Audi TT Mk2 Window Regulator Door Card Removal

- My window regulator broke on my Audi TT MK2 and this is how I tackled the removal of it. It was my first attempt at it and it went smooth. Please be aware of the torque which the window glass is held in place when removing the bolts as these are not very tight and should be tightened to the same/similar pressure when refitting to prevent the glass from shattering.

Life saver just watched your video and smashed it out in an hour
So happy to hear it helped you.
Well done !! What a change to have an informative dialogue and helpful visual aid, instead of the usual life stories before any work is carried out !!
Excellent video, makes the job 100x easier knowing step by step what to do.
Ahh. Bonus small speaker with the Bose system.
Cable replacement sounds tempting, as aftermarket regulator for me was tilted out by 2mm and is refusing to let the glass touch the vertical rubber just above the door (touches at top).
Top man for the video. Just fitted a new regulator to my tts using one from euro car parts. £65 all in. took me around a hour start to finish :)
Was it this one? Trying to work out what will be compatible but I have no clue...! www.eurocarparts.com/search/492443671?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIwazOqZj-2gIVpbDtCh2luA8mEAQYASABEgJVo_D_BwE
I saved $300 doing it myself by watching your vid! Thanks heaps!
Really appreciate your posting this knowledge on UA-cam...I pick up my 2012 TT from the dealer 30 Dec 2016 and have two years bumper-to-bumper warranty. However, this is my first car with a turbo so I've been reading on the feeding and care of such; first Audi too...soooo glad they have a timing chain instead of belt! Thanks again for all you do here!
Daniel Gaskell yeah my TFSI had a timing belt but I think the 3 litre ones may have a chain
2012 TFSI 2.0 litre...US spec but the engine should be the same....
Thanks for putting this up , it made my job easy
Very helpful video, thanks for sharing your knowledge
Thanks for the concise info. A great help
Drivers side last year passenger side next weekend, both times your video has been very helpful, £51 off eBay, same seller as last year.
Managed to get a new bolt 8 x 40 and nut which was perfect to create the spacing effect the the original double sided bolt performed
Your video was worth it weight with disassembly so thanks again
Awesome, glad you got it done
Thank for the help.
Nice vid!
Ah okay that's interesting, I think I may just hang on to the original part just in case then! However, so far, the replacement is working perfectly. Cheers
You're on Jamie Oliver's "5 things to do with..." playlist. Haha think whoever manages his channel added it by mistake
Thank you, helped me out😎
Thank you!
My Mk2 driver’s window went crunch some time ago and, after seeing this excellent video, I had every intention of repairing it myself but every time I was free and willing it was raining. Then the passenger side went, and as I was working away, and the missus was bleating over the phone, I told her to drop it in at the garage that I always use on her way to work, and I would pay. It cost me £300 for both. Passenger side perfect, driver side shit: the window no longer drops enough when you open the door and therefore when you shut the door the glass hits the trim that runs along the top of the window compartment/roof. Sounds hideous when you are inside. When you shut the door the glass goes up a little bit though. Took it back the garage and they said there is nothing wrong with it!!!
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Have you taken door lock module off? my door won’t lock it opens and shuts using inside and outside handle but the indicators don’t blin’ on affected door on locking and the door doesn’t t lock. Other door and boot does. Thanks steve
Do you have a link for the listing on Ebay for the whole regulator? Most of the ones I'm seeing are over a 100 quid, whereas the cable is only 20ish..
Ref the airbag sensor, could you pull the fuse to stop it going off during all this work? Considering fixing mine myself, the regulator is £40. Bolton Audi are charging £165 for the repair, this is after a lot of intervention from Audi UK (It's £550 otherwise!) Wondering if it's worth the extra £125 to just pay them to do it :/
Excellent video and very well presented with good commentary.
I have ordered a new regulator from eBay and just wondering when I fit it if the window needs to be in a certain position or does it automatically detect the highest and lowest (top/bottom) position when the button is pressed?
Hey thanks. Yes, you do not need to set the window in a set position as the motor will know where it is but you will need to reset the motors memory. Turn the ignition on - don't start the engine switch the windows down and then straight back up when the windows are up release the switch momentarily pull the switches back up and hold for 3 to 5 seconds, then let the switches go and turn ignition off
persistrich okay many thanks again. New one arriving tomorrow.
Great vid but tell me did you slide the glass out of the door completely before removing the regulator? Just wondering if it’s easy to get it back in if you remove it due to the weather strip at the top? Thanks bud
Zippee2020 yes I did. It’s fairly easy to take out and slide back in.
Thanks for the video. It really helped me out a lot . I was wondering, I have a small even gap across the window and were it seals at the top. How do I correct/adjust it? Thanks
Daniel Chaves Daniel Chaves it is most likely in need of a reset. Turn ignition on, switch the windows down then switch them all the way up but keep the button pulling up for 3-5 seconds and that should reset them. Hope that helps
Okay I will give that a shot when I get home from work, if its not that I did find a forum thread about accessing these height adjustment screws when the window is all the way down, there is two holes on the bottom of the door that you can fit an allen wrench through to adjust the window height to make a tighter seal, so if this doesnt do the trick, I will give that a shot next.
Daniel Chaves yeah the Allen key jobby is really for a final fit if you are getting wind noise, if you have a gap I bet it’s the reset. The door needs to learn when to drop the glass when you pull the door handle so you can open it and then raise the glass when it’s closed. When you take the window out it forget this so needs to re learn!
okay I think I know what the issue is, there is some play in my window where I can pull it up and push it down so I dont believe I tightened it enough into the holders that hold the glass, do you have your glass laying completely flat against the bottom of the glass holders?
Daniel Chaves oh that’s a good question as it was a while ago since I made this vid but i do remember clamping the window back from the same position they were clamped as the clamp left witness marks. I think it was kinda central in the clamps
I could be wrong but it looks like the door card would come out if you slid it away from the front instead of popping it off as the clip looks slotted.? Also, that custom tool you made looks like there is a pin that could be pushed in instead so the clip comes out?
Give it a go your way and let me know how you get on
Hi, the new unit arrived and all was going well until I tried to fit the bottom left double sided bolt, removed from the old unit. I find the thread is too small on the new unit. The other three bolts/nuts are fine. Did you have any problem with that?
So frustrating as all was going so well!
Sorry for the late reply, funny enough I did buy a complete unit and found it was a pain to fit and eventually once fitted it didn't operate that well so I repaired my regulator with stainless wire, a kit I bought off eBay and never looked back
did you have any problems with the motor? mine lowers the window fine but will only go halfway and then stops?
Gethsemane have you tried resetting the window? If I remember correctly press the down button and hold for 3-5 seconds once the window drops then lift and hold for 3-5 when it’s at the top
@@persistrich thx for the quick reply. Yes tried that, window goes down ok but only goes part the way up. Its somewhat random, I managed to get it all the way up last night. its as if it doesn't know how high it needs to go up. its the same if the motor is in my hand or attached to the regulator.
Maybe a silly question but how did you identify it was the regulator and not the motor ?
EuroCarParts pattern regulator, click and collect price £73 inc VAT!
What year is your PURPLE MK II?
Daniel Gaskell it was a 2007
Did you end up buying a better quality cable than the poor one Audi fitted?
Frank Munro yes, I got one off eBay that is stainless. I did the other door using a replacement regulator but it was rubbish so I returned it and used another cable kit
