Doctor says my own time is very short, so to all the good people I've met and great friends I've shared the best craic, I hope they lift their glasses to me one last time... and then go on enjoying life! For Phil - We know God is resting ye gentle.
This is truly the very best version of this beautiful song. There is more emotion in one note than some other versions have in the whole song......................................love it.
Absolutely the definitive version, , most powerful and moving, , stirs something that stretches back many years in my keltic soul and memory, ,thank you voice squad
I freaking loved these guys since I first heard them! Their version and Shaun Davey's version from the movie Waking Ned Devine feel like the true versions of this song.
Ah, the memories of the sessions in Mrs Carberry's, Drogheda, back in the 70s with the lad's harmonies and Fran McPhail's voice soaring above .... 40 years on this still brings a tear. Sheer emotion! Beautiful........
These guys are so fabulous, great choice of songs and wonderful harmonies. What amazes me most is how they can be so synchronized without ever looking at each other!
hairoil I don't know, but you can certainly watch lips and faces! Most people who sing together without a conductor also watch each other. I'm a musician, and I was trying to say something nice, so I don't need lectures from smart alecks about how they're listening.
Remembering Phil Callery R.I.P. who passed away suddenly while peforming at a concert on 1st June 2022. Phil is the man with the glasses on the left in the above clip..R.I.P.
Anyone else had to replay the very beginning many times as they were in disbelief the guy in the middle was making that incredible sound through that tiny hole in his very relaxed face. Like self ventriloquism
tumadoireacht They sang it beautifully when they were young(er) men, and they sing it beautifully still, 40 years on. So much more poignant now, when mortality looms larger.
how hard it has to become to find a more modest rendition of this beautiful traditional song. It seems like every modern rendition must be chocked full of vocal adornments to show off the vocal prowess of the singers. why? it is a beautifully written harmony in its own right. and dont even get me started on the studio recordings being passed off as live renditions.
The barmaid part of the song...does it have a double meaning once the chorus comes up? Like normally when they say "Fill to me the parting glass, goodnight and joy be with you all.", it is referring to their best wishes to their friends and family at the end of a meeting (or possibly bidding farewell to a dead friend at their funeral). However, when said after the barmaid portion of the song, it almost implies that they're asking their eye-catching bar maiden with whom they're about to seduce in bed to "get wet" by "filling her parting glass" as they wish a goodnight to others, for they'll be conducting the act of procreation and will get none themselves. Maybe I'm being perverted, but if there were a sexual implication to that verse, it'd be awesome.
It's not "barmaid", it's "fair maid". "If I had money enough to spend and leisure time to sit awhile, there is a fair maid in this town that surely has my heart beguiled. Her rosy cheeks and ruby lips, I own she has my heart in thrall. So fill to me the parting glass; goodnight, and joy be to you all." The point of the song, surely, is that the person is dying and saying farewell to his friends, his sweethearts, his memories, and all his hopes. "But since it fell into my lot that I should rise and you should not, I'll gently rise and softly call goodnight, and joy be to you all".
How could anyone think this is the best version of this song? Horrible, just horrible. Nearly no harmony, horrible change in lyrics, and there voices sound like watery old men. I think one of them is even attempting to yodel.
The contrast of the vapid souless media friendly musical intro to the pitch perfect emotional rendition of a remarkable song is something to behold.
what a fantastic comment.

The very best version of The Parting Glass.
No one will ever surpass these gentlemen performing this gem...
You may lay me in earth to their artistry...💖
Something tells me this is how this gorgeous song should be sung forever

I think these guys do the definitive version of this beautiful ballad.
They do...
Met these guys at Whitby folk festival maybe 30 years ago. Made me tearful then, same just now. Wonderful x
Those guys are great , tears are never far away
Absolutely spectacular.
Absolute legends. That's what you call real singing. Great to see them still performing
Sing this one when I am no more. And it is my wish that those who hear it understand the truth within it and within my heart. We come and we go.
This hauntingly beautiful tune rarely fails to bring a tear to my eye.
Try I am Stretched on Your Grave, that gets me!
I freaking loved these guys since I first heard them! Their version and Shaun Davey's version from the movie Waking Ned Devine feel like the true versions of this song.
Great version. Freddie White stripped down solo acoustic is powerful too. As are the lassies in a pub on here too. Room for many versions.

So beautiful and emotive.
Just the best.
Gets me every time!
Fran McPhail might be the best singer I've ever heard.

Best voices.

Voice Squad is a very very high priority for me vocally, especially this and Banks of the Bann.

This is nice. The High Kings do a great rendition also.
more dramatic with the pipers at the end of the video but this is pure without adornment or gimmicks, just fabulous voices
Never heard a finer version:
Second best after Freddie White’s
