  • Model Oil Pump Jack, powered by a single acting steam engine as the prime mover
    About Me...
I started model engineering and building model stationery steam engines in 2015, after constructing a small engineering workshop in my back yard, I use a Myford ML7 hobby lathe, a Dore Westbury benchtop milling machine, along with a pilar drill, bandsaw and the usual hand-tools associated with hobby engineering, and enjoy making model stationary steam engines and general metalworking.
Nearly all of my engines are scratch-built without drawings, from aluminium and brass bar-stock, starting from an initial idea and letting the design evolve throughout the build, although I do sometimes use engine drawings found on the web, as a basis for a design, and then modify it to suit my will, using mostly metric dimensions, but often mix metric and imperial.
I spend countless hours in my workshop working on a single engine, and much pain and frustration can be involved, but all this is eventually offset by the excitement of seeing my model engines take shape and eventually come to life.
My shed is also my sanctuary, it is somewhere where I can go and forget about all the modern day worries of life, and occupy my mind and my hands with doing something creative, where I am free from distraction and interruption.
    Ade

Beautiful work! I’ve installed and operated many wells with these pumping units on them. The speed range is wide with small (minuscule) ones like my Jenkins 13W rated for up to 40 spm (strokes per minute) and large ones that stand around 30 feet tall at the saddle bearing and have up to a 320” stroke with a maximum of 4.5 spm. Check out the Redhead pumping units online if you’re interested. There are a variety of controllers used along with VFDs to allow the units to have a variable speed during the rotation to allow for things like pump barrel fillage, rod stretch and other factors unique to each well. Some oil is thin and flows into the pump quickly while other oil is more viscous and takes more time to flow. The solution gas flows up the casing to the surface where it is usually compressed and sent down the pipeline, often along with the oil to a battery for gathering, storage and processing. There are many companies specializing in oil well optimization that do things like run dynamometers that draw what’s called a “pump card” that can be interpreted and used as a valuable diagnostic tool for getting the most out of a pumping system. There’s so much more to it and those folks are the real experts. You’ve done a beautiful job on this unit, congratulations!

In the USA oil-producing states, these things are known as "grasshopper pumps" because that's what they look like. They are used when the natural gas pressure in the well falls below the capacity to pump. At this point you bring in the grasshopper. Usually run by a "hit and miss" gasoline engine although there are alternatives. However I have never seen a grasshopper make a cuppa tea till now:)

Your gear reduction in concept matches a live demonstration engine setup at a local steam and vintage engine exhibit fair. Except there's was a "medium" mill sized single cylinder hit and miss propane / natural gas engine which with it's 2 foot-ish output pulley drove a massive horizontal pulley probably in the 30ft diameter range. The horizontal pulley then had a series of offset cams at the base that would run multiple push / pull shafts to power the remote pumping heads. The scale between the pumping head and your engine seems about the same as the full scale exhibit.
