That’s a Hendrix thing. That’s where John Mayer got it. Those barre chord voicings with the thumb are often called Hendrix chords

He starts by playing a D chord, then just adds the pinky to the 5th string 4th fret. It's technically a C#. Then plays a G chord to an E for the bridge. He alternates through that with the little guitar lick in the middle. Took me a second to figure it out, but it's masterfully done.
Btw, how do you learn to play this song? By ear or by reading the chords?
Most of this was off ear. The bridge section I had to look for a few references to see what was going on.
