I had a pour of the sweet wheat and it was the easiest drinking bourbon I've ever had. Not my favorite or anything but I would keep it stocked if it was available because there is definitely avtime and place for something that drinks that easy.
For what it’s worth, scents on the olfactory (smell) can linger and influence gustation (taste) Considering olfaction accounts for ~50-60% taste I wouldn’t be surprised that the coconut notes from the second glass influenced taste of the 1st glass.
Love your videos! I only wish when you edit together the video you let the viewer know which one you're talking about..i listen to the 'on the nose', pallet etc and we don't know what you're talking about. By the time you reveal it I am not sure which description was which. Again love the videos.. Fellow Ohioan (Toledo)
I agree; it would be preferable to do comparisons where both bottles have the same amount of air time. I find many bottles change a lot with some air, and, for me at least, they always get better.
Weller SR was the first whiskey I bought when I first got into whiskey. Bought it on price alone ($27 2 years ago). Just m my first bottle of 1792 Sweet Wheat today
Jason. I love the barrel proof and idea of hunting. Im torn. I can get the EC barrel proof easier and cheaper than Stagg Jr. The stagg will run me about $115 here in CA. I can get the EC for around $80. I can also snag a bottle of EH Taylor small batch for $199. Where do i spend the money?? I love sweet bourbon and rich flavor. Help?????
I wouldn't pay 200 for EH Taylor small batch in my opinion. Thats way overpriced for the small batch. The EC for 80 isn't to far off retail. Stagg jr for 115 is just dependent on how bad you want a bottle. Its obviously overpriced at that. But that said those are harder to come by so really just what your willing to pay. I find StaggJr to be very rich sweetness flavor bomb personally. Good luck!
Just picked up 1792 Sweet Wheat and 1792 12 year. Cracked open Sweet Wheat and the nose is extremely fruit forward and pleasant, easy drinking, sweet a little dry mid and finish but overall I liked it especially for the price point, I'll have to revisit it in a few weeks to see how it opens up. Looking forward to 1792 12 year... Cheers
@@TheMashandDrum man when you talked about the fruity cereal notes I was convinced you were talking about the Sweet Wheat. I get that kind of note all day long.
Great double bass! Have to say these are two I've never been able to get, because of allocation. Could've gotten my hands on the Weller last night. Was at a fundraising auction, but the bid went far too high for what I would be willing to pay. Did come home with a 1792 BiB and a 1792 Full Proof barrel pick, though. 😉
Good choice for a review. Was anticipating you would pick the Weller. Got the Sweet wheat last year for wife's birthday and I somehow expected more out of it (twice the price). Weller is my wife's favorite go to and is easy to keep on the shelf while in Kentucky. Funny how both are hard to find here in Cali. Cheers.
I had the exact same experience. I finally found sweet wheat on the shelf and had it along with Weller SR and the 1792 ended up tasting muted after the first sip. Double bass suggestion: booker’s tagalong (or any) v. little book 4 (or any LBs)
I like Weller Special Reserve when I'm looking for a good wheated bourbon and normally switch between it or Buffalo Trace. Weller Special Reserve used to be on sale for $30 for a 1.75 L bottle around here (pre-supply chain issues). It's now about $40 standard for that size. Still pretty cheap and readily available. Most people also enjoy it even if they're not big into whiskey.
Living in ohio we’ve been spoiled when it comes to Weller. So much so my green labels collect dust because I’m flush with red label (Weller Antique)which is a fantastic pour in my opinion. And I haven’t cracked my sweet wheat because it’s so allocated locally and short of driving to Michigan I probably won’t see a replacement. This review confirms some suspicions I’ve had though eventually I’ll do the comparison for myself. Someday 😆 Thanks Jason Happy Holidays Brother! 🥃
Great video, Jason. Thanks. I predicted this outcome and, based on your notes, correctly guessed A was the Weller. I was able to get a bottle of Sweet Wheat about a year ago (it's really hard to find here in NoCal) and was quite disappointed, especially for the price - $40. I much prefer the WSR but I've never gotten coconut from it lol.
This tells me all I need to know about the Sweet Wheat. WSR is "just fine" but not worth chasing or overpaying. Sweet Wheat is a pass. I do like these Double Bass comparisons.
1792 Sweet Wheat has gotten rare around here to the tune of $100 - $129 IF you can find one. Unfortunately Weller Reserve is almost as scarce, but usually in the $50 - $70 range so apparently the Weller has become the "relative bargain" of the two. 2 years ago, the Weller Reserve was fairly common at $35 - $40 and the Sweet Wheat findable at $50ish. WTF !???
Wow, that's a surprise. I've never had the sweet wheat but just figured you can't get any easier to sip than WSR. Sweet Wheat is overpriced, $100, and hard to find in Cali anyway. I still find WSR for $30, $26 if I'm lucky. Cheers!
Man I didn’t expect that either
I had a pour of the sweet wheat and it was the easiest drinking bourbon I've ever had. Not my favorite or anything but I would keep it stocked if it was available because there is definitely avtime and place for something that drinks that easy.
Crazy. Special reserve is readily available 80% of the time. Funny that it is allocated since it is so readily available in Texas.
I get a green apple nose on the weller
try living in North Carolina where we cannot get Weller and even if we try and buy it online they are not allowed to ship here.
Cheers and happy holidays

Great video. Weller SR is my favorite everyday sipper. I need to try Sweet Wheat but it's alway out of stock...

I know it's over a year ago....but you are surprised?

I used too do that and then I got feedback that folks want to know at the end. Lol. I think it's a straight divide.
Put it in the notes and then those of us who want to know can look and see.
Yea I feel you about availability I missed the round of sweat wheat here in Ohio hoping to grab one in the next couple weeks when I go to Indiana
George Remus straight bourbon whiskey (94 proof) vs. Smoke Wagon small batch (100 proof)
Is that a red Blatons? I cant even find that on google if so
I want to see Weller SR against standard Makers Mark and Weller 107 vs Makers Mark CS.
How about Makers CS vs. Weller 107?
Wow!
I found that my Sweet Wheat improved after being opened for a few weeks. Do you find that Wheaters need some time to open up like toasted bourbons do?
I agree; it would be preferable to do comparisons where both bottles have the same amount of air time. I find many bottles change a lot with some air, and, for me at least, they always get better.
Woodford makes a really good wheater! Cheer's
excellent review. wsr is a great easy sipper. i always buy it when available.
I know I've already commented a bunch of suggestions, buuuuut...
Kentucky Owl Rye vs. Michter's Barrel Strength Rye
Michters wins that one pretty easily imo
Anytime someone says "bubble gum" or "banana" I'm guessing that's the 1792
Never seen the 1792 SW in NY but the Weller is somewhat available. Though I've never seen for less than $70 w seems silly. Would anyone pay that?
once saw an old label weller sr for $70 in Queens awhile back, but couldnt bring myself to pick it up..
@@kevinpoblete3363 Is it too late to go back? 😁. Are you still in NY? Where do you shop for bourbon?
Much too high s price
Man, can't find either in VA!

Ah, yea, I live in Boston and have looked for 1792 Sweet Wheat for the last 3 years but haven't found a copy.
I’m convinced you mislabeled your glasses 😂
Totally thought the sweet wheat would give a better showing
@@TheMashandDrum man when you talked about the fruity cereal notes I was convinced you were talking about the Sweet Wheat. I get that kind of note all day long.
Agree completely. The sweet wheat is pretty boring.
Awesome review, Jason! I love seeing this comparison since I NEVER have seen that 1792 Sweet Wheat in person. So hard to find!
Picking up a bottle of Sweet Wheat tonight.. I was already thinking this would be a fun blind! Great job as always.

Sweet Wheat is one of the most underwhelming and flat bourbons I’ve ever had, Weller SE is pretty basic but still an easy everyday sipper.
Nice double barrel! Watching you at Repeal Day Expo with Barrell Spirits
I had my choice between Sweet Wheat and the 12 year last weekend... glad i went with the 12!

I dislike WSR and traded both my sweet wheats for OWA. Love OWA
Wow, I’ve been hunting 1792 and I have several Wellers. Now I know never to pay extra for 1792.
Drinking the Sweet Wheat while watching the video. The aftertaste reminds me of corn on the cob. Not a big fan of it
I will definitely not be buying the 1792. I have a bottle of the WSR and I think it’s the most boring bottle of bourbon I own. Thanks for the review.
It’s almost like BT is good at what they do.
Not a fan of either really
Sweet Wheat with a good cigar tastes like banana cream cheesecake. I prefer the sweet wheat over weller.

Special reserve just isn’t good to me at all
Easy to drink, with little depth... sounds like a Buffalo trace product.
WHISKEY CHEERS 😎😎😎😎
WSR sucks. IMO. I guess I’ll stay away from Sweet Wheat
Weller for the win, nice! Seems like a no brainer but have you done 1910 and Woodford Reserve double oaked?
Wheated Bourbon always tastes very bland to me

Bruh, where do u see the sweet wheat sitting on shelves at srp? Seriously….
New York
Just got one today for $35 in Louisiana
So, would it be advisable, when tasting multiple bourbons, to take a sip of water in between tastes? IDK. I'm really new to bourbon.
I would agree at high proof bourbons but at only 90 proof it doesn't really matter to me personally.
clear glasses are better so we can see the bourbon.you do a great job reviewing thank you.
My wife gifted me the Weller a couple weeks ago, it is really great.
Sorry, I just don't understand the love(?) for SR. It finds a way to spoil the ice needed to kill it's taste.
It tastes ok, it just barely tastes like anything
