Thanks for watching everyone! These aircraft are incredibly expensive to maintain so if you can, please consider donating to help support the trust: vulcantothesky.org/donate/ And my detailed tour video is coming so make sure you are subscribed. I'm filming at Duxford, Tolour and Speyer so it might be a bit of a wait, though. :)
Thank you for the inside scoop. I've been a fan and had the privilege of watching a departure close up at Aviano AB in 1982. I was working EOR (end of runway, we were the crew chiefs that pulled the last couple of safety pins just prior to departure for live range fire) and was some 100 meters away during its departure from the Brit area of the base. Something I'll never forget. It was also one of those moments, owing to its size, it looked as if it would fall out of the sky. When compared to our F4d's (Torrejon AB "TJ") and the Italian and German F 104's.
Thanks so much for posting this, Paul. In 1965 and 1966, I was a student at Wilmslow County Grammar School (now Wilmslow High School) in Wilmslow, Cheshire. There was a British Air Force base somewhere near Wilmslow, and I well remember the first time I saw an Avro Vulcan roaring through a turn just to the east of the school. While the other boys went about their usual outdoor school activities, I stood there motionless, gazing up in wonder at the magnificent Vulcan. With a brother-in-law who'd been in the US Air Force and a father who flew all over the world in his work, I'd seen and flown on innumerable military and civilian aircraft, but I'd never before seen anything like the Vulcan. To me, it was inconceivable that a delta-wing airplane could be so large yet so graceful. Your video is the next best thing to experiencing one in person.
Nice to see you at our local airport in Doncaster. We are in a massive fight to re open the airport after it closed 5 months ago. I hope you enjoyed your experience of the Vulcan! She's beautiful and sounds amazing.
Brilliant aircraft such a shame it can't fly no more, such a shame as well with Doncaster airport shutting, I've flown from here quite a few times...so easy to get to and im only about half hour away...please let's battle on to get it up and running again.
Thanks for uploading this video Paul. I live about 3 miles from where the Vulcan was made (and many other iconic aircraft). This is now, sadly closed, and is becoming a large housing estate. There is however the Avro museum, with an example of the cockpit and a full plane in the outside area. Unfortunately you can’t go in the main exhibit. In the 60s I lived near to a military airfield where they were sometimes based so they were a regular sight. Iconic design and brilliant to see in flight. Hopefully they may get this one flying again in the future. Guy Martin did a great documentary on a restoration of this Vulcan some years ago in preparation for its final UK flight.
She looks like she was a real gem of a plane. I cannot wait to see the next video with all the details. Wonderful sounds coming from those engines, too. Very sleek lines too. I am presuming that she was quite a formidable opponent in an air battle too
Me and the hubby often drive to DSA just to glimpse xh558, we were frequent visitors to family days at the hangar she was housed in whilst she was still doing air shows right up to October 2015 ...met Taff and the engineers many times ...great memories👍
In a way it's kind of sad. I can almost hear the ol' girl "Let's go! Come on, get in and let me take you flying!" I'd much rather this than have it as a dead static display. It's nice that's she's being kept up. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for uploading the video, this aircraft should still be flying. As an ex RAF dog handler based at RAF SCampton & Waddington during the Vulcans stationed there I have very fond memories of these fantastic aircraft, it was so sad to see them broken up at Scampton. I grew up below Waddington when the planes were painted white, loved the sound as they took off.
Had the pleasure of seeing Avro Vulcan XH558 flying at the Bournemouth Air Festival and on its Southern leg of its "Farewell Tour" Flypast. Shame it can't fly anymore and I hope they find a new home so it remains preserved in full. Great video!
It's still a wonderful looking aeroplane my grandad ran the station hotel Finningley back in the day and had lots stories about the pilots who used to fly them and how on a scramble the beer bottles would bounce off the shelves
Great job Paul! The Vulcan is so cool and massive! Also when you head home to Australia 🇦🇺 if you are headed home via the USA 🇺🇸 and Detroit MI, let me know if so, I’d be happy to meet up if you go through DTW or any future time if you fly DL or another carrier through Detroit! 😊
Was always great to see her fly at RIAT , Farnborough and other airshows . She will need to find a new home soon as its home airport is to be closed and deactivated very soon . Thanks for sharing Paul .
Growing up in England I remember the Vulcan well, mainly because of that Delta wing and the incredible sound the Vulcan scream l lived in a fairly lightly populated part of the midlands and they could let loose over the moorlands.
Across the pond, here in the US, it’s easy to see why the Vulcan is loved. This is a beautiful aircraft. While I am sure it’s very expensive to keep an airplane of this type flying, how unfortunate that all Vulcans have been retired. Seems to me if some Spitfires and Lancasters are still flying, why not a Vulcan? Circa 2003 I attended an air show featuring US WW II planes. The one which really caught my attention was the B-29, as it was much larger than any warbird there. I asked the pilot how much did it cost to operate “Fifi.” He said probably about $5,000 per hour. The cost has probably tripled since then. Seeing “Fifi” airborne is an unbelievable experience.
Hi Paul super video! I was luckier than the guy in Wilmslow. I schooled in Woodford right next to the aerodrome. Whoah!!! Had about 4 years of these things being our playmates with their titanic sound! In the schoolyard! Great you’re highlighting the plane is still around and needs support. My school was mint!!! 🎉 Paul J
In 1978 I saw one crash into our local garbage dump. It was operating out of Glenview Naval Air Station. Dump was on north side of base. We lived adjoining the west side on small farm outside main gate. I was able to see it on base close up in time leading to crash. Sad day 🙏.
God I love the sound of turbine air shear. Especially as they're warming engines up in steps. "Oh you think that was full power that I just spun up to? Cute."
My favorite aircraft. As Volunteer at the DC Smithsonian Air and Space Museum once the renovation is done I'll be able to see X-15 #1 on regular basis.
Brilliant. They need to be training younger people to do this sort of thing, going forward. I say that as someone pushing 60 myself. So good to see a Vulcan at least with engines running, if not flying. Great effort from all concerned. 👍
Used to see it at DSA ex RAF Finningley sadly the airport closed and she had to move, Last saw her fly home for the last time a number of years ago. When a lad I would bike to watch the V bombers fly.
I know this is a dream but it's too bad the UK didn't keep more airworthy like we do in the states with the B52. But it's good to see one is still kept for static displays and start ups.
Great Video , i had the pleasure of going to one of the early ground runs back in 2016 was worth every penny , such a shame that the Engines will not Run once she is moved
I always like the story of the RAF asking the museum can we borrow that Vulcan back that we just gave you? shortly later it took part of Operation Black Buck in the Falkland's war. What great Swan song mission for those Avro Vulcans before all last remaining Avro Vulcans got retired in 1984
Bless you for this howl! P.S. Pub-quiz time: how many years separated the introduction into service of the RAF's biplane Heyford and the delta-winged Vulcan?
This and the Lightning should be kept in the sky with help from the Government, it would give so many people something to be proud of. I would pay extra tax to keep it flying as would many.
Listening to those engines at one point and I’m thinking her brakes are gonna give way, but nope didn’t happen. A question to all, is the camouflage really effective against an enemy fighter?
XH558 may not be flight worthy today sadly, but thankfully she is kept in taxiable condition! Hopefully one day with support and proper maintenance teams, we will be able to take her back into the air, where she truly belongs.
it would have still been flying for another 3 years right now if it wasnt for bae systems and rolls royce no longer wanting to certify the required maintenance on the engines etc due to liability if anything was to go wrong it was politics that grounded 558 it still had another 8-10 years on the airframe left so no it defo wont fly again as it will never be given another airworthy certificate cause of bae systems and rolls no longer willing to support it. i miss xh558 last year i decided that would be my last big airshow a eurofighter typhoon is like watching paint dry compared to this beauty 😢.
Rich people, do the right thing & get this wonderful aircraft flying again! Surely you can let go of a few £1000 shoes etc? PLEASE! And the press coverage would be huge! Think about it ok

Yes I thoroughly enjoyed it! It's a pity seeing so much infrastructure sitting still.

I love the British bombers they were so far ahead of their time and are still an awesome aircraft today watching all the way from New Jersey USA

What a beautiful jet! I remember, as a boy, watching the Vulcan fly at an airshow at Andersen AFB, Guam back in the 1970s. Gorgeous lines!

WOW brilliant. Thanks Paul

Without doubt the most impressive (and frightening) cold war aircraft; just awesome in flight in every regard.
Agreed
Thank you for sharing ✈❤👍
My pleasure

Awesome bird. Thank you. :)
Just woke up first video I seen on my subscriptions I'm sure my ears weren't happy yet my eyes were tyvm
Good morning!
@PaulStewartAviation good morning lol
Next to the merlin v12 these are my next favorite engines to hear start up and roar
Growing up in England I remember the Vulcan well, mainly because of that Delta wing and the incredible sound the Vulcan scream l lived in a fairly lightly populated part of the midlands and they could let loose over the moorlands.
Hi Paul, thanks for another fantastic video. I hope you were wearing hearing protection during the engine start and run up.

My all time favourite aircraft
Simply Awesome 👌
Thanks for watching
Well filmed
Thanks!
Always loved watching the Vulcan at airshows when I was a kid in the 70/80's
My favorite aircraft. As Volunteer at the DC Smithsonian Air and Space Museum once the renovation is done I'll be able to see X-15 #1 on regular basis.
Yes it’ll be great to see the other x-15 on display again!!

It's a pity than XM607 from Black Buck 1 is still outside, should be under cover. Always been a favourite, big thanks for the video.
She is currently inside getting a new paint job
Wow I thought this great plane was going into an aircraft museum?? Will it fly at displays over the summer now??
Have to love these old V bombers, well I do.
Nice video, thank you.
What is written inside the bomb bay doors? 11:00
Those are the names of donors who supported the trust while she could still be flown.
Bless you for this howl!
P.S. Pub-quiz time: how many years separated the introduction into service of the RAF's biplane Heyford and the delta-winged Vulcan?
23years? I based this on when they entered service. Do I get a free pint now?
This and the Lightning should be kept in the sky with help from the Government, it would give so many people something to be proud of. I would pay extra tax to keep it flying as would many.
PAUL, YOU CAME TO ENGLAND AND DIDN’T COME TO MY HOUSE FOR TEA???
We could have talked about planes for a long time man!!!
Haha next time!
Such a great vid! Did they refit digital HSIs in the cockpit? What a shame she can’t fly anymore.
a sad end to a amazing aircraft i will never forget seeing this at the bournemouth air festival on the final time
@@judythomas2939 you lived in a good time then
Great Catch
Listening to those engines at one point and I’m thinking her brakes are gonna give way, but nope didn’t happen.

Would this be leading up to a short ferry flight to her new home??

Whats with the Aircraft in the background that looks like it has a collapsed landing gear?
My guest is it's used for Fire Rescue training
It crash landed in 2011 and was never recovered
Are any Vulcan still flying and how many are grounded
All grounded, 3 do engine runs
So no flyers at all what a shame
Such a shame the old bird will never fly again. She sounds like she wants to 😢
It is sad to reflect on the fact that the British no longer possess the intellectual and financial capital to build aircraft on this scale again.
Is it this the bird that had a brake failure and over ran the taxiway last year?
No
Pity they can't get government to help keep them flying
Too busy paying of a committee to decide who has been offended
No suite for you here 🤣
This one will end up in Ukraine as thing are turning out there.
The Best of British..
