    I watched the video where she explains why she quit the hobby, and wanted to give some advice to prospective goldfish keepers based on the mistakes made in this video. If you want to keep fancy goldfish, the most important things to prevent them from getting sick are to have a properly sized tank and adequate filtration. In this video, the tanks are heavily overstocked, meaning the fish produce far too much waste for the system to handle. Fish waste creates ammonia, which is toxic to fish and can weaken their immune systems even in small amounts. For fancy goldfish like these, the smallest accepted minimum tank size is 20 gallons for your first fish plus 10 gallons for each additional fish. And that's maximum stocking, you'd have to do a lot of work to keep the water safe over time. We're talking huge water changes at least once a week, maybe even multiple times a week.
    Once you have the right sized tank, your filtration needs to be up to the task of managing that much water. If you're using hang on back filters or sponge filters, the total turnover rate (gallons cycled through your filters every hour) needs to be at least 10x the volume of water in your tank. For cannister filters, which have much more media, a good turnover rate is between 5x and 6x your tank volume per hour.
    In order to keep the 8 total goldfish that this person has healthy, the bare minimum tank size is 90 gallons. The minimum turnover rate for the kind of filtration being used is 900 gallons per hour. Finally, water changes of 75% or greater would have to be done at least once a week. They takeaway here is that fancy goldfish are not beginner friendly, and their setups can be very expensive. If you want to keep fish, there are lots of equally beautiful and easier to keep fish in the hobby. Please think about the wellbeing of your fish, and your own emotional wellbeing, by doing your research before you get them. You'll have a much more positive experience, and your fish will thank you!

      @@jasbelial3943 Everything was she said are myths. "the smallest accepted minimum tank size is 20 gallons for your first fish plus 10 gallons for each additional fish". This tip come from victorian era when fishes are keeping in aquarium without filter or scientist don't yet really understand the role of plants, oxygen and fish. Actually, No scientific studies in aquaculture say that and there exist very few scientific studies about ornemental fishes's behavior and the density of stocking (just go to Google scholar to read them). Depend of the species, high density can affect or can not affect the growing rate and survival of fishes (big fish vs small fish). If you have a good filtration, you can add many fish in tank without problems (just work your logic). In the case of goldfish, a study show that 12 goldfish in a 50 liters tank don't have their survival or growing affected by stocking rate. The most old goldfish recorded (25,30 and 45 years old) in the world have all common point: they live in a small tank and are heathly (that is understood by Chinese who raise goldfishes 1000 years ago). More you change the water frequently, more your fish become sick. Because you remove all microorganisms, bacteria, hormons of your fish, etc which are beneficial for the ecosystem already well-etablished. Just add new water when evaporation. That all. Water change only (maximum 20%) in case of fish disease and water parameter problem. keeping fishes is more easy than you think. There is a lot of misconception about them.

    Commenting on her "Asian tank cultures... Overstocking is quite common..." statement for novel/aspiring fishkeepers. What she says about overstocking is in part true. However, what she does not say is that 'those' fish keepers use HUGE sumps for filtration. In addition to large sumps for filtration, 'those' fish keepers and breeders have HUGE ponds to keep their fish in. Additionally, those overstocked systems (and the overstocking that you see in a fish store) are designed with continuous water change systems. Depending on setup, all the water in those overstocked tanks is turned over and replaced every 1-3 days. That is, in order to have the overstocking that she has ...had, you have to have an overall large volume of highly filtered and fresh water. So, unless you are one of 'those' types of fishkeepers/breeders, do not do what she did. Or, like her, you will have fancy expensive de@d fish.

    To make it easier on yourself, you should’ve spent more money on a large tank (60 gallons or so) rather than spending it on heinously overstocking the tanks. I don’t know how 6 fancy goldfish could live in 20g. I wouldn’t even put one in there

    • @francesco810
      @francesco810 2 роки тому +5

      sorry i don’t mean to be rude, but how to raise a pet has nothing to do with culture. 40 gallons is the bare minimum for 2 goldfish. you cannot stick 4/5 of them in a 20 gallons tank. if you want to keep them you need to make your research and find the best way to keep them healthy and happy. if you’re not able to provide them a good life don’t use them just for aesthetic

    • @inspiregaia
      @inspiregaia 2 роки тому +2

      @@francesco810 the things fishes need to thrive is space to swim,a good diet, and clean water and you can do the first two easily and fancies can swim nicely in a 20 gallon(2-4fishes) and the final part can be done with a nice filtratation system with 60% - 80% water changes every week( good tip: if you increase stocking increase everything else) and don’t blindly follow rules

    • @francesco810
      @francesco810 2 роки тому +1

      @@inspiregaia the general consensus for goldfish is 30 gallons + 10 gallons for each additional fish, so i really don’t see how you think 20 gallons is enough for 4 goldfish. they may have enough space now but goldfish grow really big so either she will have to buy a new tank or they’ll stop growing from ammonia poisoning, which is definitely not ideal
