- Model Oil Pump Jack, powered by a single acting steam engine as the prime mover
About Me...
I started model engineering and building model stationery steam engines in 2015, after constructing a small engineering workshop in my back yard, I use a Myford ML7 hobby lathe, a Dore Westbury benchtop milling machine, along with a pilar drill, bandsaw and the usual hand-tools associated with hobby engineering, and enjoy making model stationary steam engines and general metalworking.
Nearly all of my engines are scratch-built without drawings, from aluminium and brass bar-stock, starting from an initial idea and letting the design evolve throughout the build, although I do sometimes use engine drawings found on the web, as a basis for a design, and then modify it to suit my will, using mostly metric dimensions, but often mix metric and imperial.
I spend countless hours in my workshop working on a single engine, and much pain and frustration can be involved, but all this is eventually offset by the excitement of seeing my model engines take shape and eventually come to life.
My shed is also my sanctuary, it is somewhere where I can go and forget about all the modern day worries of life, and occupy my mind and my hands with doing something creative, where I am free from distraction and interruption.

I just love Pumpjacks.
Thanks Leo, I hope to get to see a real one oneday!
Very hypnotic watching it going up and down. It looks and runs as good as the Stuart one.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed the hypnososs - sleep well tonight ;)
Hi Ade,
Cool model oil pump... thanks for an entertaining video...
Take care
Paul,,
Thanks Paul
That reminds me of my home, in Texas.
They were everywhere.
Nice to hear Thirsty, I'm visiting Texas in 2024, hopefully see the real deal :)
This might be one of the best things I've ever seen on youtube. It would be amazing if you could make a future video explaining how you made this, or some kind of tutorial.
I have lived in the state of Kansas USA 63 years lived around and worked on many pump jacks. That is the cleanest and nicest one I have ever seen . It doesn't squeak or rattle from wore out bearings. Beautiful job and a excellent machine
We have missed you ! But the wait was worth it , nice model thank you .
Many thanks Steve!
Brilliant work Ade, been waiting for another video for a while- certainly didn’t disappoint! Why don’t you sell the plans for these, or do a Tubal Cain type book? I’d be first in line to buy
Thanks Mick, difficult to find the time to make the drawings, been building this for 6 weeks on and off, I need to retire from work to find the time, been 3 months since my last video, but thank you for the helpful encouragement. Best Regards. Ade
my new favourite video of yours. :)
That is so incredibly nice. Well done Ade.
Also, I love the humorous mug
Thanks! 😃
Using it for tea is about the most British thing ever.
Yep, can't beat a good cup of tea :)
Still Loving it !
Brilliant Ade. It looks gorgeous. Perhaps you could run a little garden water feature with it? Probably need a load more power though I suppose.
Thanks John, yeah Tea-Bagging is about the limit for this little machine :)
Good to see you're still with us, Ade. I thought you'd left yourself well short on that cuppa -- the last shot explained why!
Yeah, the only T-bag in the house with a string on it, never again! Thanks for watching :)
Fantastic Ade, I think they call them nodding donkeys
Thanks Jean, Regards, Ade
Beautiful
what a beautiful piece of machinery. I enjoy watching it, and the video is fire too
Thanks Rob
Big boys toys, cool projects great job.
Thank you 🤗
In the USA oil-producing states, these things are known as "grasshopper pumps" because that's what they look like. They are used when the natural gas pressure in the well falls below the capacity to pump. At this point you bring in the grasshopper. Usually run by a "hit and miss" gasoline engine although there are alternatives. However I have never seen a grasshopper make a cuppa tea till now:)
Thanks for the helpful info Juan, much appreciated. Ade
Great work. Looks great. Works well. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks 👍
Wow, that looks great! I'm about half way through building the original Wig Wag right now. Looks like I'm going to have to make a tool for it to run, too..
Very nice set up!
Thanks!
Thanks for sharing! It's a fine pice of craftsmanship and runs great. Liked the tea jack but VOG might not.
Thanks for watching!
Nice work, I remember these when I was in California in '73, reminded me of the Praying Mantis Lol. Now you need to make up the lifting pump to go with it. Scary mug 😜, and now for a coffee!
Oh yes! coffee from now on :)
I found a massive single cylinder vertical steam engine that had been used for drilling oil wells sitting out in the middle of nowhere in central Oregon.
What a great machine Ade, well done. You have got the gearing speed spot on.
Thanks 👍
very nice as always, Ade. thanks for sharing
Cheers Emma, all the best, Ade :)
Excellent👍
Cheers Clive, I'm thinking of a Trebuchet next :) Regards. Ade

That is one great build. Your such an inspiration to me to take time and start making these cool things
Brilliant
amazing channel!
Thanks :)
Fantastic! You have me wanting to make these but I don’t have your skills.
You can do it!
Hi Ade. Great project you made there and the work you put it to doing gave me a good chuckle. Thanks for sharing. Looks like your daughter is much like my children. Prone to doing some crazy stuff. Thanks again.
Joe
Glad you enjoyed it Joe :)
Awesome !
Thanks!
Absolutely wonderful!
Thank you! Cheers!
Very nice. That is actually about the average speed of a full size unit although there really is no set speed
Thanks
Great!!!! Absolute neat...... 😉😊
Ade... search for wilesco 80820 "Antriebsspirale" its a spiral kind of belt... like a spring. One end is tighten up like a screw. You can cut them in leght, and simply screw them together.... Great stuff!!!
Thanks, Regards, Ade
Lovely work. More videos please Ade !!
Thank you! Will do Mike when time permits :)
Truly sweet. Whoever disliked this video is a total hole! Keep up your great work!
Thank you Mark! Will do!
Astonishingly beautiful. Love the aluminium bearing block. Please don’t paint it. Thank you for showing such a wonderful build. Very inspirational.
Thank you very much Mr Carpathian, glad you enjoyed it :) Best Regards. Ade
Beautiful work. Have been looking for someone who machined one of these as some inspiration to do so on my own... Thanks Ade. Great job.
Many thanks!
Brillante !!! Saludos !!!
Gracias :)
It must also a nice Beerpump … 3moves fore a Pint 🍺
Brilliant work didn't they run on what they sucked up cruid oil
Hi John, thanks for the comment, I think most of these are run from electric motors today, but yeah an engine driven from the oil source would be self-sufficient :)
Great Work and funny Tea Joke ...
Thanks for watching :)
Beautiful. nuf said :)
Thanks
Well done, Ade. Lovely thing. I prefer the bearing mount as raw aluminium, adds a nice accent I think! All the best.
Thanks Tinker :)
LoL... perfect 👌
Cheers :)
this is so amazing, can i get the technical drawing plz, I would be very grateful
Sorry Jiqsaw08, I didn't make any plans
Loved the project and belt idea, didn’t catch what the material is if you could write it down please?
Hi Ian, if you search for 'polyurethane round drive belting' on ebay it will give you the product, I used the 3mm stuff. Regards, Ade
@@AdeSwash thanks for your help.
hi there, nice share, would you mind share the pump jack template?
Your talent is envied...and appreciated. Some very interesting projects. I am new to model machinery but would love to try to build your oil pumper. Do you have any specs available or know where some could be acquired? Great videos also.
Hi Ted, thanks for the comment, unfortunately I dont have drawings for this as it was scratch built and figured out as I went along, the nice thing about this approach is you just make the next part to fit the last, and you end up with a unique model. Regards. Ade
@@AdeSwash Thanks for the response Ade. Your approach works great for someone with your talents but does not work at all for someone like myself and ignorant. Thank you for the videos, they are great.
do you plan to add a pump to this?
Maybe one day
🤣🤣🤣🤣
