- The world is changing faster than at any other period in human history. We are blurring the lines between science fiction and reality more and more each day. In a world where human innovation is outpacing conscious leadership, critical thinking skills have never been more important yet they’re often not a priority in traditional education. In this talk we explore the idea that the way we’re educating our kids may be preparing them for today but it’s not setting them up for success in the world of the future and that the promise of education has been broken. Michael is a 20+ year technology entrepreneur and CEO with a formal education in fine art and painting. His experience and love for technology, psychology, nature, art & music shaped his unique perspective on work and life. Becoming a father opened his eyes to the shortcomings of traditional education to prepare a new generation for what he sees as a rapidly changing world and he discovered his why. Michael's mission is to inspire and engage people to become curious, capable, passionate, purposeful, and globally aware leaders, and to find true success in all aspects of their lives. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx
I completely agree with the speaker that critical thinking is more important now than ever before. We need to teach our kids how to think, not just what to think.
As a parent, I resonate with the speaker's concern about preparing our children for a world that's constantly evolving. It's a responsibility we all share to help them develop the necessary mindset and skills to navigate the future.
I couldn't agree more that it's up to all of us to repair the broken promise of education. Let's engage with young people, spark their curiosity, and empower them to shape a better future for themselves and the world
It's mind-blowing to think that we've come so far in such a short span of time. From horseback riding to virtual reality and gene editing, the possibilities seem endless
when I think about my high school experience very little of what I learned in class stuck with me- what did was the experiences with other students, dealing with the pressure of getting work done, etc. I think there's an opportunity for other students in the future to have a more enriching experience than just those aspects
This is such a stark title but I understand what he means - especially with all the difficulties finding a job even once you've got a degree. Broken promises for sure.
Wow, it's incredible to see how much human innovation has accelerated in such a short amount of time. It's exciting to think about what the world will look like in 2062
thanks for highlighting in such a tangible way how quickly the world is evolving and the increasing importance of personalized learning!
So many powerful messages here! What if we put the same energy and investment into modernizing education as we do into social media?! Our kids need skills for conscious leadership now more than ever. Thank you for bringing these issues to the forefront! 🙏🏼
There is no question, that the old teaching ways of memory capacity are wrong, and experential learning is what causes students to own the knowledge they gather. Good talk.
Thank you! I'm glad it landed for you and appreciate the comment.
a great point about the importance of durable skills like creativity and leadership. I hope schools start to prioritize teaching these skills alongside traditional subjects.
Yes it would be great to have something that translates to real world ability
celebrating each student's unique gifts and fostering confidence is inspiring. Education should empower individuals to know themselves and make better decisions for the benefit of society.
Thank you and yes, I agree completely!
AMAZING JOB MICHAEL!! Great talk on something that needs to be discussed so that we can better prepare our children for the future. You crushed it! 🤩
This is a really interesting perspective Michael, thank you for putting this out there
thanks for sending me the link Caroline, I agree!
Thank you for hearing it!
The disconnect between traditional education and the demands of the future job market is concerning. We need to prioritize teaching durable skills like creativity, leadership, and effective communication in schools.
BRAVO!! Great work Michael. Doing good work in the world. ❤️❤️❤️🙌🙌🙌
You know, if we keep up this rate of innovation, by the time my grandkids are my age, they'll probably be attending classes on Mars and submitting homework via teleportation. Talk about taking distance learning to a whole new level!
I never really thought about how traditional education doesn't prepare us for the future. It's definitely a problem that needs to be addressed.
It does and it doesn't - there's certainly things we need to learn that are taught in traditional education, but there's a significant amount of things missing and that gap is widening. My talk is a call to action - to consider what our kids will need to be the leaders that we need and help them get those skills and mindset!
As a parent, this presentation really hit home for me. I want to make sure my kids are prepared for the world they will live in, not just the world I grew up in
I'm so glad it landed for you! The intention of it was a call to action!
Man, it's crazy to think about how much the world has changed in such a short time. Can't even imagine what it'll be like in 2062. 🤔
Personalized education and the need for relevant, adaptable learning models is crucial. We should invest in developing happier, purpose-driven young individuals equipped with problem-solving abilities.
Excellent point that we need to be teaching soft skills or durable skills to kids so they are ready for the requirements of jobs in the real world.
As an educator I truly agree with the mindset you shared and try hard to make some of the things you shared happen... truly inspirational Ted Talk..
Thank you Andrea!
So well spoken. Great job cuz!
Investment in transforming education models is the BEST kind way to ensure the longevity of our future. Imagine the positive impact if we prioritize developing purpose-driven, resilient, and curious young individuals. It's time to redefine success in education.
I have to agree with Michael that school isn't preparing children for the future. Possibly because we've no idea what their future will look like.
“I have never let my schooling interfere with my education.” ― Mark Twain
Fantastic quote!!! And so true :)
Crushed it brother!!
I've noticed that traditional education often neglects teaching the durable skills needed for future jobs. It's time to prioritize creativity, leadership, and effective communication in our classrooms.
Yes yes! Skills that will transfer to all endeavors beyond school.
Whoa, mind blown! We can video chat with someone on the moon, but our education system is stuck in the past. Time to catch up, folks!
Such a relevant and important message today - well done Michael! Thank you
Thank you!!
Imagine if we put as much effort and money into transforming education as we do into making addictive social media content. That would be a game-changer!
It's alarming to hear that only one in four high school graduates are college ready in the four core subjects. We need to do better for our students.
2:20, this is truth and educators are digging in and stopping the progress needed to make sure our students are ready for life after school is done.
I believe educators are doing everything they can to keep up with the speed of innovation but the system they operate inside of is flawed and too slow to adapt - leaving them handcuffed.
@@mftrezza There are plenty of educators out there that are not embracing innovation due to resentment. Mass healing is needed.
Truth, century old education system, failing todays students
The statistics Michael quoted for the number of children leaving High school with the required skills across basic subjects was rather woeful.
I hope by 2062, we'll have flying cars and robot assistants. Imagine the convenience and fun that would bring
The graduation numbers in this talk are very concerning.
They are! It's a statement on our real priorities and lack of commitment to education.
I understand the need for change, but let's not discard traditional education completely. It's a proven system that has produced great leaders throughout history.
Absolutely! Update, transform and make more appropriate for the requirements of today, but absolutely not discard!
Amazing to think that 92% of the world's population has a mobile phone.
It happened in such a short time as well!
wild. one of the fastest shifts in tech I've seen in my lifetime, that's for sure
Is critical thinking at odds with traditional education? I think the process of learning should be the key that drives the human mind to disern between fact and fiction. It should be the catalyst that drives us to stay on a true path, not a conspiracy journey.
Listen to Jordan Peterson, he speaks the truth!
He speaks what's true to him, but not necessarily what's true for everyone
Traditional education? More like straight up old-school. Time to embrace the digital age, folks.
I can't help but wonder if by 2062, we'll have AI-powered teachers and exams taken in virtual reality. No more complaining about homework, just plug in and let the algorithms do the work
AI powered teachers and exams will be here in the next few years!
Really so negative and wrong
I’d love to talk to Talker
oh look, another broken promise from yours truly, capitalism.
Interesting but Nothing new
