washer with a tiny amount of soap on a regular cycle. The mesh bag helps contain the string so it wont get tied around your washing machine. The wash cycle and fabric soap "softens" the cotton fibers and if the rope has any coating on it then this will help with that. I took advantage of these hot California summers here and let it dry outside for a whole day. The rope will be stiff, BUT it will now take on MUCH more of the solution once you get started. Saved me having to buy a mop head and saved about 2.5 hours of labor! ALSO, a XXXX t-shirt will make an almost 4' diameter "rope" as well :) I got one at Wal-mart.
@@BealsScience I made a small-ish (top string about 3’ long) tri-string wand today with the cotton mop yarn. I braided the top string and then used a single strand of yarn for the sides. My first wand was made from cotton clothes line with the core removed. Humidity is reasonable today (68%) but temperature was in the mid 80s. When I used the clothesline wand results were okay but not great. Then I used the cotton mop wand. Oh My Goodness, what a game changer! It was fantastic! I can’t wait to make some improved bubble juice. This is so much fun! Thank you!
@@BealsScience There’s more! I had read that having a thicker top string and less thick bottom strings works well. The top string holds more juice and gravity lets it run down to the bottom strings. I used braided mop yarn at the top and single strand for the bottom and that works great. AND making a very long braid is a little difficult, especially when you are by yourself without someone to help hold one of the cards of yarn so I tried crocheting the top string with a simple chain stitch. I did not use a crochet hook, just my fingers. It works great and I find it much easier. You only need one long strand of yarn rather than three. After all, if patents only lasted a max of 2 years then all of the worlds diseases would be gone and all of its problems invented away because we'd all collaborate. (Don't mind me, I watched a documentary called everything is a remix and it reminded me of how impeded we are as a people by patents and copyright. Anyways...... I know that washing machines have a minimum effective temperature where the soap doesn't work as well if the water is too cold. This then tells me that warmth activates something about the soap. I don't know whether there is a cut off point at the top range where more heat is no longer helpful. Please try and let me know puleeeeeaaaaaaass
I absolutely love this. I had a couple of questions. Do you stir the solution when you get ready to use it? and more importantly, If I were going to do something for kids where I could give them a simple inexpensive recipe to take home do you have a recommendation? I really want to get some of the kids in my area involved with projects like this they can do at home and we are planning to travel around with a set up that should allow 20-30 kids to participate at a time. The recipe would be for them to be able to take home with them
Thank you for the kind words! A super simple recipe is to use soap and water. Let them experiment with ratios. They can blow small bubbles with straws so make a simple bubble want with pencils and cotton string.
I like the DIY project. I am wondering if by using thick cotton.absorbent yarn and a very large crochet hook, one could crochet a rope. It sounds a lot easier than taking apart a mop head and then braiding it. If crocheting works and I am not talking about just making a simple chain, but making several rows of single crochet, &/or making very loose stitches, it could be alot less labor intensive. Think I'll try it and see.

Tap water will work. How much it affects the bubble’s ability to hold depends on the contents of the tap water. So it may have an effect but you should still be able to make nice bubbles!
You can still make giant bubbles! Just buy a brand that is not watered down, it should be concentrated. But, do not use commercial dishwasher or industrial soaps, they are so concentrated that they can harm your skin.
Thanks for the recipes, I recently created a giant bubble machine that takes 10 gallons of this formula, the wands for the machine are 1 foot in diameter. I'll be posting a video soon :)
People have reported decent results with other obstetrics lubricants including lubricants used in veterinary medicine but I am not sure what the brands were.
I am not aware of any substitutes but you could try Surgilube - it is a different brand and a slightly different product but it has similar properties.

Dawn professional is more concentrated. Regular dawn will work (I’ve used it before) but you may not get quite as long lasting or large bubbles. But they will still be very big!
Question: so made your guar gum recipe. We had small children so we just used one tomato spike with a circle of fabric and finally one of the kids just held the stick under the solution and opened the circle of cloth and made the biggest bubbles so we all started sticking our hands in. Had great fun. I noticed it was hard to get all the soap off your hands later. I washed and washed my hands until I finally thot I had it all off. A couple of hours later I somehow managed to touch my finger to my tongue and could immediately taste the soap and it was hard to get the taste out of my mouth. My question is: are you using 2 sticks so you don’t have to touch the soap? What’s in dawn platinum anyway? I’ve always wondered why a little dawn in a spray bottle of water would kill wasps so easily. Just wondering your thoughts since I taught my grandchildren this. Thanks!
The soap is super concentrated and the guar gum is a thickening agent. So, the combination makes it really sticky. Ample amounts of warm water should help wash off the soap. The fragrance is very concentrated in the soap so it will persist for a while. All of the ingredients are safe.
I'm curious if any brand of lube would work? such as a popular brand like KY or just a generic brand of personal lubricant jelly?? Im having troubles finding surgilube and Jlube powder. Any help?
You can definitely try KY. I would think it should work but I haven’t tried it. You can also hydrate guar gum - it takes a little for work but makes a good gel too.
I have a question, if I can’t find surgilube locally , can I skip it or is there something else I can sub for it until I can order it online? Also I have dawn dish soap, but again I can’t find ‘pro’ so I got heavy duty. Lol. Will that make a substantial difference? Just a question; it looks like the upper string is shorter in length than the lower string while you are creating the bubbles yet instructions stated 2 strings/ropes 6 foot each. Is it just an illusion?, angle of the camera?
The top part of the string in the loop is left shorter so when you open the bubble wand there will be an opening for the bubble to form. Does that help?
I love this! But when you started making the huge ones at the end, they seemed kind of heavy... I want to make pretty big bubbles that will fly away... I know I've done it before but it's been quite a few years and I honestly don't remember what solution I used but I did make it myself... Any ideas? Many thanks! 🙂
The solution is heavy, if you try the simple recipe I shared, the density of the solution is less and the bubbles will be lighter. Also, the smaller you make the bubbles, the easier it is for the wind to carry them away. I hope that helps!
Distilled water is just H2O. It has been distilled (boiled and the vapor captured to leave behind anything that isn’t H2O). It is available at most grocery stores in the US.
I have a question I have got all the supplies and want to know I'm using 3/8 meter long wood dowls could I use 100% cotton yarn? (I crochet so I have it already) it's not a thick yarn so if I can use it should I double it up? I sure hope you see my comment because That's all I need! I want to make sure I can make bubbles before o show my 5 year old. Also how much yarn should I use in between
Yarn will work and if it is not holding enough solution to make big bubbles you can always braid it. As far as the length? You can make it any length you want! Have fun!

Jlube is a powder that gels when mixed with water. It is commonly used for veterinary work with cows and horses (for insemination or for checking for pregnancy, etc). It can be purchased at a farm and ranch supply store or at some veterinary clinics. So, it might be worth checking those places for a similar product to try. Let me know if you find anything similar.
I tried recipe number two with the Dawn dish soap, water,and J Lube.. but I cut the recipe in half. I left it for 24 hours, but it seems like the lube is not incorporating into the emulsion very well... is this normal?
I made my latest batch with Dawn Platinum because I couldn't get the Professional in time. The Dawn Professional is the most concentrated version of Dawn (outside of their commercial diswashing bulk packaging) so there might be a slight difference for the bubbles, but for my recipe with surgilube and J-Lube, I am confident that the viscosity of both "lubes" will counteract any slight concentration difference in the dish soap.

I try both recipe at home, live in Vancouver, but it work only after 24 hours, after 7 days I found it become less thick and doesnt work, I use the cotton shirt to make the bubble wand too, I don`t know whats wrong with it, is it have some storage condition? Or I did something wrong? But if I did some thing wrong, then should not be work after 24 hours too, right? I really need the recipe for the coming annual year project for my daycare(it might raise my salary)
OB Lubes for animals or humans would work but you would have to experiment a little to make sure the ratio is still the same. Animal OB Lube is a lubricant used for checking cow pregnancy and is available at a lot of farm and ranch supply stores. Walmart pharmacy sometimes carries OB Lube (for humans).
The J lube is the only water based powdered product I tried. Others should work but I can’t speak to how effective they would be. If you try one let me know how it turns out!

@@BealsScience this morning we went to Walmart and Chedraui in Cuernavaca..googling told us both places had aqua distillada nope! and pharmacies neither! They advised us to try hospitals! We opted for a jug of aqua sin sodia and surgilube wasnt available at 3 pharmacies we looked! BUT a google search got it..5 small tubes delivered around June 30th. So I quess we are getting closer!! got the pail, bucket cotton string, sticks, screw eyes! whoa! and then a friend came to see me 2 evenings ago and told me at a childrens party recently he saw hair jel being used *bubbles( I dont know the details of that!! but hair jel is easy to get! grateful and surprised to hear from you! We will post photos!!!

We are able to find J-Lube at a local ranch supply company because it is oftentimes used for lubing the instruments that check for pregnancy in cattle and other animals.
Cool video! I'd like to make giant bubbles but I'm in Thailand and can't get Dawn Soap unless I import it. How do you know which soap will be good are there ingredients you should look for? Also, do you recommend Castille soap? Seems a bit expensive..
I haven’t tried Castile soap but I would love to try it. Any soap will work. The more concentrated the better! If you try it out, let me know how it turns out!
Hi - Too much fun! I made your bubble recipe this morning in anticipation of a grandchild’s visit. 1/3 of your recipe. One gallon, rather than three, and it works great. I’m still smiling at the gigantic bubbles floating above our yard. My grandchildren will love this. But one gallon is way more than I’ll use in six months or even a year. You mentioned that it could mold over time, when stored. Can this bubble juice be frozen to prevent mold? Second question: should the wand rope be rinsed out with clean water and dried between uses? Thanks.
I am happy to hear the video was helpful!I’ve never tried freezing it but let me know how it works if you try it out! I would recommend rinsing and drying the wand in between uses. But I’ve got some wands that have never been cleaned and they still work just fine so either way you will still be able to make great bubbles.
THC 123 Your comment is 10 mo's old, so this info may be too late! But I think what he was saying is that the "other" recipes he tried would mold, but not these, which is part of the reason he liked these recipes. Other recipes tell you to add sugar or corn syrup instead of glycerin or along with the glycerin. And those of course would mold and draw bugs. I've been making these bubbles for decades... Slightly different recipe than his, but never with sugar or corn syrup. He's right about leaving the bubbles for a long time. I have one of those very old very large Tupperware storage containers (maybe 4gal?), that I keep the bubble mixture in. I have kept my bubble mixture in that same container since 1986 lol, no joke! I never rinse it out I just continue to add more bubbles to whatever is already left in there. It stores perfectly, never a problem. And he's absolutely right about being able to make even better bubbles if you wait! I might only use that mixture once a year or once every 2 years, and they still not only come out amazing, but actually better with age! ALSO, one of the best tips EVER lol, in making these bubbles is to do it when the weather is really COOL (like at the beginning of October, or late in the evening in Sept. I took these to my office one time (on the 2nd floor w/a rooftop area that overlooked a street below and made the most gigantic bubbles at night time in the dark with the street lights shining on them. They looked incredible! They were literally longer than the length of the cars, and they stayed as solid bubbles floating down the street for a very long time before they popped! (Didn't interrupt the cars). Hope you had fun with your grandkids. Just a thought, but maybe you should keep the same bubbles in the same bucket, and either make it an annual thing, or literally save them until they're in high school and do it with them again! One last note, I used just small yardstick size sticks, and the cotton was about 2 ft in diameter. If you put just a small metal washer on the bottom cotton cord, it helps a great deal to open the cotton up right away so you don't waste your bubble mixture by over dripping... You need all that bubble mixture on the Cotton so it can make a huge bubble!

I am guessing other ultrasound gels may work. One of the main uses for JLube is by veterinarians using it to check livestock for pregnancy - maybe check livestock supply stores. inching along closer I have DAWN *antibacterial power 1,2L I dont know if the Dawn IUI have will work *and I bought 2 bottles of it **we can always use it for dishes!! My son, a science teacher..arrives here in our mountain town of Tepoztlan, I dont own a car but use a taxi service to get me to larger towns with bigger selections. If you advise me that the bottle of Dawn I bought will not work well and that I should make the time and effort to get a more appropriate Dawn then I will do that quickly my son and his wife arrive July 29th for a week. Today our taxi driver friend brought me lubricante intimo neto 50g..we have not been able to get surgilube will you advise me???
If you can’t get surgilube you can try any personal lubricant. If you aren’t able to find any other brands you can leave it out and it will still make great bubbles. The soap that you have should work as long as it is concentrated (not watered down) the bottle oftentimes says “concentrated”
And i used boiling water to mix ingredients and then let it sit for a night at least. I let mine sit for about 3 days and perfecto. I at first tried everything that i already had in my house...but the jlube is simple and very good for best large lasting bubbles but had to buy that.

I really want to get some of the kids in my area involved with projects like this they can do at home and we are planning to travel around with a set up that should allow 20-30 kids to participate at a time. The recipe would be for them to be able to take home with them

A super simple recipe is to use soap and water. Let them experiment with ratios.
They can blow small bubbles with straws so make a simple bubble want with pencils and cotton string.

I like the DIY project. I am wondering if by using thick cotton.absorbent yarn and a very large crochet hook, one could crochet a rope. It sounds a lot easier than taking apart a mop head and then braiding it. If crocheting works and I am not talking about just making a simple chain, but making several rows of single crochet, &/or making very loose stitches, it could be alot less labor intensive. Think I'll try it and see.

Yes! Any dish soap will work but some work better than others.

Tap water will work. How much it affects the bubble’s ability to hold depends on the contents of the tap water. So it may have an effect but you should still be able to make nice bubbles!

what if I can't get that exact brand of dish soap, how can I figure out which dish soap in my country will be suitable?
You can still make giant bubbles! Just buy a brand that is not watered down, it should be concentrated. But, do not use commercial dishwasher or industrial soaps, they are so concentrated that they can harm your skin.

Can I use gel lubricant? I live outside the US and don’t think I can find dry lubricant… any other suggestions? thank you!
The surgilube is a gel lubricant so I would try whatever is available and use the same amount as shown on the recipe. It might work just fine!

Any alternatives/substitutes for J-lube?
People have reported decent results with other obstetrics lubricants including lubricants used in veterinary medicine but I am not sure what the brands were.

I am not aware of any substitutes but you could try Surgilube - it is a different brand and a slightly different product but it has similar properties.

Dawn professional is more concentrated. Regular dawn will work (I’ve used it before) but you may not get quite as long lasting or large bubbles. But they will still be very big!

Question: so made your guar gum recipe. We had small children so we just used one tomato spike with a circle of fabric and finally one of the kids just held the stick under the solution and opened the circle of cloth and made the biggest bubbles so we all started sticking our hands in. Had great fun. I noticed it was hard to get all the soap off your hands later. I washed and washed my hands until I finally thot I had it all off. A couple of hours later I somehow managed to touch my finger to my tongue and could immediately taste the soap and it was hard to get the taste out of my mouth. My question is: are you using 2 sticks so you don’t have to touch the soap? What’s in dawn platinum anyway? I’ve always wondered why a little dawn in a spray bottle of water would kill wasps so easily. Just wondering your thoughts since I taught my grandchildren this. Thanks!
The soap is super concentrated and the guar gum is a thickening agent. So, the combination makes it really sticky. Ample amounts of warm water should help wash off the soap. The fragrance is very concentrated in the soap so it will persist for a while.

Yes.
It will still work but you may not get the exact same results. But you should still get big bubbles!

You can use tap water but distilled is preferred because it doesn’t have any impurities. But if tap water is all you have then go for it!
I'm curious if any brand of lube would work? such as a popular brand like KY or just a generic brand of personal lubricant jelly?? Im having troubles finding surgilube and Jlube powder. Any help?
You can definitely try KY. I would think it should work but I haven’t tried it. You can also hydrate guar gum - it takes a little for work but makes a good gel too.

Just a question; it looks like the upper string is shorter in length than the lower string while you are creating the bubbles yet instructions stated 2 strings/ropes 6 foot each. Is it just an illusion?, angle of the camera?
The top part of the string in the loop is left shorter so when you open the bubble wand there will be an opening for the bubble to form.

I love this! But when you started making the huge ones at the end, they seemed kind of heavy... I want to make pretty big bubbles that will fly away... I know I've done it before but it's been quite a few years and I honestly don't remember what solution I used but I did make it myself... Any ideas? Many thanks! 🙂
The solution is heavy, if you try the simple recipe I shared, the density of the solution is less and the bubbles will be lighter. Also, the smaller you make the bubbles, the easier it is for the wind to carry them away.

What would be the difference between Distilled water and Filtered water in the recipe?
Distilled water is just H2O. It has been distilled (boiled and the vapor captured to leave behind anything that isn’t H2O). It is available at most grocery stores in the US.
I have a question I have got all the supplies and want to know I'm using 3/8 meter long wood dowls could I use 100% cotton yarn? (I crochet so I have it already) it's not a thick yarn so if I can use it should I double it up? I sure hope you see my comment because That's all I need! Yarn will work and if it is not holding enough solution to make big bubbles you can always braid it. As far as the length? You can make it any length you want! Have fun!

We dont have jlube here in brazil what else would work i did a recipe the glycerin and it's okay and the guar gum recipe is good but not perfect
Jlube is a powder that gels when mixed with water. It is commonly used for veterinary work with cows and horses (for insemination or for checking for pregnancy, etc). It can be purchased at a farm and ranch supply store or at some veterinary clinics. So, it might be worth checking those places for a similar product to try.
Let me know if you find anything similar.
I tried recipe number two with the Dawn dish soap, water,and J Lube.. but I cut the recipe in half. I left it for 24 hours, but it seems like the lube is not incorporating into the emulsion very well... is this normal?
I always mix the Kline powder into small amounts of water so it dissolves because it tends to clump up if it is added to the big bucket.

Any big difference between the Dawn professional and the regular Dawn? Asking bc I can't find the professional version.
I made my latest batch with Dawn Platinum because I couldn't get the Professional in time. The Dawn Professional is the most concentrated version of Dawn (outside of their commercial diswashing bulk packaging) so there might be a slight difference for the bubbles, but for my recipe with surgilube and J-Lube, I am confident that the viscosity of both "lubes" will counteract any slight concentration difference in the dish soap.

If you don’t make them quite as big they will hold together for a long time and will float away!

Any soap will work. Some soaps are more concentrated than others (less water) and the more concentrated soaps seem to work better.
Can you use another kind of lube besides the J Lube?? It’s hard to find & I don’t have a credit card to order online.
OB Lubes for animals or humans would work but you would have to experiment a little to make sure the ratio is still the same. Animal OB Lube is a lubricant used for checking cow pregnancy and is available at a lot of farm and ranch supply stores. Walmart pharmacy sometimes carries OB Lube (for humans).

The J lube is the only water based powdered product I tried. Others should work but I can’t speak to how effective they would be. If you try one let me know how it turns out!

Guar gum may be an acceptable substitute if you are able to find it.
@@BealsScience this morning we went to Walmart and Chedraui in Cuernavaca..googling told us both places had aqua distillada nope! and pharmacies neither! They advised us to try hospitals! We opted for a jug of aqua sin sodia and surgilube wasnt available at 3 pharmacies we looked! BUT a google search got it..5 small tubes delivered around June 30th. So I quess we are getting closer!! got the pail, bucket cotton string, sticks, screw eyes! whoa! and then a friend came to see me 2 evenings ago and told me at a childrens party recently he saw hair jel being used *bubbles( I dont know the details of that!! but hair jel is easy to get! grateful and surprised to hear from you! We will post photos!!!

We are able to find J-Lube at a local ranch supply company because it is oftentimes used for lubing the instruments that check for pregnancy in cattle and other animals.

Hi - Too much fun! I made your bubble recipe this morning in anticipation of a grandchild’s visit. 1/3 of your recipe. One gallon, rather than three, and it works great. I’m still smiling at the gigantic bubbles floating above our yard. My grandchildren will love this. But one gallon is way more than I’ll use in six months or even a year. You mentioned that it could mold over time, when stored. Can this bubble juice be frozen to prevent mold? Second question: should the wand rope be rinsed out with clean water and dried between uses? Thanks.

I would recommend rinsing and drying the wand in between uses. But I’ve got some wands that have never been cleaned and they still work just fine so either way you will still be able to make great bubbles.

Your comment is 10 mo's old, so this info may be too late! But I think what he was saying is that the "other" recipes he tried would mold, but not these, which is part of the reason he liked these recipes. Other recipes tell you to add sugar or corn syrup instead of glycerin or along with the glycerin. And those of course would mold and draw bugs.
I've been making these bubbles for decades... Slightly different recipe than his, but never with sugar or corn syrup. He's right about leaving the bubbles for a long time. I have one of those very old very large Tupperware storage containers (maybe 4gal?), that I keep the bubble mixture in. I have kept my bubble mixture in that same container since 1986 lol, no joke! I never rinse it out I just continue to add more bubbles to whatever is already left in there. It stores perfectly, never a problem. And he's absolutely right about being able to make even better bubbles if you wait! I might only use that mixture once a year or once every 2 years, and they still not only come out amazing, but actually better with age! ALSO, one of the best tips EVER lol, in making these bubbles is to do it when the weather is really COOL (like at the beginning of October, or late in the evening in Sept. I took these to my office one time (on the 2nd floor w/a rooftop area that overlooked a street below and made the most gigantic bubbles at night time in the dark with the street lights shining on them. They looked incredible! They were literally longer than the length of the cars, and they stayed as solid bubbles floating down the street for a very long time before they popped! (Didn't interrupt the cars). Hope you had fun with your grandkids. Just a thought, but maybe you should keep the same bubbles in the same bucket, and either make it an annual thing, or literally save them until they're in high school and do it with them again! One last note, I used just small yardstick size sticks, and the cotton was about 2 ft in diameter. If you put just a small metal washer on the bottom cotton cord, it helps a great deal to open the cotton up right away so you don't waste your bubble mixture by over dripping... You need all that bubble mixture on the Cotton so it can make a huge bubble!

J-Lube is not a brand in New Zealand. Is there a particular chemical or requirement that is only found in that brand to make giant bubbles?
I am guessing other ultrasound gels may work.
One of the main uses for JLube is by veterinarians using it to check livestock for pregnancy - maybe check livestock supply stores.

inching along closer I have DAWN *antibacterial power 1,2L I dont know if the Dawn IUI have will work *and I bought 2 bottles of it **we can always use it for dishes!! My son, a science teacher..arrives here in our mountain town of Tepoztlan, I dont own a car but use a taxi service to get me to larger towns with bigger selections. If you advise me that the bottle of Dawn I bought will not work well and that I should make the time and effort to get a more appropriate Dawn then I will do that quickly my son and his wife arrive July 29th for a week. Today our taxi driver friend brought me lubricante intimo neto 50g..we have not been able to get surgilube will you advise me???
If you can’t get surgilube you can try any personal lubricant. If you aren’t able to find any other brands you can leave it out and it will still make great bubbles.
The soap that you have should work as long as it is concentrated (not watered down) the bottle oftentimes says “concentrated”
And i used boiling water to mix ingredients and then let it sit for a night at least. I let mine sit for about 3 days and perfecto. I at first tried everything that i already had in my house...but the jlube is simple and very good for best large lasting bubbles but had to buy that.
