Randomly stumbled upon this searching for a hot dog cast in resin, but was mesmerized and watched the whole thing. Looks amazing! Makes me wish I had access to a lathe!
Thanks Michael, but my wife has already scarfed it up. It has an LED votive candle in it. Looks great. I think I will get a good return on my investment during next year's art show season.
What I don't understand is this? All the resin is poured over the outside of the wood and over the top. After you shape the outside of the project (burls) what is happening to the inside. Does the pressure pot force resin down through the cracks into the inside? After hollowing out this thing what do you do to finish the inside? Isn't there going to be pockets of resin and real rough wood because of its natural cracks and voids.
Most of what I make and sell at Art Shows are 12 inches in diameter. The average price for one of my art bowls is $300. Hence the 5 gal. CA Pot. Good investment.
Beautiful work. Can you explain why you pre-treat the wood bowl blank with dewaxed Shellac and then the epoxy brushed on prior to the soaking in resin within the pressure pot? Specifically interested in the difference if you just skipped the shellac and epoxy brushing . Thanks for your excellent instructions. I am going to try my first epoxy/wood bowl as soon as supplies are shipped
@Noreen Debrot Thanks for your question. This was one of my first pieces with epoxy resin. I had heard about some porous woods giving off air when they were curing, gassing. I always use shellac or lacquer as a sanding sealer anyway. I was experimenting with the brushed on epoxy prior to pressurizing to see if it would help stop gassing. As it turns out I don't need to do that as the pressure in the POT stops the gassing. I don't do those steps any longer.
Hi I am new to your UA-cam channel you are doing some amazing work. I am new to wood turning as well or at least this type, I have made some very very large finials for house I was restoring a few years ago , as they went on the gable ends and stood about 3 foot above the roofline, they were approximately 5 1/2 feet in height as the fascia board on the gable end was jointed into it and it had a finial at the bottom of it as well. I am retired English gentleman living in France been trying to buy some tools as some bits and pieces to start returning in a smaller scale, more as a hobby just so I can Get some pocket money I hope, but as you say the tools and equipment and the resin is very expensive. Keep up the good work BSafe as they say facemask and head shield on. Phil from the Moulin in France
@philip vale Hello Philip. So nice to hear from you all of the way from France. I started out turning small bowls and lidded boxes which I sold at farmers markets. I still do that. It is a great way to finance my hobby. It also keeps me busy and occupies my mind which is very important when retired. Good luck to you and keep in touch. Always thinking safety.
Did the Alumalite actually cost $1000? Just rhetorical? I didn't think it was that expensive. Great pot. If it doesn't sell just add it to your personal collection or gift it to a special person. Thanks for sharing video.
Just FYI, I discovered after purchasing two gallons of Amazing Clear Cast, the weight of the resin/hardener is not the same. My gallon jugs were filled exactly to the same level but when I put them on my digital scales the resin was much heavier. After some calculations, I found the ratio to be about 100/83.. I suggest you get an app called "Resin Calculator" and edit the "Ratio by Weight" to 100/83. EDIT: BTW, this will keep you from running out of hardener before you run out of resin.
@Bob Silverman No it was not dry. Almost 3 years since cutting. Air dried in shop. Cleaned outside really well, then heavy coat of shellac, then sealed with heavy coat of epoxy resin. No gassing, no bubbles, no cracks. This will be my go to method for my big burl turnings.
Not too shabby for a first run at doing the combination. To save money, we buy the resin at Michael’s on their discount coupons. They have it in two sizes.
Roger Dale Scott And the coupons are available online. You may have to bring them up on the smart phone or tablet before going into the store if the store does not have reception.
Roger Dale Scott They currently have a 20% off all regular price purchases through Aug 1. If you sign up, you can get paper or email coupons sent to you. We usually wait until the coupon is 40 or 50% off one item. But you can re-use it.
Actual woodturning starts at 18:00
Simply Beautiful!! Nice job and thanks for explaining things so thoroughly! Not every epoxy resin turner does.
Thank you so much Lynn. I appreciate your comment and thanks for watching.

Use mold release to make your piece come out easier
Thanks for the tip!
HB pressure pot is a little smaller but only 100 bucks. I really enjoy resin/wood hybrid turning. nice job on your bowl
HF harbor freight not HB my bad

Hey Edwin thanks for watching and commenting. The breakdown of everything I bought to make this first piece is in the description. Check it out.

@rstone7727 Thanks for the info I will take your advice and get the app. 😀
Was the burl dry when you started. Like 0-5% or did you just seal it with resin first?

Hello don't trust me research it but running your lathe at slow speed burns it out eventually
Thanks for the tip.

Thank you Valerie. I will be sure to check that out for my next turning.

@@valeriehenschel1590 How much off are the coupons? I went to their web site to look. Very confusing.

nick zimmeti on here does a lot of wood and resin stuff and sells it for big money on etsy... maybe go look around his page ...
@lisa Ayers Thanks for the tip and for watching. I went and looked at his web site.
Considering you got grant money to buy everything, you are not out anything.
You can sell those like hotcakes. Great job & a fabulous looking piece!
Thanks for watching. I'm already working on 4 more pieces. Watch for the videos.
Awesome job but I would sell it for 150.00 myself. Not worth 1000 to me brotha
