“This number goes so fast, so relentlessly that it sounds as though it had been speeded up by the recording engineers - which some recorded record makers have not been above doing from time to time. But this is the way the band played Casa Loma Stomp. ‘It was never intended for it to be played so fast,’ explains Larry Wagner, who was an arranger for the band in the 1930s. ‘Gene Gifford wrote it as a medium-tempo tune. But the band got to playing it faster and faster. The kids used to ask for it and stand around the bandstand listening to it - it was too fast to dance to. It became a real flag-waver though Gene never really liked it that way.’
Stomp was one of the numbers that, played on the early coast-to-coast radio broadcasts, brought the band its early fame. Part of the excitement of listening came from wondering whether the band would really be able to keep up the pace without losing balance or breath. But the sidemen were all confident - the trombone tossing off smooth slurs, the tenor sax yelping happily, the trumpet blowing clear and sharp, the clarinet jumping freely - and the ensemble, at the end, spinning one riff after another without ever easing up.
It is easy, listening to Casa Loma Stomp, to be patronizing and to smile at the technique the way you do at old movies. But there is nothing to apologize for. In the sure-handed skill of the soloists and the driving discipline of the ensemble, you can clearly hear - in this old 1930 number - the sound and the excitement of the dawning Swing Era.”
- Joseph Kastner (1971 Time Inc.)
Best review I've ever read for the Casa Loma ork.
Early rumblings of the Swing era❤
My foot was bouncing along with the tenor sax players 😂😅!
Замечательная запись!
An eerily apropos embodiment of the Machine Age esthetic in sound, and a kinesthetic, synesthetic musical experience.
It's 1931 and this is your rock and roll fun...'nuff said
It's Hot Jazz in this case. And boy is it the greatest or what.
Always the oldest song in a jukebox that was occasionally rented for parties where I used to work.
Where did you work ? Was it in the Toronto area ?
@@ericcanadiangoldboygray4111 No, nowhere near there

Thanks for posting Professor. I believe I've heard all the other versions, but never this one. This intro is not included in the subsequent versions.
The intro is included in the stock arrangement, which we used to play. Harry Roy used ithe stock for his recording, featuring his piano duettists in the intro. ua-cam.com/video/W8jUjoaHGeE/v-deo.html
