Sometimes homesteading/farmsteading can be more expensive but the knowledge that you have of knowing where your food comes from is priceless so don’t sell the idea of raising your short. Thanks for sharing your experience and hope y’all have a blessed weekend Kristin.
Oh my gosh, that's awesome!!! I would definitely say 300+ pounds is worth the money!! I need to get a cow lol. Thank you for doing this video, Kristin! Very helpful😊
Kendra!!! It was fun for a while, until we started jumping fences to escape him... I guess he liked the way we were jumping because he started doing the same. lol... Knew right then freezer camp was in his future.
Hi Kristin! Interesting information, thank you for sharing the process. Wow 3 freezers full. Are you going to sell any of the meat, even to friends or locals? Everything you said makes sense and I see the pros and cons.
Great video! I see some of the comments talking about the expense. It is expensive at once but if you figure the price of buying that amount of meat at the store you would be floored at what it would cost. Y’all raising it is much cheaper than buying it as well. Plus when you raise it you know everything he was fed.
Hey hey! I've heard of people pooling their funds to purchase a whole cow, but never saw all the cuts of meat they got. This is pretty cool plus the fat and soup bones on the side.
My thoughts are even if the cost is the same or more, for one, you know what went into the meat by feeding the cow yourself...also, you have now gained a lot of knowledge as well as a relationship with the processor and a baseline for the future. Plus with all those soup bones and extras you get lots of collagen which people pay a premium for when they buy the powder form. Anyway, great video...thanks for sharing.
Great information! Thanks for sharing...I would definitely have to buy the meat but I would not have enough space! I only have 1 stand up deep freezer and 2 refrigerators. So maybe a half cow would be better for me 🤔
We have 3 freezers for this reason. 😊 however the last cow we bought 2 years ago we got the tongue .. I need a good recipe for that. I'm kinda scared to eat it too. Lol cause the cows, a friend raised years ago, they loved to lick my hands and their tongs were rough like a cats almost. 😄 Did you do porterhouse house steaks also? Great video Kristin 👍
Shannon, cow tongue... interesting... I would assume the outer layer would need to be removed... I believe we did get a few porterhouse steaks. We were thinking we needed another freezer but luckily everything fit. 🐮
Chelsie, originally, we were not planning on sending him to freezer camp but he just got way too dangerous and aggressive, it took many times of us jumping the fence (he also started jumping the fence) to escape him to come to terms with this decision. I couldn't/wasn't going to sell our problem so he could become someone else's problem... I really wish it would've worked out where we could have kept him.
"you're gonna need a bigger freezer" (in the voice of Roy Scheider) ua-cam.com/video/QT9BeGNnCqw/v-deo.html 🤣 Great information thank you. looks like you are going to be good on meat for a little while.
He came to our farm with his Jersey mama... It cost $588 to process but thousands to feed, house and secure. Way more economical to buy your beef from a farm than raise it.... We enjoyed the process and will do it again someday.

Yes, knowing where your food comes from is very important and would be the main reason we would do it again. Thanks, Tony for stopping by.
Great video, Kristin!
Knowing what you fed that bull and everything you put into raising your own meat is everything! 311 pounds is fantastic!
If we would've waited, we would've got more meat, but the danger factor outweighed more meat. I'm happy with the 311lbs. 😊
@@BellasWhisperFarmstead oh absolutely! I'd be happy too!
Thanks for the info here. That is a LOT of meat! 🥩 Thanks for the mention of the freezer space needed also.
Yes, the freezer space is something I should've thought of... Better to watch me not think about it so others can/will be prepared.
Nice video Kristin! This was interesting to watch. Thanks for sharing....that's a lot of meat!! 🙂

Hey Kristin very affordable to do so . Because you can spend over $500 in one month buying from the grocery store. But I’m glad you got the experience
Marlene, we will definitely be doing this again, not sure when.. $500 for 3xx pounds of is a great deal!

Very true! The up-front cost isn't cheap (fencing, barn, cows, seed, feed) the processing of the meat is the cheapest part.

Thats alot of beef!
Prez!! So much beef!!! 🐮
You have to remember the difference in taxes too because of having the bull and take it into account when calculating the expense.
Thanks for visiting
I wonder how long it would all last you?
I'm hoping it last a good while... maybe a year if we are lucky!
the tongue is against the law. Wow. My mom use to get that all the time at the deli when I was kid in the 60s
I'm not sure if that's a new law... I have seen it in certain meat markets in the past...
Why is the head illegal when thee organs ok?
The only organ we got from our cow was the liver... I think it has something to do with mad cow.
There's alot of beef meat
