For me the most awesome thing to learn was all notes in Em/GM using 3 notes per string and next re-using 2 of the last notes on every string as 2 of the first and then adding one new note. When all that was learned it became possible to improvise endlessly everywhere on the neck in key. And changing key is the same shapes but moved up or down the neck.
@@aaronanytime8897 It works on any key, the shapes are the same just on different places depending on what key. I just started with Em/GM because it looked easiest for me to learn. And remember that you only really need to learn the notes up to the 12th fret to know all of it since it is the same notes as open strings, so the shapes just repeat after the 12th fret.
@@aaronanytime8897 Also remember that the first shape starts with open strings on the first 4 strings but not on the b and the high e string. Because if you just go by the fretted notes and do the 3 first notes per string that is marked out, the shapes will get messed up and will become much harder to memorize and it will also sound bad. So one open string note and two fretted notes per string on the first 4 strings then 3 fretted notes per string on the last 2 strings. And then 3 fretted notes per string on all other shapes after.
Thank you for what you are doing. I picked up guitar long before the internet was around. I had very little guidance. I never gave up. I feel like I should be a lot better than I currently am considering how long I've been playing. You and people like you have awakened the excitement that I have not felt in years.
Amazing video lesson! I never thought that theory can be taught in under 14 minutes. If only I had a teacher like you Bernth back in the day! I wouldn't have struggled to learn music theory, I've learned it the hard way by learning how to play piano. Thanks for changing My life!
I really enjoyed this added perspective of adding notes the to minor pentatonic scale, and the visual representation of the modes made it make so much more sense! Thanks!
Appreciate all you do on this channel Bernth. You give so much insight and knowledge for free and inspired me a couple months ago to play guitar again. I've kept a daily practice routine and love playing along with many of your videos daily. Still haven't figured out the right way to position my fretting hand so I don't hurt my wrist and arm after long practice sessions though ha. Keep up the great work, and I hope all is well. Almost forgot.... Musiktheory
Danke Schön Bernth! This content right here is why I'm subscribed to your channel and on Patreon for 2 years now... and why for 3 of the 4 days I was at Rockville Daytona (Metallica x2, Anthrax, Disturbed, Lamb of God, Gwar, Atreyu, Mastodon, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Mudvayne and _many_ more) I wore my "Shred Every Day" and "Cosmic Shredder" shirts! 🤘🏻 After so many years when I was younger, just learning to play by tabs and never knowing what the hell I was actually playing, your Patreon content and this channel have completely changed my understanding of the fretboard and what I can do with it. Vielen Tausend Danke!
Thanks Bernth. I just joined the patreon about a month ago and have been doing the 30 day tapping, legato, and alternate picking routine and have doubled my speed with all those techniques. You really know how to explain things where I can understand. Thank you so much!
Holy cow! I've been trying to play Trick #1 for over half an hour and still can't play it fluidly at any speed at all :D Love all your content! Been practicing about 2-3 hours today with the courses from your Patreon and I had a lot of fun with them for the last 2 Months! I'm progressing slowly but I can feel how my overall technique is already so much better now! Thanks, Bernth, for always killing it with your lessons!
Hey Bernth, I just discovered your channel (after dodging the ad for a while though) and i am very happy i finally took the time to watch some videos of yours and must say, you have a great way of explaning things. I play since i was 16 (now 46) but tbh i never had any training whatsoever, i just learned by ear and got pretty good at it, after an almost 10 years pause, i wanted to dive in all the theory i was missing in my starting days and tried some online courses, but with your videos i immediately had some eye opening effects, so patreon is guaranteed! :) Thanks and Cheers to Austria from France! :) Chris
bernth, the more videos i watch, the more i realize i have so. much. to learn. you have so many videos, and im sure they all go into good explanation and such, but i dont even know where to begin lol. do you have some kind of "order" to watch the videos in?
Wow I just discovered you from Ola's FAQ and this video will just complitely change my way of practicing ! I loved the 3 nps approach. I was wondering how to get into modes and thats seems like the perfect introduction. I also never thought about the minor pentatonic that was, so I will try that for sure. Thanks for that, this channel is such a good discovery for me :)
I was and still am to a point disadvantaged beause i learned the 3NPS system and just put it on a metronome. Those shapes def helped me understand the tonal sound of a key. And my alternate picking got INSANLEY better. But sadly the theory part was def lost. I had to dedicate alot of time to learning the thoery behind these modes.
Hello sir. I have been playing for 35 years. I like jazz fusion, classic rock and some shred/metal, although I cannot play fast. I feel like I have not improved my improv much in the last 20 years. When I get a chance to solo, I always fall back to the 2NPS pentatonic and Jimmy Page licks. I understand all of the tricks you explained but I do not know how to practice them so that new ideas and techniques will show up in my solos. I own MANY books and videos and I have learned a lot but it does not reach my fingers. Please tell me if you have any advice. Thank you for your videos and you have a new subscriber!
It sounds like you are making it into a mechanical science when it’s an art. Stop thinking and just play, music doesn’t come from the analytical mind it comes from the soul, that’s where you’d be hung up
@@connorbalisky1827 I think you are trying to help but I have been “just playing” for 20 years and it is not working. Can you be more specific? One thing I have started to do is learn every melody I can by ear. It is helping me get away from the boxes. Thank you for the reply.
What works for me is not getting hung up on scales or theory, those things are there to point beginners in the right direction but they are not necessary at all, they end up limiting people. What I really recommend is jamming on psychedelics, lsd in particular. All the legends such as jimmy page did so much lsd. That stuff helps greatly with creativity, we can get stuck in ruts lsd will break you out of the mental habits you’ve formed over years. And maybe you are being too hard on yourself and need to be more of a jackass on the 6 strings. Hope that helps.
Just wanted to say - if you're not a member of his patreon you should be. There's a wealth of information there and unlike most channels you don't have to be at the top tier to access it. I've barely scratched the surface and have gotten more than my money's worth. Also musiktheory
I’d love if someone can explain trick #5, the modes, with a little more detail. The second position of the C major 3nps scale, that has D as starting note is the exact same scale as D Dorian? Are they just different names for the same scale?
@BERNTH I’m new here and a pretty new guitarist. Wondering where is a good starting point on your videos? Love the content but with so many different things, I find it difficult to know where to start
Hey BERNTH you said in the ending of this video, that you hoped our brains didn't hurt after all of your incredible information........ my brain is fine, dude! However I have an eyes-ache because of watching all of your videos... could you give an advice to keep my pupils healthy?
I only play using the caged system, think I should learn the 3 notes per string scales now, I never did because it's going to take a lot of time to learn 7 new shapes
My brain hurts... :) I understand and can follow what you are saying, but I have to take a minute of two to lay down when or where in the fretboard is the note to be able to follow the sequence.
I’m a beginner. Been playing for a month now. I understand basically none of this. My question is, am I an idiot and his should this be making sense to me this early, or is this not really meant for beginners with no music theory knowledge?
Are there musical notes that can attract evil spirits I found a song that might have been writing by the devil I think it sounds beautiful so I started playing it on my guitar a few minutes after playing it I felt some electro magnetic engine around me and I even got chill bumps basic signs of a spirit and my notebook that I wrote the tabs in flew off my desk on to the floor I tried to debunk how it flew off my desk but couldn't find any explanation so do I play it anyway how dangerous is it to piss off the devil
