- This week we row our own gears in a manual gearbox-equipped Audi S4 Quattro. This Misano Red example comes equipped with the Black Optic package, which includes 19-inch wheels, summer tires and high-gloss black appearance tweaks.
The S4's 3.0-liter supercharged V6 churns out 333 horsepower and 325 pound-feet of torque and is matched to a close-ratio six-speed transmission with a dual mass flywheel, which then routes the grunt to a Quattro sports differential, making for quite an entertaining drive

Same here. I would watch this video over and over. In 2018 I was lucky to find my own manual 2016 B8.5. Never looked back.
The changes between gears are so crisp and clean. This car IS worth the money.

It’s been five years since anybody commented on this video or the second video of the Audi S4 manual transmission. There are those of us who still are out there looking at used Audis and your videos are a big help. I drove the DCT version and it just didn’t hit me. Now I know I have to have one with a manual although they are rare, rare, rare. I currently own a 2001 A6. 2.7T 6 speed manual, also rare, but it will be soon time to upgrade. Thanks for your videos. DCT’s may be faster shifting but there’s nothing like a six speed manual where you’re totally in control. It’s too bad they are pretty much going extinct.
Just recently acquired a 2014 s4 with a manual. Man let me tell you how much I've been enjoying it so far. I haven't really been hard on it as I'm still doing maintenance, but when that's done it'll be a blast to drive😂
@@agustinortega5734 Well sounds great... The S4 with a manual seems real sweet. The manual is best way to bond with a car. Here in Colorado Springs with 1000 stop lights, the manual can get a little tedious but having one in Washington (not Seattle) was lots of fun. I am sure it is even more fun in the S4. To cut down on the number of cars, I sold my A6. I am now driving a BMW X3, 35i with a ZF8 transmission. It is about as good as it gets with an SUV. 0-60 in (5.5 secs) The ZF8 is really great especially in Sport mode and also it has a manual mode. Still watching the S4 manual makes me wish I had one of those too. Enjoy!
I have always like Audi and this video does not disappoint. Clean and sharp interior makes it look modern and classy. Manual transmission keeps it a drivers car.

I work at a Audi dealership and this car was fantastic to drive. My favorite Audi so far... Haven't driven the S8 yet.

Try the RS4! With that great V8 sound you won't go back to the S4 or S8 models. Watch Winding Road's RS4 test with the great David E. Davis, Jr. on the California Mille! Awesome!

Ahh I love it when you guys get a manual transmission car to drive around in your typical POV fashion. The S4 is a beautiful car and I'm glad Audi has given us smalltime enthusiasts the manual box we so much love. Awesome video again guys and I love those downshifts !! You can't compare a DSG box to such awesomeness.
You really can compare a DSG. Like moog from mighty car mods says, "Get a horse, that's as pure as transport gets". If you prefer manual then fine, but don't be one of those people who think that the thing they don't like is bad simply because they don't like it. Also, you have to drive a manual to be an "enthusiast"? Stick to BMWs, suits your character better.
@@bsg2923 Where did he state that automatic transmissions are bad? Where did he say that you have to drive manual to be an car enthusiast? I can't even imagine being so incredibly insecure about what i drive that i have to offensively respond to every statement that's even SLIGHTLY against it, especially if it's not against it AT ALL, like the guy above who literally only stated his personal preference.
I would highly recommend you to shut the fu*k up and go sit in your low powered, DSG economy sh*tbox. Seems to suit your character perfectly.

Sounds fun in theory, but I'm not sure that the owner of the vehicle (or whoever loaned it to WR for the test drive) would appreciate him beating the shit out of it.

It's a balancing act I'm sure. He wants to show the capability of each car but avoid going into the "reckless driving" zone (through the eyes of the police, not us!). He does pretty well I think.

I honestly think this is the best Audi they ever made. Love the gauges, you arent overwhelmed by the technology and there is just a vibe of smooth, executive luxury about this vehicle, I love this car.

I valet at the moment for a night time job, I'm used to getting the "big cars" like ferrari lamborghinis bentley maseratis..... but i always find myself more excited to drive one of these (S5 or S4) its just a great balanced car
Quality/Looks/Performance/ and they usually hold their value well as well.
Will probably be my next car.

Motortrend dyno, the S4 is putting down 330hp at the wheels. What an amazing sport sedan. For the 3800lbs it's putting out 390hp at the crank to get the 4.4 0-60. Perfect size car for day to day. S4 is a beast
Such a gorgeous car with a gorgeous sound. You guys always do these videos justice. Nothing overwhelming, but nothing too soft either. A light whine of that 3.0 supercharger with that beautiful exhaust sound. Really wouldn't want anything other than this car.

Sounds beautiful! Last year a got a 2015 A4 that is also manual. I love it to death and it's probably gonna be my forever car. The absolute only thing I regret about it is not attempting to find a manual S4 first. But still very happy nonetheless
I was hoping for more supercharger whine, oh well great review as always.
If you raise the volume up, you can hear the whine in the lower gears.

Agreed, this was a lot of fun to drive! There's no rev-matching in the S4...just my old fashioned right foot.

Winding Road Magazine Blipping the throttle with your right foot is the same as rev matching, whether intentional or not. The pause between gears allows the synchros to slow enough to get good clean shifts. So don't confuse your readers. And no the S4 doesn't auto-blip the throttle on downshifts. That is just the test driver doing that to make it sound cool, since he is not "rev-matching"!

Mikab61 The DSG's do rev match and also, the 2014's and up do have rev matching with the 6 speed manual transmission too.
+Winding Road Magazine You're wrong. The S4 DOES have rev-matching on downshifts in both the manual & the dual-clutch auto...

Only S-Tronic here in SG as well. Heck, there's no manual option except for the R8 V8 in the whole Audi line-up.

I'm not going to jump on a conversation that happened two months ago but to clear things up, the reason every single Audi has an understeer issue is because the engine is in FRONT of the axles. It's not over them. Because there is so much additional weight up front, the car will tend to push out of corners when entry speeds are too fast. I've driven just about every single Audi from the old 4000s to an RS5 and they all have some sort of understeer issue when pushed hard. Just what makes these cars great in my opinion.

I doubt you'll see this comment after so long, but as a car guy do you prefer Audi/VW new DSG or the good old 6 speed?
+Matthew Hutzell the Dual clutch is known to be more fuel efficient and faster than the 6 speed but it depends what you prefer. If you live in a city with stop and go traffic being common, you should get the Dual clutch. If you live in a place where there are tons of country roads and you dont deal with heavy traffic, the manual is great. But, people do use manuals in both conditions. I would personally get the Dual Clutch here in miami.
