Incredible exploding Chinese insect (and human) killer. (with smoke)

  • It was just a matter of time before something exploded unintentionally, and here it is. A rather bizarre Chinese "Mosquito killer" that uses blue LEDs to attract the very rare species of mosquito that might actually be attracted to blue light (none) and zaps it with a 1.3kV electrified grid powered by the most shonky voltage multiplier I've ever seen. I mean, completely random capacitors like some bizarre high voltage pic 'n' mix of misfortune.
    So apart from giving me quite a zap when I innocently poked the grid on the unplugged unit with my test-finger (no trickle discharge at all) the unit went one better, and while I was randomly shorting the live (and directly referenced to the mains) grid with a screwdriver, it made a loud pop and smoke started coming out of it.
    I then decided to film it smouldering seductively and it blew up completely. The iPad seems to have missed the magnitude of the actual flash and explosion to a degree. It was awesome.
    I might actually buy another of these to see it blow up again.

      @sjoeee 8 років тому +10

      +Wolfy Wolf In fact, it's more likely to be how the flash of light from the pop looks when captured on a camera with a rolling shutter. The flash happens when the sensor is scanning the top of the frame, but is gone by the time the sensor's scan has reached 1/5 through, and so only a small portion of the image is lit up.

    • @JackLee123
      @JackLee123 8 років тому +3

      I think its because the camera has a rolling shutter. That means the flash was so quick, that the camera only caught it on the top part of a single frame. But i might be completely wrong.

    For shorting capacitors out i do always use a sponge which is only wet on the downside. Easy and fast contact to all solder points. Doesn't even need saltwater, just tap water is sufficient.

    • @topilinkala1594
      @topilinkala1594 Рік тому

      Tap water is salt water, eg. it has lots of ions in it. Purest water can be found at powerplants in the steamy part that goes trough the turbine to turn the generators. But even that is not true pure water. There's two physical/chemical effects working there: 1st any impurities in the water will form glass deposits on the turbine blades deforming them and causing all kind of havoc. 2nd pure water is acidic, because autocatalyst in water produces OH- and H+ ions and H+ ions being light are more active than the OH- ions. This corrodes the turbine blades and causes all kind of havoc. So it's a lose-lose situation.

    They probably bought capacitors from several factories that had failed quality control. Factories usually sell off failed electrical products so that they can be recycled, since they often have valuable metals inside. However, the ones that work somewhat are resold and only one that are completely dead are recycled.

    Well, I guess Chinese have an overpopulation problem, so they don't care much for a few casualties using their ingenious inventions.
    By the way, since you are doing this highly informative tests, did your life insurance company already increase your bill?

      Actually, the Chinese population is shrinking now. Since 1991 the Total Fertility Rate in China has been below 2.1, the "replacement rate" at which the population will stabilize with normal mortality. Except for Africa and a couple Middle Eastern countries, the births around the world are below the replacement rate. Since 1970, the US population grew from 205 million to 328 million through immigration (mostly legal, mostly from Asia) even as births in the US fell below the replacement rate.

    Another danger - All it takes is for a large moth to get trapped and its wing sticking out becomes an exposed live contact.
    But then again, maybe it's designed to self destruct when an oversized insect gets zapped. ;-)

    The zapper in our kitchen is I think 20 volts, and that's more than enough to down the vast majority of insects (maybe even all) and humans touching them is ill-advised. This seems overkill.

    What's worse, is that mosquitoes are not attracted to blue light. All you'll catch is other insects. some who might prey on mosquitoes.

    I have tried purchase this thing maybe a 2 years ago.
    We had inside only PCB for LEDs and metal plates was just directly connected to the 230Volt mains.
    I destructed it immidiately and put to the e-waste container.

    In the USA in the Pacific NorthWest, we have the rare mosquito. I have a US version that uses a tube instead of LED's. Started years ago using one when tent camping to clear out the tent by running one with an inverter for about 10 minutes to completely clear the tent for the night. Still have the unit in the motorhome for the same use. I would like to find a US version with LED's instead of the tube.

    Totally expected an exploding Chinese insect. Would have been a bit out of character but not too far given the variety of items that have been addressed (and chemical rxns are electrical too).

    The blurb on the back of the pack reminds me of Japanese instruction manuals from the 1970s :-P
    Chinese "Engrish" was far better when they admitted that they didn't know English and didn't try to make it look like they did (and so ended up paying an Anglophone Hong Kong national to properly translate their blurbs).

    Someone was most like paid to find the least expensive way to get the resulting volt out and light frequency (researching how much it takes to fry an insect, the wavelength that attracts them the most, least expensive LED source as well as cap & diode sources). China tends to not have pride in providing quality products, thereby insuring continued income from satisfied consumers.
