The volume of these perfectly innocent insects that where lured in by the light to be zapped and fall into the "death tray" underneath that needs frequent emptying will no doubt provide positive feedback to the owner that this device works great. Disease carrying flies never bother with it, preferring the bin or any food left out or even a roast left resting in the oven (they find their way around the back and up and in). Also the dog shit and cat shit from the neighbourhood. Utterly useless devices. I tend to encourage house spiders instead. Keep the fresh webs and dust away the old ones. ;)
Hi BC, Love the video, still giggling about the "how else are they Going to learn" comment, that is exactly how I got edumikated about lektrizidy. Hopi's hop up on ebay now and then, mine both have data logging software and USB connectivity, they have done away with the speaker terminals so no need for the deathdaptor. I'm surprised by the Hopi readings, I must try mine for accuracy at low currents. Thanks for another great teardown.
Not that it matters because the whole unit is sealed up with plastic, but the one side of the zapper that is connected to mains, it would have little if any voltage if it were connected to the neutral leg. BUT, not sure if you have a neutral leg with your high mains voltage. In the US, we have three wires coming in, two hot and out of phase giving 240 volts between them with a neutral (close to ground) being electrically between them (practically ground altho it is not for use as a ground (it may have up to 3 volts on it) which gives you 120 volts between it and either hot. The standard power mains here is 240 volts which is split with a neutral into two (and out of phase) 120 volt circuits.
Mine arrived today from Bangood, very bright! :) However, it doesn't seem to do the dimming thing. First switch on and you get bug zapper and full brightness (I assume - it is very bright.) Next on/off - same brightness and Bug zapper. Next on/off - bug zapper only. The pcb looks identical. (I checked for a solder bridge on the chip - none.) Re: Chinese translation via google on the IOM - Have you tried using a VPN app to spoof your location? Just a thought :)
Is there a polarity standard for the ES fitting? It would perhaps make sense for the screw part to be Neutral, as if anyone was changing a bulb without knowing the power was off, it would be easier to make contact with that part. On that assumption, it would be better for that side to be the direct connection to the grid.
May be Google translate can do that translation properly now, but just thought to roughly translate the data sheet bottom 6 lines, it says something like: Typical application: R1=R2=10O when 0.3s

The question I wanted answering is "does it actually kill flies?". I've tried several of these Chinese bug zappers including the fancy spherical one that Clive tested which sucks them in, but none of them attract houseflies. They only attract small moths during the night (we don't have mosquitoes around here).

KJBowen2204 My first ever soldering iron was an Antex XS25 which I got when I was 15 - the year was 1984! I still have it and it works fine. You may struggle with certain soldering jobs due to the relatively low power of 25 Watts, especially with the trend of building large ground planes into PCB's. You may find a Chinese import temperature regulated iron gives better results and spares (including tips) are very cheap too.
Clive, do you have any recommendations for really good OTA TV antennas? I suspect I have a neighbor screwing up my reception and it sounds like this antenna actively blocks out cell phone interference (would like to know for sure how good it is before I buy it and the reviews I find appear to be by non-electronic minded people who don't even know the meaning of a "directional antenna" as the ad claims). Can you do one? If not does any one on YT do any? My old analog 18 foot antenna is not cutting it. Thanks
The biting ones (mostly female mosquitoes) are mostly attracted to the CO2 we breathe out, with other factors, like body heat and smell, having some effect too, but CO2 is good bait. Some good bug zappers take advantage of this, or you can add an acid to a base (vinegar and bicarbonate of soda is a classic safe one) to get the same gas to attract mosquitoes.
The ideal power factor is 1 (unity) that means the current and voltage are in perfect sync. Usually only achieved with simple resistive loads like tungsten lamps and heaters.
i've had this light inside above my front door for about 2 years. i dont think it's caught very many mosquitos. the cold white isn't the greatest either. it acts a little wonky when i use the dimmer switch, but it does work to an extent. i've never seen the other colors - i have a suspicion they dont really manufacture them
What video editing software are you using on android? And can it cut and join clips. Im using shotcut freeware on pc , but it requires me to mess about getting the footage from my phone to my pc .
The volume being low imo is not really a problem - as long as it is consistent. We can just turn up the volume if needed. Other channels often have some really loud sound in between so you would blast your ears if you made it louder.
ABaumstumpf You can only turn up so far... A lot of other channels I watch are too low, and I struggle to hear them if I prop my phone/tablet in a stand or against a wall.
"Kill A Watt" meters are everywhere.... not sure how accurate they are but if you're near a harbor freight you can score one same day no shipping if you really need one
Power factor is to do with devices having capacitance or inductance, rather than being pure resistors. Inductive and capacitive loads in an AC circuit cause the current and voltage waveforms to get out of synch with each other by a certain angle. The power factor value is a measure of how much the current and voltage waveforms differ . PF=cos(theta), where theta is the angle by which current differs from voltage. A power factor of 1 would mean that the load is purely resistive or that any inductance and capacitance cancel each other out. You can also start to get into things like reactive and apparent power that can affect circuit design. It's not usually an important consideration for household devices, but is important for industrial applications because power companies don't like low power factors.

put a bunch of neon indicator lamps in that empty case, or a bunch of those flicker candle things, it look pretty cool
I like the lamp holder I got the orange one !
"Hello, Help Desk. Have you tried turning it off and on ... and off and on .... and off and on again?"
Audio
As far ad I know the Audio is ok.
13:35 I don't understand way. Have you tryed set your taged langurage to standars english en/en or amarican english US/en.?
22:55 They one that bite are atractive mostly to Co²
The bitey bastards are drawn in by carbon dioxide. I've seen good traps created by a cut in half bottle with vinegar and baking soda in.
But if the bottle's cut in half surely the vinegar and baking soda would fall out?
And the flicker with heat
The light of the LED looked more like it's warm-white, but on the packaging it said it's 6500K cold-white. So was this just a color distortion from the camera, or were they actually warm-white?
It's a cold white.
Thanks for the reply, Clive! So I guess your camera does some unfavourable "color correction"?
I can't find any Hopi meters on eBay but Aliexpress has them for £42.
splendid video clive
Are there any circuit apps like everycircuit? Everycircuit kind of sucks..
The question I wanted answering is "does it actually kill flies?". I've tried several of these Chinese bug zappers including the fancy spherical one that Clive tested which sucks them in, but none of them attract houseflies. They only attract small moths during the night (we don't have mosquitoes around here).
In a way attracting the little gold moths is good as otherwise they might feast on clothing.
My clothing is all made from recycled pop bottles.
We have a huge insect extinction but bug zappers aren't illegal.
Do they make zappers with infrared LEDs?
You could swap 'em.
_You_ could swap 'em. Most of us are stuck with what we get. ;)
Dunno what you've done, but the audio is so much better in this video compared to others recently. Well done. EDIT just heard your comment about UA-cam's new edit function. It works!
HOPI meters are still available on aliexpress by the look of it.
Whats your opinion on the antex xs25?
KJBowen2204
My first ever soldering iron was an Antex XS25 which I got when I was 15 - the year was 1984!
Thanks
What software are you trying out Clive?
AndroVid.
IR or even just a warm resistor would do a better job at attracting biting bugs. They find you by both scent and body heat
“Stick the fingers in, stick the fingers in, didn't get a shock; it's discharged...”
one thing that attracts biting insects is a compound called 1-octen-3-ol, found in sweat and the oils produced by the skin
So what's a good power factor and bad I have a kill a watt but no instructions
The ideal power factor is 1 (unity) that means the current and voltage are in perfect sync. Usually only achieved with simple resistive loads like tungsten lamps and heaters.
i've had this light inside above my front door for about 2 years. i dont think it's caught very many mosquitos. the cold white isn't the greatest either. it acts a little wonky when i use the dimmer switch, but it does work to an extent. i've never seen the other colors - i have a suspicion they dont really manufacture them
It's definitely not dimmer compatible.
@@bigclivedotcom oh yeah, i figured as much
Hi there Clive, I just have one question. How high is the voltage/current when the zapper circuit is triggered?
+dandel351 When shunted the current is limited by the capacitor in series, so it's very low.
Ok thanks for the reply Clive. I'm loving your videos mate! Cheers.
I wish Clive used the power meter that he used to use in his older videos. The flickery HOPI meter is not meant for videos.
"Chinglish". That's a good one!
Clive... everytime you increase the exposure, the HOPI meter stops hopping !!
What video editing software are you using on android? And can it cut and join clips. Im using shotcut freeware on pc , but it requires me to mess about getting the footage from my phone to my pc .
AndroVid Pro. It lets you merge (join) clips and trim them too.
bigclivedotcom will see how i do with the free version , befor splashing out £1.89 on pro.
they sell those in a chain store in the us called freds and looked very similer
Don't change the audio
Is it too loud now?
no it is perfect, he meant don't change it back the way it used to sound.
It's perfect! It's wonderful! *insert more positive adjectives here*
The volume being low imo is not really a problem - as long as it is consistent. We can just turn up the volume if needed.
Other channels often have some really loud sound in between so you would blast your ears if you made it louder.
ABaumstumpf
You can only turn up so far... A lot of other channels I watch are too low, and I struggle to hear them if I prop my phone/tablet in a stand or against a wall.
I HAVE ONE OF THESE! I LOVE IT! I LOVE CLIVE!
"Kill A Watt" meters are everywhere.... not sure how accurate they are but if you're near a harbor freight you can score one same day no shipping if you really need one
I understand volts amps watts etc but could you explain power factor plz
swansealoaf1999 Watts = power factor X volts X amps
Actually John is correct that in a complex load Watts=pf*V*I.
Apparent power (VA) is simply V*I
My brother has one of these he loves it I love that I now know how it works
We have tv the size of his calculator. Awesome video
How else will they learn! 🤔🙄🤗
9:06... There is nothing wrong with the Audio volume although a bit less Bass and a bit more Treble wouldn't hurt... ;)
Forget high voltage circuits for killing insects, just do it like i did, stick a few leds in a tilapia tank and they will eat all night!
Killy stuff, noice!
*boops your nose*
Louder Audio - presumably giving Richer Sounds a run for it's money :)
The PCB of that bulb is Direct on board ..the aluminium PCB is mirical and dimmable
Bug Clive!... boom boom!...... (i'll get my coat...)
#TartanMainsSymbol!
