I lived in Sweden for a couple of years and I had to travel to Norway daily for work.
That border was meant to be high tech, you still had to wait 2 hours to get through. Also there was endless queues of trucks gong from one country to the next, and lets be honest this is Scandinavia they do things better there, it would be an absolute shit show in Ireland.
The Custom Checks should be done in the airports and docks in the North, if not an other border line should be drawn up half way through the 6 counties

Ver Coda that's not childish, that's being realistic. There are many people there that don't recognise the border and don't wish for the British state to erect any infrastructure at all to separate Ireland so I would think it would be extremely likely cameras would be attacked.

Big J Productions why would you want to break a union of nations that has existed for centuries in which there is a common history and identity? The UK is one of the largest economies on Earth with a permanent seat at the UN security council, it spends far more on the defence of Europe than any of our continental allies (with the UK being one of the 5 countries in NATO that bothers to spend 2% of GDP on defence) as well as having the largest soft powers on earth. Why would you wish to break such a Union? It will only result in small insignificant nations emerging with little influence in the world where there’s even doubts that they might not be part of NATO, none of the newly independent countries would have the economic strength, a permanent seat at the security council nor the soft power in which the union of these 4 nations have. For what purpose would breaking up the UK have? The people of all these nations in the union already have a democratic say in the direction of the country, the cultures and traditions of the respected nations within the union are respected and indeed encouraged.

When the British government presents us with a technology which can scan a truckload of cattle and verify their status in terms of Bovine TB, Brucellosis and 'Mad Cow Disease', we will give it an honest trial.
When the British government presents us with a technology which can scan a container of mixed cargo pallets bound for different destinations and verify their status in terms of allowed\forbidden, VAT rates, tariff rates, and customs duties, we will give it an honest trial.
When the British government presents us with a technology which can scan a container of food products, and verify their status in terms of compliance with bio\phyto-sanitary standards, place of origin, allowed\forbidden, labelling, VAT rates, tariff rates, and customs duties, we will give it an honest trial.
When the British government presents us with a technology which it alleges can survive the weather in the Border region, we will give it an honest trial.
UNTIL that Frabjous Day arrives, the Backstop WILL remain, because it MUST remain.
Let us be honest here. The British government and the Brixiteers have produced NOTHING concrete so far.
Pie in the sky? Lots of.
Ludicrous schemes which have never survived contact with reality? Certainly.
Enough hot air and marsh gas to change Northern Ireland's climate to tropical? Absolutely.
The constant repetition of their childlike 'Technology! The technological solution!!' mantra? Every week, minimum...
Border enforcement by camera equipped drone balloons? Yeah, that was a very brief thing.
So-called 'Max Fac', which would outsource the EU's customs enforcement to a third country, and nearly double the paperwork? Keeps being resurrected...
The brilliant 'Buffer Zone', where you buy one border and get three? Sorry, that was another David Davis brain fart, what can I say?
It has been THREE YEARS, and we are STILL waiting for ANY proposal from the UK which is even slightly connected with the concrete realities of the island of Ireland...
I will probably qualify for my pension before anything remotely realistic emerges from the bowels of the clown congress which is the current UK...

      Sir.
I must state that yours is a stupid, immature, and almost entirely subjective, and therefore over-opinionated disingenuous comment. It's the entirely hate based twaddle of the abject naysayer.
Just for a start, where, sir, is the border system TODAY "in terms ofBovine TB, Brucellosis and 'Mad Cow Disease" and WHAT has that to do with EU membership, or not, and WHY is it a problem? Explain ... instead of just the sarcastic suggestion of impossibility.
And please explain to everyone. HOW is the infamous "Backstop" supposed to benefit us here in Ireland? No; not how it benefits the EU bureaucrats and the remain politicians, but how it benefits Irish border people and Irish / UK trade in a manner not already possible with some piecemeal, detailed cooperative agreements almost identical to those already in place on the border today?
Please explain if you're so visionary on this subject.
Your hate based, sarcastic, foundation-less, ill read comment illustrates exactly the type of myopic attitude that keeps the destiny of our two beautiful nations, and the security of our families, in the hands of the idiot flag-waving brigade. People like you are the problem, not the answer to anything, and especially not the answer to anything in Ireland.
And all the while, "A nation once again ..." fades away as the S.F. brigade etc. push hard to hand over every Irishman's personal sovereignty and 100% of Ireland's blood-won independence to an wholly unelected distant body of foreigners who meet in secret, never keep accounts, yet have an agenda, already under 'political agreement' in the Marrakesh Compact, to homogenise our culture and society an, at the same time, make it illegal to discuss it.
And faith based twits like you want to keep on ankle biting the UK, who's working people are now fighting for their own independence?

      @@sixmagpies
Your response is both silly, and boundlessly ignorant. Typical of a Brixiteer.
At the moment, the ENTIRE island of Ireland is treated by the EU as a single unit in terms of animal and plant hygiene. Post-Brixit, this ceases to be the case, and veterinary checks will be required.
The Backstop is an insurance policy, which if it is invoked, will preserve the current status quo. This will benefit everyone on the island by maintaining minor things like cross-border trade, and all-island institutions including electricity supply, not to mention cross-border cooperation generally.
The notion that the Irish people should assist the UK in its suicidal and self-harming nonsense is too idiotic to be given house room.
We owe them nothing. Our duty is to defend our own interests.
Your paranoid racism is your problem, not mine or Irish people's generally.
Meanwhile, have you ANY solutions for the numerous disruptions that Brixit is guaranteed to bring to my island?
Shooting the messenger is neither an answer, nor a solution.

    • @gloin10

Just answer the question, please, especially in the light of your recently revealed local knowledge.
"Meanwhile, have you ANY solutions for the numerous disruptions that Brixit is guaranteed to bring to my island?"

    • @sixmagpies
      @sixmagpies 5 років тому

@@gloin10 Yes. My answer is that I'd rather retain for my children their personal sovereignty and rights under Common Law etc, be free to make their own decisions, crazy or otherwise, than they be ruled by a distant bureaucracy of foreigners.
As for solutions, as explained, many are not necessary as the are already in place and anyway, business and not politicians will sort it out, as always.
But the point is that while there may well be a little 'discomfort' for a while, I take the view that after falling into a briar patch, it's usually best to climb out, rather than just whine and sit there like an immature idiot "because it might hurt me".

no. the idea of solving the issue of the post brexit border by imposing a hard border that will be invisible on the ground because it will be patrolled using advanced technology is science fiction; not reality. one Irish newspaper gave it the serious consideration it deserves when they ran this satirical headline:- "brexiteers latest idea:- Doctor Who will guard the border."; still my favorite satirical headline ever; no offense to the creators of doctor who; picking doctor who instead of any other British sci fi was probably all about maximizing the number of people that get the joke.

Border is 500 km with about 350 Road crossings..
If I drive from Dublin to Donegal I must cross the border into n Ireland then recross it into the Republic of Ireland.
    But it gets worse.
School children would often cross the border for school. records it to go home for lunch. Cross it again to return to school after lunch.
Then home across the border for dinner. After dinner he or she may cross the border again for the 6th time to partake in After school activities such as drama football debate etc.
And you want to start questioning and searching the car in which they
    Are travelling in..
You British have not got a clue about Ireland. I included the Blond One & Co in that.
Doubt if they could name the 9 counties of Ulster.

Why should "animal welfare" suddenly be an issue once we leave the CU?
We trust the eu to prioritise the welfare of animals highly.
And the UK actually want STRONGER animal welfare rules.
For example, we are considering banning international exports of livestock and foie gras.
Why can't the eu just agree to monitor our animal welfare laws and make their judgement.
If we discover breaches we will prosecute.

      Or infected eggs?
      Or dodgy diesel cars?
      Or tainted wine?
      ...
These things get policed and caught.
There's no border now because we are in CU.
What's to stop people transporting counterfeit goods, or weapons or ammunition, or stolen goods or drugs or people (sex slaves) right now?
All of a sudden it becomes an issue?
It's all about tariffs and money and THAT'S ALL.

Uk out of the single market and the customs union when leaving the EU but then not rejoining them after (that including Northern Ireland) and being in WTO only, not in the EEA or EFTA either is incompatible to a continuing open border between Northern Ireland and the Republic, and the GFA.
WTO only guarantees the hard border, and it's the UK's responsibility.

OR there must be spot checks on MIXED transports....say 1 in every 20 vehicles....make the courier firms responsible for collecting duties same as at Heathrow and pay them something back so it is in there interests to do it....
