Can they grow in the tropical Caribbean? Where can i purchase some seeds? It reminds me of the Bottle brush trees. Do you store all your seeds in the fridge?
Super happy to see a new video - big fan, your videos have inspired me to try grow some Kowhai, Te Kouka, Hebe and Manuka from seed. However limited success so far haha but we'll get there I had a few questions about the soil in the seedling trays. What potting mix do you use, I always seem to get ones with big bits of bark in it and I try to remove them out. Is it a good idea to wet the soil slightly moist in the seedling trays before putting the seeds in to ensure some moisture retention? (I was advised to do this for Hebe and Ti Kouka - is this right?). Also is this advisable for other native seeds? In terms of seeds are there better places to get seed from? I have got some from Yates and McGreggors as I don't know the quality of these. Are there places you suggest to get good seeds from if you can't harvest your own? Thanks so much for all your videos!
Howdy Nathan. I use a good quality potting mix from Daltons which has a really great consistency. I know what you mean about the chunky bark in some mixes and I avoid those. you could try using a seedling mix in the top 1/3 of the trays as this is usually pretty fine but would add to cost. I always make sure the mix isn't too dry before I plant seed and a good idea to give a sprinkle if it is. Can't help you too much with seed problem as I mostly collect my own from the bush around me. I have bought seed from Egmont seeds and there is a 'NZseeds' website you could try. Some seeds are only available seasonally so this is worth enquiring about. Cheers. Max
Hi Max, Great to see you back making videos. Over the years the area / bench / shed? you shoot the vid's has changed I'm assuming this is just improvements or do you have different areas for different tasks etc. Any chance of future videos just being a couple of minutes longer showing where you place the seeded trays. Is it Shade House, Glass House, Full Sun, placed out in the native bush etc. Even a little vid on your setup would be great. PS thanks for the Bamboo Toast Tongs idea they work great. Cheers Ron.
Howdy. I do have a few different areas I do stuff in. There are three small shade houses, an outside bench where I do most of the work and a closed in seedling area I built to grow kauri through the winter. Will put together a vid soon. Thanks. Max
Howdy, I usually start planting seed in the spring as the days and nights start warming up and hopefully no frost. seed kept in the fridge should be fine over winter
Good idea. Actually I lost all the seedlings. Ended up not being able to water them for a while so have to start again. I have some yellow seed from a Coromandel tree.
@@redearthnativeplants165 that kinda sucks I'm glad you have more seed , since seeing your video I've been searching for one on my part of the east coast to get seed or cuttings from. Is the seed easy to find on the internet or do you think it's a case of knowing the right people sort of a thing
I've tried twice to grow from seed and nothing at all germinated. Where abouts do you put them to germinate? Outside in full sun or in the shade? How many days would you expect until germination? I have some seed still from last summer in the fridge so tempted to try again
Thanks for another great informative video! always super relaxing.
Thanks. Hopefully more soon

Keep trying Fryn!. I have a closed in area that I use as well as an open shade area with benches. Will be doing a short vid to show these soon. Cheers
