This is the SeeStar S50. The portable smart telescope that can do it all.
It finds, it tracks, it captures, it stacks, and guess what, the pictures it takes are actually pretty good.
Thank you to Agena Astro for sending me a production model S50 for testing and review.

It's still above what I can afford right now but I really appreciate what this company has done to bring this hobby to a level that is more affordable with lower learning curve. Maybe next year! Thanks for this review :D
It's mildly amusing how many people this thing seems to annoy simply because it exists. 😂
It's unbelievable the gatekeeper. The gear was bad when I started so it should be for noobs.
@@rwentfordable anyone who is genuinely interested in Astronomy should learn to use a proper telescope, read star charts, plate solve and understand the night sky ect it's way more meaningless and rewarding. Using a robot to take pictures for you doesn't make you an Astronomer/Astro Imager so deal with it and stop trying to taint one the very few things humanity now has left that actually requires passionate commitment and a degree of intellectual capacity to be part of. If robots and instant gratification are your thing go ahead but it doesn't make me a gate keeper.

It's awesome to see these companies make astrophotography accessible to people that don't want to buy $3,000 mounts.

selling my 2k rig and buying one of these. messing with focus. messing with polar alignment. messing with guidescope position. programming nina, columniation, messing with on and on. no. im done. the photos even on my eq mount will only be slightly not as good. its just not worth the hassle or money. it also does daytime photography and soon will do mosaics.
@@jasonpierce4518 right arm!
Do you think this is good for a Beto
Wouldn't mind seeing you do a proper review. This video just feels like an advert.
I have all sorts of equipment and, due to getting older, had planned to use my C6 and lightweight EQ3 mount as my old age gear. This has supplanted that. I found the wifi range excellent as I could pick it up anywhere in my house including the basement when the Seestar was in the front yard. It finds the sun on its own quicker than I could. Now I can quickly and easily follow sunspots. Image quality surprising. Updates like the planetary and comet mode keep coming. Great review Trevor.
I have an avx mount and a svbony sv48p
You can also use the station mode to hook seestar to your home wifi network. Then, it'd be reachable wherever you have your wifi signal.
The Seestar is amazing, I’ve owned one for a week and already finished a goal to image every Messier open cluster I can reasonably get from my location, it’s an absolute gem
Possible to see your captures?
@@ejicon3099 idk how I’d get them on UA-cam but I’ll figure out something. Just for an idea, I’ve imaged M45, M34, M35, M36, M37, M38, M52, and M103. Plus the double cluster
i think you sold me out, ive been wanting to get into astrophotography for ages. i think for a beginner this will be perfect for me
I recently tried shooting my first deep sky objects with just the camera and lens I had since I didn't want to spend 1k minimum in getting a telescope + mount combo and honestly I am seriously considering buying the Seestar instead after watching a few videos about it.
I got mine a few months ago and I'm one messier object from getting all 110, plus only 4 Caldwell objects away from getting everyone from 1 to 90. 91 to 110 I can't see because of my latitude.
I was at a local park this morning with some of my buddies from the Astronomy club and we wanted to take a look at some of the solar activity. I have a Celestron 8 inch refractor and people are in all when they see the size of it and all of the attachments, and so on and so forth, my buddy brought out his Seestar , and I am so envious. It’s unbelievable.
Believe in yourself
Понимаю вас😅
About 2 years ago I found your channel, and you made me fall in love with astrophotography and last month I got the Seestar s50, its amazing for a noob to the hobbie.
Great content and thanks for introducing me to Astrophotography.
Привет, а можно с вами связаться. Я просто тоже хочу купить такой телескоп😅
Seestar S50 is gonna be my first ever optical camera purchase. I can't wait.
I think for me something like seestar would make me feel like im not the one taking the images simply because i just put it down and its ready and i dont actually have to do anything myself so im thinking ¨Am i actually the one taking the image¨ when comparing to using a skywatcher 2i which i have to manually find the target with and everything so it feels like im the one actually doing so mething but this is still really really cool :D
The best way to use this scope is to set it up, choose the target and let it to do its work before you set your main scope. It takes 5 mins max from the start to the capturing process, including connecting to home wifi and using in station mode. Then you spend time on the main rig and if something with the main rig doesn't go as planned, you still have an image, although lower quality.
Always felt astrophotography is out my budget having to need a good tripod, telephoto lens and a tracker to just get started
This looks a great entry point into the hobby!
I got the Seestar for outreach, EAA and camping trips. It’s heaps of fun, very user friendly, and light weight. For the price it’s a great little unit! 😊
I was on the fence, but after your review, I purchased (with your link!). I just bought a new setup (RedCat 51, ASI533, AM5, etc) and haven't used it yet. It's complicated, intimidating, and just a little scary. I think the S50 will be a good step. I can see myself using the S50 for some targets and then use that as inspiration for the larger setup and better light. Love your channel!
Welcome to the club! You might want to get the asi air as well to control the am5 mount but it's awesome seeing new people get into this hobby. Sounds like you've got a better setup than what I have right now
I just did the exact same thing lol! Figured while I learnt advanced setup I’ll let the Seestar do it thing. Then I won’t feel bad lol. Also my wife can use it
@@jeroexx I got the ASI Air, the EAF, and a WO UniGuide 50, and ASI120 for that. I went a little high end, and it's sad cuz it's just sitting here. Ordering and buying everything was the easy part, now I have to get it all assembled and get first light🤞🏻
Show as planets images please
I have a CAT51 set up that I use with a 533 colour or a 183 mono camera and I'm very happy with it. I don't have a SeeStar but having seen the results that people are getting I will probably get one next year for use as a travel scope.
Back to your RedCat, have you also got an ASIAir to control everything? I've just started using the mini to control my DSLR set up and it has to be the easiest thing I've ever used. The only drawback with it is you can only use ZWO astronomy cameras and software.
What if it’s not taking pictures, it’s just producing a picture on its memory like Samsung phones does with its moon shots.
I set up my regular rig (Eq6R+ 6" Newt) and tried imaging. Clouds roll in as usual.
Waited an hour, clouds just won't leave.
Broke down the gear; scope goes inside, cover goes back on the mount.
30 minutes later- as usual with my luck - the star come out, clear skies.
I had desire to do the whole ceremony again with the Newt and cables.
I took the Seestar out, aimed at Rosette Nebula, started imaging.
The whole procedure took about 5 minutes, 3 minutes of it just me messing with the tripod.
Is it gonna be good as my big scope? Nope! I know that, but why the heck not image if I can get it running in 5 minutes, right?
Its a cool tech piece for sure, but I still oddly love piecing my rig together. Its more satisfaction in end for me.
This thing is the future of AP, I just ordered one, just checking out the Cloudy Nights reviews on this thing is amazing for $500 bucks, seems to really perform good at dark sky sites, I can really dig the fact I can use this thing from comfort of my bedroom, set it up on the my roof, easy to conceal around the house, makes astronomy fun again, The tedious task of dragging around my heavy EQ mount, with large scope gets to be a drag, I cant wait till ZWO comes out with the S200 super duper model, with a 12MP camera, I will sell all my other equipment., nah, I will keep my Celestron Edge 8, ES 127mm Apo, Meade 80mm triplet and 10" Schmidt Cassegrain. 😃
When they release a Seestar 100 with 4/3 rd camera and possibly over a EQ mount, it will be game over for legacy big rigs!
I feel like non believers who think these images are fake would think any image is real if theres evidence of light field rotation, a tree blocking a messier target even if it catches it (I have had this occur of course with many disapproved stacks.)
Plus those think its fake why doesnt it look like the hubble internet images you see then, if they are fake or AI generated then why is there a tree branch obscurring the target or the stack failed and thrown away?
I just got my seestar yesterday and I am amazed. This is really a piece of art. So much Astro Gear in one small pack. It is ridiculously easy to use. I cannot wait when they to come out with a bigger aperture. I believe they are testing the water for the next generation of Astrographs, and I believe it's AMAZING.
Do you believe in that? This is a scum system!
I'm going to pick up one in a few weeks, cannot wait to try it.

Hi Trevor, who is Jamie ?😢😢
Dog i think
@@saadlulw4409 Dogs name is Rudy
What happened to Jamie???
Absolutely love my SeeStar, so great just to stick outside and be imaging in minutes… and the regular software updates are exciting too!
Did he just say control it via a wifi connection? So what happens when I am not close to WiFi?
It is a wifi direct connection between the telescope and your phone. The telescope provides a Wifi connection and your smartphone logs in there. You just need to be within range of the Seestar.
Like to see a slightly bigger 80mm version with even more quality added, i would pay double for it.
Hey buddy, good video! But who is Jamie? I also don't see your dog in the videos anymore. Hope he/she is doing well.
As a "intermediate" astrophotographer i love that this exists....
"regular" astrophography is too complex and requires thousands of hours of learning and research to do "right"
Im feel lucky order it from 1st batch pre order only cost about 299👍
I mean, is it a telescope? I guess so.
Does it have a camera? Sure...
Can it take photos? Yes it can!
Can it stack? Of course!
Does it actually give you all the individual frames so you can stack yourself? Bingo!
So can someone explain to me, how this is not considered as "real" astrophotography?
Its mainly coming from the people with 5-10k$+ gear that want to keep astrophotography for themselves, and be that "cool" person with nice backyard space shots. But with this cheap setup, anyone can take photos of space objects, od course not really on real par with true 10k+$ gear, but its still very good for amateurs and beginners. So I do find it funny how a very complex and expensive hobby was "dumbed down" for almost everyone with 500$ and a smartphone to try, while some of the "elites" want to completely dismiss it.
The gatekeeping for astrophotography is insane. ''the gear in my day was overpriced and crap so it should be for everyone else'. 😂
I feel like im cheating when i use my SEESTAR.......its literally is ready to go in minutes and automatically aligns.....LOVE IT..!!!
I see this was dedicated to Jamie. Can I ask who is Jamie ?
I just gotta giggle at @2:09 with the app improperly labeling the moon phase. It would be correct for a southern hemisphere view but the location is Canada and the image of the moon is from the northern perspective.
FINALLY ASTROBACKYARD SEESTAR REVIEW
I think these products get a little too much hate. When i started i would died for an Orion image like that :D Very nicely priced as well.
What a great little system! Thank you for highlighting this scope.
Amazing to get all that's included for $500 US
It is small enough for me to put on a Window bench at an appartement complex. No struggle with polar alignment. It uses an internal compass.
I got my Seestar couple weeks back and honestly I’m impressed by its quality and functionality
Можно с вами дружить? Я тоже хочу купить такой телескоп😅
Have you worked with the Dwarf II? Forgive me if it’s mentioned in the video, my internet is poor and can’t watch at the moment
I'm really interested in this camera/telescope. I live in rural Maine, and my crappy Blink camera has been picking up a lot of UFO and paranormal activity. Before investing in a $2500 infared DSLR I thought I try something moderately priced like this ~ $500. I am def about to get this! Does this take videos?
Just got mine the other day a big tip for anyone wanting the most out of this and wants the best Quality image definitely save each individual exposure and stack them on pc and go through post processing.
Great but I need to see the planets also
Great review Trevor. Your reaction as Andromeda was being revealed 10 seconds at a time, was exactly my reaction. Holy Crap was the expression I used. This smart telescope is amazing. I will be using it at public outreach sessions to help explain why everything looks like a grey smudge in a big scope visually, while you see colours in the Seestar.
Trevor. As always, you are the North Star of astro reviews. I have the full set up for a number of years, and enjoy the challenge of imaging (even with skyglow, wind, clouds, and oh not to mention LED lights everywhere outside). But when I see something like this come along, I feel like I am witnessing the beginning of next gen imaging. True, it will not fully replace a full setup, but this is still an amazing foray into the hobby. Perhaps when so many have purchased this type of astronomy tool, we will start to realize that even though external lighting is making dark skies a multi-hour journey, having the Seestar S50 is creating a small opportunity to enjoy the wonder of the universe anywhere. Great job ZWO and excellent job Trevor!!!
The first dedicated so-called "Smart telescope" for EAA that I actually think is worth the money.
I've been watching all the Seestar S50 reviews and convinced that I need this. It does a lot and it's a small package that I don't have to work to carry out and setup. At 72 it's a new hobby.
I wanted this first before falling down the rabbit hole. Well, still not in stock in Canada, so ended up upgrading 60D to 2600MC Pro (backordered, go figure) and an Askar V (from dusty c90 mak) with L-extreme and L-Pro filters, and an asiair plus. I've gone too far, and just said what the heck, just get the EAF too. Weakest link is the mount (az gti eq mod). Owning the new goodies for about 3 weeks. I only got one night of 1.5hrs of clear skies! EAF is SPOT ON! Impressed... Managed to only get 21mins, 3 mins exposure of M31 on Askar V 80mm with reducer. Results blew my mind! Slewed to horsehead nebula and then right before I can see the first image, the clouds came back and wrecked it. Kinda went off topic here but been watching this channel since I got into astrophotography, around late summer. I may end up just building my own harmonic mount or at least attempt it. That's the only thing that I can possibly DIY for astrophotography to save a few grand and use it towards a mono camera. lol I was ready to dish out for an AM5 of a HAE29 but it's on hold until I figure out this DIY route and it's quite interesting to learn but frustrating at the same time.
Great review, looking at the Seastar and Vespara II. There is a sufficient price difference and wondering if it’s worth the difference?
could you try using the seestar in multiple nights photographing the same object until the signal-to-noise ratio is so good that it'd be as if a larger telescope with a better camera took it? e.g: orion nebula
I have tried this, but you’d have to manually stack as it can’t continue night to night. Also, if you didn’t catch it at the same time each night, the rotation in the frame would be different because it’s an alt-az mount.
@@BirdFinder good to know. i feel like if they make a new version with an eq mount itd be really nice, but the price could have a slight spike
And the light pollution is really bad too for me because I live very close to Prague and I may have to capture the Andromeda galaxy with my phone and beginer telescope after some editing because with the editing i take some beautiful images of Saturn, Jupiter and Moon only with that I have now, I really want to capture some other things that only planets and Moon and Sun, I want to capture the Andromeda, Orion and other galaxies and nebulas, I HATE the light pollution and clouds
Great review. Rudy is still the star of the show :)
Hi, Trevor, thanks for this informative video. I have been doing astrophotography at a modest level for at least 20 years (mainly with camera telephoto lenses), but having the Seestar has kicked my astronomy to a new level.
Your statement that it is limited to brighter DSOs is somewhat misleading. Last week, I imaged the Deerlick group of galaxies down to 15th magnitude, and Stephan's Quintet group of 14th magnitude in 20 minutes, though longer is better. The deepest I have captured was a mag 15.5 galaxy in Markarian's chain.
So the Seestar can challenge experienced astronomers as well.
Hello Trevor 😊 , I have 2 seestars because I am obsessed 😅 very nice robot equipment for the deepsky. I am happy for that . Very happy 🙏🏻! Because before I was make a disaster shots with my telescope . For the exposures makes always wrong photos 😢
wait i didnt quite understand what you meant by field of view for the planets looking small. can someone explain pls?
Nice review. We’re loving ours especially in station mode to use our home WiFi. Also added lukomatico’s external filter holders for moon and solar with a white filter. We can do more with this than my vespera. Clear skies
You have also a vespera ? Interesting, is it the same image quality than the seestar ?
Thank you !
I think this - and small, portable devices like it - are good for getting more people into astronomy/astrophotography.
It's not something I would buy as I would probably tire of it really quick, but I reckon it would be awesome for schools, outreach or for people who want an easy way to see "what all the fuzz is about".

I am really interested in this. Delivery seems to be an issue.
Edit: decided to order one
seeing all of the telescopes in the background is literally looking at my dream and i hope to (very slowly because they are insanely expensive) get to that point. Love to see it!
Great video, also well made/produced. Love the way you present the content!!!! Merry Christmas for you and your beloved ones
its not about the results its about the experience. i wont feel any different than just browsing images on the internet. i like my own images that i struggle to capture night after night no matter how bad they are since i was the one who struggled to capture them
A masochist.
Exactly my feelings on the subject, the sense of achievement is what it's all about for me. Some of my favourite images are the ones I have captured when using my original Star Adventurer mount which doesn't have goto and has to be positioned manually, up until last year I didn't even have any plate solving software
To be honest I do now have an expensive set up as well which I have built up over the years but I still love my star adventurer and red cat set up as well. Coming from an engineering background I love tinkering with things anyway, it's all part of the fun for me. I like to be able to change my camera/ lens/ scope combinations as well and also do a lot of narrow band imaging. To be fair, there are kits available to enable the SeeStar to be used with a range of dual and tri-band filters or to produce diffraction spikes so you do have some control over the final image. To me the difference is the same as taking a picture with a smartphone or a DSLR / mirrorless, they both give great results but you have far more input on the final result when using the DSLR / mirrorless cameras.

Fun and very accurate review. I pre-ordered my Seestar and finally got it 5 months later. For $399, this is a wonderful scope. I foresee new models with advanced optics and cameras. I took this one on a camping trip in Gold Butte National Monument and enjoyed some nice EAA even though the wind and near freezing temperatures kept us near the campfire.
Finally, a Seetar video. You should do a series of photographing DSO's with this thing.
Wow love the review. Does it work well during partially cloudy nights?
@1:44 you have an on-off symbol on your glove! Hahahah.. I had to rewind a few times to confirm that your glove and finger aren't transparent. That is so cool.. :-)

I was honestly looking for a good review of this telescope before thinking about pulling the trigger, I'm really glad that they gave a model to you to put your thoughts out there on it. I'm pretty sure I'll be getting one myself.
This is so simple. I wish we had better / dark skies in India with less light pollution.
Hello, is this telescope suitable for zooming in nature and zooming on the sea? And is the zoom power of this telescope greater than p1000?
naw. my camera doesnt cost 1k-1,5k. my camera is a 585 and was 300 bucks. it was my mount that costs over 1k. but i digress. my setup is about 2k and it doesnt make really better pictures but only marginally better to darn near almost the same. folks with 2 grand cameras are of course going to get a bit better photos or they will want to go die in a hole if they dont. after seeing what this thing does they might want to anyway.
Why can't someone make an affordable "smart" tracker like this for DSLR? Or even find a way to piggyback on the S50?
your last comments sum it up well , allowing others to see and enjoy , what we do hopefully adds more people to the list that realise we are lucky to have this planet and should look after it
