@@hungrygoriya Yeah, it kind of made sense when you mentioned that it’s a pal region game. European games always seem to have a different pixel art sensibility. Maybe because we see it less often in the US. The dinosaur napping is also ridiculously cute.
Oh wow this game looks really cool despite the huge glaring flaws actually. I've been looking for dino games that are actually fun and unique and this may be one I'll have to keep an eye out for when it comes to my collection. Can't believe I've never heard of this before!
Well this is surreal, has no one in this comment section played this before? I had this as a kid (I live in the UK), I as looking for the music on UA-cam but it isn't uploaded anymore. I figured this game must be well known like the other games I played, I guess my mum just knew I liked dinosaurs and happened upon it. As said in the video, it's a really basic metroidvania with combat like Pokemon (in particular the element system). A dinosaur is born, you get them to the end, then a new one is born and so on. The order is the same every time I think. I'm pretty sure I never beat it as a kid, it's not a forgiving game haha
I only know one person who knew about this game, and it was the person who told me about it! Glad you got to play this when you were a kid. It's awesome!
@@hungrygoriya This got me thinking, I imagine a lot of games I played as a kid weren't anywhere near as known as I think they are, due to them not shipping to America. Did you guys have games like Pugsy or Dizzy over there? As for gameboy, Action Man: Search for Base X is another weird metroidvania type game, incredibly good soundtrack to boot (The Ruins level has the best song from my memory) Great video btw, it was a nice jab of nostalgia :)
"...as cute as that looks it's a real blood-boiler." 😂😂 This game somewhat reminds me of E.V.O.: Search for Eden on SNES. P.S. Your voice is the antonym of melancholy...
Yeah, the dinosaurs and murdering everything around you is definitely EVO-like... the graphics are kinda similar to when you're in Dinosaur Times in that game. And thanks! I swear it's just the audio equipment I have!
Great review as always. Never heard of this one, which is weird for someone who loved dinosaurs and loves RPG's. I'm a big fan of how colourful and detailed the game looks, and how many different dinos they managed to get in there as enemies. While the game gets some real bonus points for having Plesiosaurus, I have to deduct a lot of points for the lack of a playable Stegosaurus. Everyone knows that they're the best dinosaurs! :D That apostrophe in the title is really bugging me though. Is it supposed to be read as a pun, like "Dinosaur Us" or "Dinosau R Us" like Toys R Us?
There was a severe lack of stegos... I agree with you! I loved seeing the return of the plesiosaurus after falling in love with Adventure Island II as a kid... hooray! And thanks for your kind words. I really enjoyed this game despite some of its frustrations. If you still like dinosaurs and RPGs, it's worth a play knowing what you know now about the elements and things. I wish I knew more about the title and why it's spelled like that. It bothers me too, but there's a big pile of nothing out there on this game. Let me know if you find out!
Okay...this game sounds amazing, and is so completely different to any other game I've seen...the closest would perhaps be EVO Search for Eden? How have I never heard of this game before? :o EDIT: NVM, European exclusive. That was dumb...
It's crazy that it didn't end up in North America, honestly. And I was thinking of EVO too, but it's even quite a bit different from that too! It's really weird. EVO's in a league all its own as well!
What an interesting game. I had never heard of it before watching this video. It would seem one of them diamonds in the rough. Somewhat unpolished in its mechanics but solid in many others. The detailed and expressive graphic is especially impressive. I think a lot of people could perhaps have confused the game with the Disney movie that bears a very similar name, thinking that maybe this is just some kind of cheap knock-off even though it's definitely unique in its idea, let alone for a Game Boy Color game. Thanks for bringing this game to my attention :)
I was pretty floored when I first had a look into it too... it's so different from anything else I've seen before! And I think you nailed it too... the Disney movie came out just around that time. I feel so bad for anyone making a game related to a popular movie theme because how could you possibly know, right? But I hope you'll have a chance to try it out sometime. It's definitely worth a playthrough knowing about the elements in advance and being prepared for some of the platforming troubles.
Wow, this... is an interesting find. I'm happy to hear it was a PAL exclusive because that explains why I had absolutely never heard of it before. Whoever made this, at any rate, was pretty damn good at the GBC hardware. It even looks like they're using bitmaps that are taking advantage of the high-color mode (usually reserved for still frame "cutscenes" in games like Bionic Commando Elite Forces or Tomb Raider GBC) for the backgrounds instead of opting for traditional sprite tile sets, and those big, awkward sprites are animated pretty damn well too. How is this an unlicensed game from a no-name developer? Sure the design has it's flaws - including that huge soft-locking one - but this is no shovelware. Who made this? _*looks them up... goes down a bit of a rabbit hole_ Man, weird! So this was made by RFX Interactive. I remember them! They're the devs behind Turok Evolution, Lady Sia, and Dinotopia on the GBA, which are all REALLY GOOD. Also, they really liked dinosaurs, huh :D They were an interesting little studio! And there's a PC version of Dinosaur'us from a different developer? How odd. I figured when it came to RPGs on the Game Boy Color, you'd talk about Magi-Nation or Azure Dreams or Metal Walker or something. I mean, *all* of the RPGs on the GBC are pretty obscure, honestly. It's just that no one talks about any of them. But even in _this_ library, you found something like this? I'm in awe XD You're really good at finding obscurities to talk about. Love that about this channel!
Woohooo! I'm lucky enough that a friend told me about this game and that I found a copy of it on eBay not too long after the fact. And you're right... it's so beautifully done and so cool that it's a shame that not more people know about it. I'm glad you're enjoying the spontaneity of the channel though. I'll keep doing my best to report on things like this! I hope to explore more of the GB/GBC library. There are so many interesting looking games to try out. I just need to find the time to play them! Thanks again for your thoughtful comments here.
@@hungrygoriya Have you ever heard of a channel called Game Boyle? Oh yeah... sometimes I'd get into a battle and get killed right away. There was quite a bit of luck involved, and I was really happy for the autosave feature!
This is a great concept for a game, and you're totally right about the animations for each character. That soft-block sounds super frustrating, for sure. "Crossing all my relevant appendages" made me laugh. Great review! How did you find the game???
I liked this one overall, though some of the design choices were frustrating to me. It was a bit repetitive, but really unique in a sea of very same-y RPGs.
Man what a crazy game. I've certainly never heard if this, but I wish I had. I see the pokemon similarities, but the element system kind of reminds me of Quest. A lot of dings here, but man I really wanna check this out!
It's such a weird little game eh? I'm so pleased with how fun it was despite the few glaring issues here. Knowing what you know now about elements, you shouldn't run into half as much trouble as I did hopefully. Good luck with that volcano if you check it out though! Seriously... so awful!
This game looks like a hybrid of mechanics and design from E.V.O., Shantae, Quest, Adventure Island and Pokemon. Seems fun, but certainly diminished by the lack of a little more polish. Give your team two weeks uninterrupted and they might surprise you.
There's definitely a lot going on here and I liked every bit of it aside from the not-so-nice controls in some of the platforming sections. Apart from that though, and the terrible softlocking situation, it's a great little game. If you know about the magic system going in beforehand, you should honestly be fine in theory.
So, I put off watching this video for about a week because I figured I may not be particularly interested in the game... But wow, I'm impressed! Soft locking aside (which is terrible), this game looks quite cool. And as I think you know, I am a sucker for genre mashups (nice shout out for The Guardian Legend in the vid BTW :). The sprite work and animation is so good for a GB Color game. I also love all the dinos you can switch between and the game just oozes personality. I mean, were you crawling along the ground with an Elasmosaurus? What? LOL! Anyway, great vid, and this game seems super cool. I think if you go into it knowing the flaws and how to avoid them it would be a much better experience overall. Thanks for letting us know about them.
I'm glad you finally decided to have a look. I was pleasantly surprised by what this game had to offer, and knowing what I know now, it's a lot more of a joy to play. There's nothing worse than getting stumped in a softlock like I did, but hopefully this video will help other people avoid that kind of problem in the future. And doesn't it just look amazing? I thought there would've even bee a little more room here for some dinosaur education if they wanted to go that far. I don't know much about dinos and whether or not the enemies were in their correct postulated habitats, but it was neat seeing a game with this kind of focus! Thanks for indulging me!
Welp, this is one to add to the ROM hoard purely due to its obscurity and interesting premise. Also, I find it very ironic that a dinosaur can cast a meteor spell. Lol. And yeah, the magic item system definitely sounds... poorly thought out. Good idea on paper, but if it makes softlocking yourself *that* easy, well, that kinda speaks for itself. :/
The irony of dinos casting meteor was not lost on me, haha I hope you enjoy the game when you play it. As long as you're thinking a lot about the magic pickups, I think you'll be okay.
i don't know if this totally negates the softlock issue, but you are able to change from the Pterodactyl into a different dino even up in the sky, so you can fall through the elemental items but you are unable to change back until you are on ground.
You definitely can do that. I tried to bring the 6th dino to all the hard-to-reach places, but the problem was that there were some in the subarea up where you fight the pterodactyl's boss that you can't access after you beat it (and don't have the final dino at that point anyway), and I missed a bunch in the water :( But yeah... you can definitely do what you said so long as there's a safe place to land down below.
Ah, refreshing to see a more true to Dinosaur life modeled game. To think that some claim they were just big birds who only ate nuts and seeds. That's not majestic at all.
@@hungrygoriya I remember not getting very far on it as a kid, but I always kept coming back to it. Also the music has no business being as good as it is 😂
I always get this game mixed up with the "Disney's Dinosaurs" game. I believe I first saw this game last year at Games Done Quick and was kinda impressed how this game had flown under my radar.
@@hungrygoriya it might have been from the ESA (European Speedrun Assembly) I don't remember exactly. Great video you made though. I always enjoy you style and editing
@@hungrygoriya I shall be looking forward to that :) One game I would love to hear your opinion on sometime would be Animorphs on the Game Boy. I couldn't help but think of that game while watching this :)
Thanks for introducing me to this game, I love it! That said, do you happen to know what the "SPE" and "RES" stats stand for? I'm assuming "Special Attack" and "Resistance", but since I don't have the manual I have no way of knowing for sure. Also, where did you find the pages from the manual that are shown in the video?
I wish I knew! A friend actually had a copy of the manual and photographed a few pages for me. He hasn't uploaded it to the internet yet since it has a glued bound spine instead of staples, and he'd have to dismantle it to scan it. If I ever get my hands on a copy, I'll definitely upload it. I'm glad you're enjoying the game despite some of the mystery that surrounds it.
@@hungrygoriya Thanks, and I actually think the mystery is part of what inspires me to play it (I'm weird like that)! I also just learned that in order to cast the Level 2 versions of your Element Spells, your "RES" must be at least 20, 25, and 30 (for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd spell in each of the 4 element categories), and for Level 3 spells it must be at least 35, 40, and 45. Just in case you (or anyone else) was curious about that. For example, to cast Lv 1 Fireball, you need at least 5 fire elements, but for Lv 2/3 you also need at least 20/35 RES respectively. To cast Lv 1 Life Spring, you need at least 10 water elements, but for Lv 2/3 you also need at least 25/40 RES respectively. And to cast Lv 1 Earthquake, you need 15 leaf elements, but for Lv 2/3 you also need at least 30/45 RES respectively.
Okay, the fact that the characters take about a sixth of the screen by themselves probably implies this is a very clumsy platformer, but everything else seems quite cool.
I read about this game in an old Pocket Gaming Monthly magazine, but I thought it was a straight pokemon clone. I'm glad I didn't try it because that platforming looks not fun.
I started collecting GB/GBC RPGs a few years ago and I asked a friend for some suggestions since he has deeper experience with some game libraries than me, and he mentioned Dinosaur'us. I looked up some gameplay and was instantly intrigued by how different this was from most other RPGs I've played and found a copy on eBay not too long later.
Maybe the lack of healing items and hellish platforming are commentary on the dinosaurs' survivability... this is pro-human propaganda at its best. Looks great, wish you had a playthrough on youtube!
It has its highs and lows, yes... I liked it overall, even with the terrible platforming at the volcano part. It could've used a little more polish to make it great.

As for gameboy, Action Man: Search for Base X is another weird metroidvania type game, incredibly good soundtrack to boot (The Ruins level has the best song from my memory)
Great video btw, it was a nice jab of nostalgia :)
I wish there were more dinosaur themed games being made these days
There really aren't too many... I agree.
That apostrophe in the title is really bugging me though.
EDIT: NVM, European exclusive.
Love this!!
Yup, I had the same elements problem, I freaked out, i was very young and it was very hard to reach T-Rex
Yeah I got all the way to that fight and gave it everything I had, and failed :( I'm sorry you also had the same problem. It's such an oversight.
That dude also seems to enjoy trying to find the hidden gems in the library - he just put up a(nother) great video on Wayforward's gravity-flipping sidescroller "Wendy: Every Witch Way." Maybe you guys should collaborate sometime; see who can find the more interesting title buried in the GB/GBC library XD
for sure the Platforming is Tough & the Battle system as well
Oh yeah... sometimes I'd get into a battle and get killed right away.
The irony of dinos casting meteor was not lost on me, haha
I hope you enjoy the game when you play it.
Giant birds are lovely but I do like the idea of the dinosaurs I grew up reading about in my video games.
This game was my absolute jam!
I liked it a lot once I had it all figured out!
@@hungrygoriya I remember not getting very far on it as a kid, but I always kept coming back to it. Also the music has no business being as good as it is 😂
@@mungulor I agree with you completely about the soundtrack. The Game Boy and Game Boy Colour have some of the best tunes!
I always get this game mixed up with the "Disney's Dinosaurs" game.
I believe I first saw this game last year at Games Done Quick and was kinda impressed how this game had flown under my radar.
I would love to see a speedrun of this. I'll have to check through their video library for it! It's a fun game for sure.
@@hungrygoriya it might have been from the ESA (European Speedrun Assembly)
I don't remember exactly.
Great video you made though. I always enjoy you style and editing
@@captainnintendo Too kind! I have another Game Boy review on the way that should be out in the next day or two. Thanks so much for watching :)
@@hungrygoriya I shall be looking forward to that :)
One game I would love to hear your opinion on sometime would be Animorphs on the Game Boy.
I couldn't help but think of that game while watching this :)
@@captainnintendo Very cool! I don't think I currently have that one but I will keep an eye out for it. Thanks for the suggestion!
I loved this game as a kid, never beat the last boss tho
Did you run into the same problem I did? It was a really fun game!
Someone please shows this to Dino Diego
This person sounds like they'd be into a dinosaur game!
Okay, the fact that the characters take about a sixth of the screen by themselves probably implies this is a very clumsy platformer, but everything else seems quite cool.
There's some clumsiness to a few areas. It's definitely worth a playthrough though!
I read about this game in an old Pocket Gaming Monthly magazine, but I thought it was a straight pokemon clone. I'm glad I didn't try it because that platforming looks not fun.
It's definitely not the best platforming out there, but it's not horrendous except for that one volcano part. That area can go back to hell.
reminds me of evo
A little bit eh? Definitely some similar themes for sure. I had fun with EVO.
The Land Before Time Shippuden
How did you find this gem?
I started collecting GB/GBC RPGs a few years ago and I asked a friend for some suggestions since he has deeper experience with some game libraries than me, and he mentioned Dinosaur'us. I looked up some gameplay and was instantly intrigued by how different this was from most other RPGs I've played and found a copy on eBay not too long later.
Oh that is so cool! It's always nice to find different games from friends, especially such strange ones like this. Loved your review!
@@totemlordreviews7242 Having friends into these more obscure titles has been a blessing!
Maybe the lack of healing items and hellish platforming are commentary on the dinosaurs' survivability... this is pro-human propaganda at its best. Looks great, wish you had a playthrough on youtube!
Yeah, it definitely could be a quiet commentary on the ruthlessness of the period.
This game seems neat... but... also kind of bullshit.
It has its highs and lows, yes... I liked it overall, even with the terrible platforming at the volcano part. It could've used a little more polish to make it great.
@@hungrygoriya Yeah, you still sold it pretty well.
