Must agree - no drama's. Now just over 15,000km on my '15 model with same spread of use as yours. 400km range out of 19 litre tank. 3 spring rates up on front and rear, plus 15/48 gearing - carries my 120kg and 20+kg luggage with ease.

In the USA we have a few emissions items that certainly help the environment and I'm grateful our esteem legislators drafted them into law to protect us from ourselves. I saved those bits in my bin for when the planet finally crumbles into catastrophe and I feel the need to conform.
A more amazing thing is that the 500 can be so light yet so reliable, despite the engine sounding like a box of rocks at times.
Love my 2015 and will ride it until it collapses into a pile beneath me from too many miles.
    Thanks Keith.

I love my 500exc and everything about it. It is my perfect bike. Frequent oil changes are a small price to pay for such a light-weight, do it all bike!
Ride to the trails, ride all day long, then ride home, all with the same bike. Can't beat that. Cheers

Mine has done less but harder hours. I’ve worn through two brake rotors and not that impressed with the rear brake. Come to think of it, on one high country descents without care I can get both ends to boil.
Had a lot of trouble with the suspension. The XPLORE forks with a heavier rider and rocks simply can’t do the job. Ok if you’re a flea weight and or slow but otherwise it’s an expensive mission to find something that works.
The engine has been wonderful, just as you say. Valve clearance checks but no changes. Just do the oil and filters, easy to work on.
When it was new it would constantly boil the radiator fluid. Changed it to that special radiator fluid, no issues since. They o fan kicks in when it should.
Still using stock battery after five years. Of course it needs the cold cranking procedure in the cold but has always started.
I put a one-way valve in the crank breather. It was a painful trip with deep water and drowning bikes. The 500 is not too bad in deep water but if you drowned it, it would suck a lung of water into the crank. Enough to make a huge white milky soup of walking home badness. Too much to boil off. The crank breather is low on the air box which does not help.
The 500 is viby through the pegs for road and touring work. Fine in small doses and what it mainly does. I really notice it after being on the 701.

I could not agree more. I am on my 3rd one. Last one (2019) i killed it at 38000km and 700hours. Best bike i owned and thats why i bought a 2022 the following day. Also if you have an Europe model which can be uncorked at the dealership no need to spend 800$ on a vortex or GET ecu. For the US it os mandatory to exploit this amazing engine. Oil change every 1500/2000km and clean air filter as often as you can.

@@NateSketchyNate I’m running 13/50. It’s a good ratio! I was running 12/48 for a while, but 1st through 3rd gears were almost useless on the road (definitely so for 1st and 2nd). 13/50 gives me enough range to actually get somewhere on the highway, and is still more than able to hold its own on the trail.
I was thinking of going to 13/49, but the trails near me aren’t swoopy at all… they’re technical as hell, so the ability to go slow is crucial.

I absolutely LOVE my 2018 KTM 500 EXC-F. I did install the Vortex ECU and it is amazing (I am in the US...so I had to deal with all the EPA/Smog requirements). The bike handles like a dream and does everything I ask of it. I also have a 2006 KTM 950 Adventure that I fully rebuilt and I still prefer the 500 for most of my travels/adventures. I also have the MOSKO Reckless 40 bags but added the 20L Stinger over the 8L Stinger that came with it. It works for me. Thanks for the videos you produce...I really enjoy watching them. @alteregoklause1694 I have a 2018 500 EXCF. I rode another with a vortex on the high map and it was more powereful than the stock ECU but not scary. It was between the high and low taco moto GET maps. I returned my GET due to it not working properly. I saved a lot of money and installed a Dobeck EJK. It solves all of the fueling problems and feels about the same as the vortex. Unless you desert race and need the most HP available save your money and get a Dobeck EJK piggy back tuner. You wont regret it.

Thanx for all the 500 EXC-F stuff! In Europe people just start to consider this as an (almost) perfect long distance travel bike due to all maintanance reservations you mentioned. Thus your experience and all comments here helps a lot!
However particular in germany we have serious registration problems as the bike is positioned as "only competition", KTM is not supportive and the only way is to de-tune it to 16 (!!) PS to be legal or max. 50PS in a "grey zone" (very expensive special permit) but without ANY further change allowed, NOTHING! So don´t call us lucky as australians anymore 😉
Not enough only few 3rd-party parts are available in EU...😪
You are really happy people in Australia, wunderfull landscapes, good bikes available and the right adventurous spirit everywhere👍

I built a 2015 500 as a light adventure bike. It replaces the GSA1200. I have never looked back, these bikes are a pleasure for the 50 and over crew, plenty enough power to keep thinks interesting and reliable enough to not have any worries. One thing I would add to modifications are the Goldentyre fatty at the front and the triple 3 on the rear. Yes, this bike can pound out a day on the pavement with no issues at 70-75mph but when you build a lite adventure bike pavement is not where you want to be. No more thoughts of can I or should I like when you are on the 1200 off road, with the 500 it's just twist the throttle for more fun.

The only problem I have had is i ride with my uncle around Kenilworth QLD and on a wide creek crossing about 40 meters and 400mm deep my bike sucked water into the motor, I was in first gear and going slow and worked out that it came in the drain from the airbox, what a stupid idea putting a great big hole next to your rear wheel that low to suck water into. I blocked off hole and put a small hose as a drain and used a side cover with air holes to allow for more airflow, have not had a problem since and have been through water about the same and the same creek, I cannot belive no one else has had this problem, if you have please let me know as i feel i have done something wrong. I ride with my uncle who has a DR 650 and felt a fool when he went through it and me on a 18k bike stopped dead. Other than that Love it. Cheers Steve

Swing arm polished by side stand. Plastics so so. Besides that engine runs strong, didn't even open it yet.

    Hi Keith, really appreciate all the work you put into these vids mate, they're really helping me get my head around my 23 KTM 500 Adv build. Hope you can answer a few questions;
    1. do yo have any affiliate links for the items you use & rate? I'm happy to support you that way if you do and will def buy you a coffee. ;)
    2. Having added the KKE Cush drive hub rear and front rim and the Globetrottin rack system after this vid was made, would you say either is a must have for the riding you do? (Looks like you've left the cush hub on in your "Crash" Vid?)
Also, with the Globetrottin rack, you've gone for the Daisy Loops (top & bottom) and the Giant Loop attachment.....and it looks like that works for BOTH your GL and Mosko Moto Reckless bags? Im a bit confused as to why Globetrotting also has options for GL and Mosko brackets if what you've got seems to work for both?
    3. The IMS Tank, is there any practical reason you went black? or just aesthetics? (Are they even available in translucent?)
Thanks again for a great channel!

      G'day Cameron,
      1. Affiliate links, only the Engduro tool. The rest are just discounts for you :-) (You can support me direct via the ko-fi page if you wish).
      2. Cush hub, not really necessary. But the rack definitely. It makes luggage packing so much easier.
Yeah dunno about the loops, I think the GL attachment point is all you need.
      3. Looks 😎. A mate just fitted the translucent one on his 500 so yes they are available.

Sometimes I want the bark of a 450 to get the front over stuff, but I hate 450s when it gets technical. I also have a YZ250, and while it satisfies my every desire for off road riding and technical sections, it will never be street legal.

We were looking at the 690 and 701 since they have a longer interval between maintenance but I wonder if the 500 would be a better choice since it's lighter and we still want to do trail riding. On longer trips, did you find yourself doing many oil change or normally your trips were shorter than the interval needed?

Given that your bike has done 200 hours without new piston, valves etc, I wonder if my 350 can do more than 135 hours before it has a overhaul. Another issue is when to get the suspension serviced, it's around £450 to get the forks and rear shock serviced here in the UK, so not something any EXC owner would want to do unnecessarily. Would appreciate any thoughts you have on the aforementioned issues. Keep up the good work posting the videos's!

It's all about the type of riding you do. 135 hrs of actual racing conditions, absolutely. But ADV riding is nothing like racing - less dust, heat, easier on the throttle. Personally I doubt I'll ever do an overhaul unless something goes wrong.
Fork and shock should probably be done every 12 months or so, as they have oil in them. Yes it's a closed system but it will still break down due to heat. Again, judge it on the type of riding you do...if your suspension regularly cops a beating on rough tracks, maybe service it more often than if you just cruise on gravel roads.

@@keithjob Hi Keith, Thanks for getting back to me, that's great advice. The manual says to overhaul engine at 70 hours if you're racing, and 135 for more normal use. I think KTM like to cover themselves, and I imagine they enjoy the vast amounts of revenue they earn if customers are taking their bike to KTM dealers regularly at service intervals. Luckily I've got a very good private mechanic who like yourself has a more common sense approach to maintenance intervals, and what does and doesn't need doing. Thanks again for getting back to me, much appreciated!

@@markgratton7361 Hi Mark, thanks for the reply. I had the dealer do a valve clearances check after 1 hour of use.
I then had my non dealer mechanic check them again at 15 hours. He said one of the valves was right on the tolerance limit. It made me wonder if the dealer actually checked them. I don’t use the dealers any more, as I don’t trust them-well, not the ones i’ve found anyway, I know there are some good ones out there.
The KTM manual says to check them every 30hours, so i’ll stick with that for the time being.

Hey. Thanks for this. I’m 6’4 and 90kg and plan to travel with luggage. What speed do you think I can comfortably sit on the highway without ringing it’s neck ? And will I be too tall for it ?

Depends on your gearing. 14/48 is pretty good for the highway. At 6'4 I think the seat height will be perfect, maybe add some bar risers. I'm almost 5'11 and I find it a stretch at times.

i am running 14/45 its a bit high for the single track but with some clutch slippage can do it, highway ~100kph is about 5100rpm with run out of puff somewhere over ~170kph I used gearing commander to configure best ratio. carry a 13t front sprocket for slow stuff if needed. and fitted phds and just clocked over 210hrs and 12500km just replaced motoz it enduro tyres I got about 8500km out of the rear (lots of whine though) and about 9200km on front which will be replaced next week or so. replaced with rallz both ends, suspension is going in for a rework through mpe when able springs, service and revalve. seat to be worked on soon as well along with a xl80

@@keithjob Yeah thinking BRP mount with Scotts dampener, BRP has 1.5cm risers. Probably get evo pegs too which also offer 1.5cm more height. Does your custom seat ship to nz? i find the seat concepts unconfortable

I agree with the SC, I bought one initially but thought it was too hard. Give Mario at Topline a ring and have a chat... tell him I sent you! www.toplineseats.com.au/contact.php

I run 15/47 and mine easily sits at 100-110 kph but I wouldn’t want to do it for many hours every day.also have a screen and widened seat which helps a lot.
