    Straight facts! It’s not a “cinema camera” by definition, externally or internally. But, the term “cinematic” is NOT defined by the camera but rather camera technique and lighting. RAW, BRAW and ProRes are definitely beneficial and cut editing times drastically down compared to stock 8-BIT highly compress footage but finding the right lens and color profile and settings for the G7 for certain scenes can be convincing. There is a reason the LUMIX GH line and Sony Alpha S-LOG APS-C line exist for affordable video centric options so don’t expect the G7 to make a jump on them.

      I have one as well and even though it lacks some features for video I still do amazing stuff with it Shots music videos, documentaries and commercial. What matters the most is to learn how to use lighting, composition, audio etc.. At the end of the day a camera is only a tool.

    I got the G7 for vlogging, streaming and content creation for a budget. I have been learning a lot about cameras since buying this camera and love it so much, I've been interested in looking into a Cinema camera. What would you recommend, budget, mid tier and top shelf camera for movie quality captures? These can and imo should include both stock and after market lenses and why for each. Thanks for the content man! I'll share it :) God bless brotha

      Mike, that's a great question. I can only tell you what I did. I've been using Panasonic so long that I know it inside and out so when they released the BGH1 it was a no brainer. It's a Hollywood approved Cinema camera (per Netflix), comes in at $2k which is priced better than most cinema cameras. It has Log profile so you get the dynamic range, you can use speed boosters allowing you to use other brand lenses like Canon, etc etc etc. Speaking of lenses now days you have Anamorphic like Sirui at super affordable prices and Meike cinema lenses less that $400 each, I'm just saying, I love my setup hehe - new videos coming very very soon.

      Yeah I sold footage from it to a big film company in Cali. Also did several documentaries on it.
      I will be making a few documentaries this year and submitting them to film festivals. Right now I'm just gathering the subjects to interview.
      I've done lots of music videos and photoshoots with it though. Unless you're a camera freak (like us) viewers don't know the difference. Every client is always impress by the quality.
      Im trying to step up to the Canon R5 though soon

      There are a lot of awesome cinema lenses you can use on micro 4/3. I could use speed boosters and use a whole world of lenses but to keep things as light as possible I went with native 4/3 lenses. You honestly can use any lens that has an adapter or fit natively really is up to your personal vision. I've tested a lot of lenses and I went with SLR magic microprimes. It's basically a gh4 minus the 10 bit. The gh5 is basically a gh4 just with some minor additions, some good, some bad.

    • @ProcessedDigitally
      @ProcessedDigitally 3 роки тому

      @@dpc4548 I own both the G7 and GH5. the noise reduction is much better on the GH5 than the G7 especially noticeable in photo mode. (if night time-lapses are your thing). The G7 based on samples i have seen is cleaner video that the GH4. The IBIS, 10bit and h.265, dual recording and high frame-rate options, the full sized HDMI port 6K anamorphic (or 5K open gate) I would consider as major differences over the GH4. That is the reason i avoided the GH4 because there were plenty reasons to get the GH5. There are plenty other minor improvements as well. I don't know about the bad additions moving from a GH4 vs GH5 perspective. I never owned the GH4 and i don't think it is a bad camera at all (it's great for the price now) but i would rather get a second GH5 for my professional work as those added features are big deals for me and my team. maybe if i didn't have the G7 i would choose a GH4 and two GH5 bodies. If you own a GH4 what are some things you would consider as bad on the GH5 from your perspective?

    • @dpc4548
      @dpc4548 3 роки тому

      @@ProcessedDigitally The GH4 and G7 have the exact same sensor and produce identical images on the surface level. The biggest difference, of course, is that 10 bit from the GH4 is better than 8 bit from the G7, unless you're doing broadcast, in which case it's 8bit all the way.
      The GH4 has a full sized HDMI port, native SDI and no IBIS, making it a far better option for cinematic work than the GH5, as well as fitting into professional broadcast settings that the GH5 simply can't. The BBC, NHK and many others still use GH4s as travel cameras for this very reason. I recently had to loan a crew one of my GH4s for a trek up Fuji as their stock were all in the shop and they had to go. They managed the whole shoot with one GH4 that has a faulty screen.
      There is nothing "bad" on any camera. Just things that don't work as well as others for certain use cases. If you film only weddings, the GH5 may be the best option you have. If you do short films, then you may be looking for RAW recording and not limiting it to 10bit.
      So yea, the G7 is a fantastic throwing camera for scouting and travel with the GH4 being used as a travel camera for serious work or more professional settings where you work with others. The GH6 may try to compete again, but if it continues using IBIS, then it'll continue to be avoided by the industry. The GH5s was close, but without SDI nobody took it seriously. The BGH was a VERY good step in the right direction, though.
      Sorry, this was a massive wall of text 2 weeks late...

      @@dpc4548 cool. The gh4 does not have a full sized HDMI port though. It's a good camera so many people will still have it. • @tommylamarr
      @tommylamarr  3 роки тому +2

      @@levelup2203 ok, so here’s the deal. By Manufacturers specs it isn’t a cinema camera. Can you produce cinema quality images? Yes, you sure can. Can you rig it up and make it perform like a cinema camera? Yes you can. 90% of creators today don’t have what the industry calls “cinema cameras ”, and that’s totally fine because the content created is beautiful when executed properly and that’s all that matters. We Only run into problems when trying to submit to major studios because “they” have this expectation that only content created on a select few cameras is acceptable. And we (creators) have even shot content on iPhones that far exceeded expectations, yet that isn’t even mainstream accepted and that’s ok because the industry is slowly but certainly moving in the content creators direction. I make cinema quality work with the cameras I have (Lumix G7 and G85) including my iPhone so use that Sony Alpha to the fullest of its ability and make some great cinema content.

    If you know how to set the picture right, shoot at the high bitrate and learn how to color in post, you can get some GREAT video out of it. Most importantly, knowing cinema and basic video composition will carry it a long way as a low cost video production tool.

And I'm not even talking DSLR's like the GH5 which is still an awesome camera. It only takes a cursory glance at the history of Cinema Camera features to debunk this argument. ND filters have never been built into cinema cameras until the last 10 years out of the 100 plus year history of cinema. LOG gamma is almost as recent of a feature as built in ND. Not enough dynamic range? Well, most feature films were shot with less that what this offers. Only 8 bit 4:2:0? Star Wars Episode 2 & 3 were shot at 1080p, 8 bit, 4:1:0 and no LOG.
    Having a "Cinema" camera doesn't make your images cinematic, Being a good filmmaker makes the cinematic camera. You are only limited by own skills and imagination. Invest in lighting equipment, learn to use it and people will hardly be able to tell the difference from a RED and the little G7.
    Cinematic images come from you, not the camera.

      This “rule” is left over from days of yore. In the early twentieth century, when cinema was new, audiences were easily confused by film language. They needed dissolves to understand passage of time, wavy wipes and twinkly music to clarify that a character was dreaming, and long establishing sequences so audiences knew where they were. Our modern film language (witness, for example, the stunningly layered digital transitions in The Life of Pi) would have confused the hell out of them.
      Times have changed.
      And when has a car commercial ever conformed to the 180 rule?!?!?! Let’s be smarter than this Major Tom...
