Let's talk about tech: Cold Climate Testing of an Arctic fighter

  • A jet fighter needs to be always combat ready, regardless of weather conditions, hot or cold. In order to make sure everything works despite harsh winter conditions, we perform cold climate tests for the Gripen fighter system, close to the Arctic circle in northern Sweden.

When my dad was still in the Belgian airforce, and responsible for cross-servicing and other tasks, he could bring the family to the airbase every year during sanicole airshow. I saw Hundreds of fighters up close this way, a very rare privilige for a civilian, especially a young lad. But of all the fighters i saw, the Saab Gripen stood out.
The Czech republic pilot, who flew this Gripen... He was in love with it. The way he talked about the Gripen, i never heard a man talk with so much faith in his machine. And the Czech airforce only had them for 2 years.
And i spoke to Many pilots. From many diffrent nations.
Just wanted to share my memory. Thank you Saab for making these amazing aircraft that protected european & beyond skies.

I also noticed mentioned that comment how user friendly it is and I know nazi and british plane fleet improved these small details in their air forces during WW2 with staggering results for ordinary men (which btw decide the war, not singular fighter aces). One expert told in tanks this is crucial difference why Leopard is so good despite having age as old as soviet made T-72 or T-80 platform.
But Im curious, is stealth that important? Saab also has similar setup with electronic jamming planes, crucial flying with stealth fighter, that why Gripen isnt used more than F35? To me it sounds very good cost benefit wise.

If you stand with Ukraine, you should DENOUNCE the neo nazi paramilitaries and extremists that have held Ukraine hostage since 2014 and are using civilians for human shields so they can blame Russia. Just like we see with the empty maternity hospital in Mariupol that the Russians were warning about. But if course no one wants to listen to Russia.

I love the in-Built flexibility this plane offer over the F-35. The low turn-around time required between flights and the primitive runway capability means every Highway becomes an airstrip which in turn means that your airforce can easily operate even if all normal support facilities have been taken out. This is an undeniable advantage in future wars. Moving air-ops support and inflatable hangars. Make the countryside and woodlands usable by air-power as well as ground one.

Hey, I never really post on youtube... However, this video connected with me on a very... deep-seated core level that I don't think I've ever experienced before. I feel like I'd have to write an essay to convey just how on point you are with the undertones, and honestly... I'd give anything to be able to live there. Ya'll Saab dudes have been around for a hot minute but, your moral compass has never waned. I don't even know why I'm writing this, you're a company. I had the wonderful pleasure of getting the hell out of impending doom when Nato decided to chuck a couple of accidental presents very god damn close to a god damn bus full of literal civilians [myself included] that wanted nothing to do with any of the insanity that was going down in Yugoslavia at the time, but somehow my immediate family ended up getting into a saab after said surprise gift was lodged at said bus and I genuinely owe you folks my life in some weird, twisted way lol. I'm almost 40 now, Canadian citizen, slowly watching my country get more and more polarized in almost exactly the same way that the people in Yugoslavia started brewing initially and it makes me a little worried but more sad than anything at this point in my life. used to work for a major oil&gas giant doing all the boring network/itsec stuff... but boy howdy, the things that I've witnessed that company do without any care for the future generations made my hair stand on end once I fully understood how messed up quite literally everything is. I just unfortunately had to keep my mouth shut and tow the company line. And now, the whole world is basically back in some twisted cold war era psyop orchestrated by a single man that somehow managed to make the entire planet poop their pantaloons all at once. Fun fact, if ya'll ever get curious about why apparently the M got taken out of MaD by a former kgb pres-4-lyf, it's because a whole lot of money got shoveled at a defense contractor in Russia to breathe whole new life into deadhand... they objected a few times in official emails, for whatever that's worth... but in the end... they did what they did and yayyyyy, we get to live in this world now. Putin seriously underestimated how illequipped soviet era tehnology was against a determined group of grannies with fucking moltovs, and I'm sure the mass graves will remain available from private sat corps with clear signs of genocide being commited by him so that even if the world does capitulate to whatever that nutjob has in his head, at least history might eventually be able to be set straight. This is getting kinda heavy and deep, and I'm likely going to say things that might make my life a lot worse than it currently is but, I'm rooting for you dudes. I'm not going to pretend to know exactly what the innerworkings of the grippen are in regards to security, however... a suggestion if you're willing to listen, if you're goign full fly by wire system in there, you might want to reconsider and still leave at least some basics available to the pilot if things really get ultra-wild. The US learned that a very hard lesson with the F35's publicly not too long ago, and f22's privately... a loooooot longer ago. I wish ya'll would have posted vids like these a lot earlier btw, if there's anything I can do to help ya'll out in any way, I'll happily do so... just ask... I want zero to do with money, and if it means even saving one single innocent life in the long run, whether it the life of a test pilot or any human on earth by sacrificing my own safety and life, I'll happily assist with zero worries about what might happen to me. And again, I don't want money, or some kinda backup plan, just genuinely extending you dudes and dudettes a very warm "thanks for saving my ass when it mattered by building a car that crossed my path at just the right time", i'm not a religious man but the geopolitical insanity going on right now almost makes me wish I was tbh. Anyway, what the hell is wrong me me, I'm venting to a car company/defense contractor on a Wendsday. Wild. Like I said, I'm just a middle aged ex-itsec dude that hopes for a better tomorrow for humanity, but has seen enough suffering that I'm willing to sacrifice everything so no one else has to go through the kind of crap I did first hand. tldr, ty, ya'll are a bunch of swell folks. wishing you the best, if ya'll need a hand with anything, gimme a shout... cheers - Canada.

Question for you is, do you guys have a dedicated storage place for old or retired aircraft to either be scrapped or reused down the road? Also, I l know logistics would be an issue. But if you can consider donating an airframe to the Tucson Air and Space Museum, that would be neat! It would be nice if one day we can see more foreign aircraft at air shows here....

I'm Chilean and there's no year that passes that I don't regret my country's air force didn't bought your aircraft. We had second hand F-16 from two different blocks, they are a compromise because they will have limited options for upgrade and lifespan. I read that you SAAB offered aa part of the deal to open a Scania truck assembly plant here in Chile, but a couple of bribes from the Dutch and Lockheed sealed the sell of that F-16. I still hope someday we will get some of your aircraft.

The only system that a "cold climate" aircraft really needs is missing from the Gripen - that is THRUST VECTORING (steeable nozzle). Much better than snow chains on the tyres!🤣❗

Hey SAAB, i want to ask you: Could we design a parachute system for fighter jet? If the engine fail, the pilot jumps out and the plane wreck, that is total waste of money.
If we have parachute, we could land aircraft safely and then fix it later. I know it is impossible for comercial aircraft ~80 tons, but fighter jet is much lighter, so is it practical?

@@showbikshowmma3520 offcourse! Gripen is not even in the competition. it was rejected way back.
The smartest thing Parrikar did in 2016 was cancel the MMRCA and instead ordered just 36 Rafales. On the other hand, 83 Tejas mk1A was approved and finally ordered in 2016.

AMCA - Full detailed development phase has began.
TEDBF - Development phase has began.

The only import will be is a small number of Rafales, maybe another 36, cause India has already spent a lot for its capital infrastructure.
The single engine area will be handled by over 250 Tejas. 123 Tejas mk1/A..already ordered, another 120-140 Tejas mk2 will be ordered around 2025-26.
