Arturia gave me the opportunity to play around with a Minifreak, and I had a lot of fun with it. So in this video I'll share my favorite things about Arturia's Minifreak and why I consider it to be a great purchase.

For the Moog Mariana, Hardware vs Software: First test A is analog B is Mariana, second test A is Mariana B is analog. ua-cam.com/video/bW3JD9RM2jg/v-deo.html&t
This is a big surprise. The second test I really could not hear any difference at all, but on the first test, I thought A sounded a little fatter and thus I am surprised it was not the analog. Wow. Thanks for putting this out.
Hello. First of all, it's always nice to have a physical tool And yes, B is different from A. You can hear it very well if you remove the low frequencies on the speakers.
Cheers mate
Cheers!
I have had the minifreak for a short time and I think it is wonderful, it really makes creating intersting patches very simple and it sounds excellent. I have made everything from traditional analog-esque bass patches to weird metallic trebbly stuff so it presents a lot of options.
Me too, it's super versatile
The Minifreak is great! It is so flexible and deep.
Yes!!
I have the vst of the Minifreak and hardware Microfreak. For the Minifreak (as well as Analog Lab and my other soft synths), I've actually been pondering adding a Keylab Essential at half the price of the hardware Minifreak. Well, that or figure out setting up midi cc on my Minilogue XD.
Haha yeah, I get you, cc can be a pain
A and B is different. But which is better? I liked A better. Doesn’t matter if its digital/analog.
👍👍👍
I'd guess that A is analog and B is digital, but I'm not sure and they're very close. I don't really like the filter all that much. I mean, it's fine, but they chose a filter design that doesn't have a lot of character. That may be appropriate for a polysynth where you don't want each note to be huge and saturated, but it's just too clean IMO. Some sort of (polyphonic) analog drive either in the filter itself or afterwards would have helped a lot.
Agree on that it's not a very colorful filter, but it's alright
@@AlexReidStudios it's fine, good even. I guess my disappointment is, what's the point of a hybrid synthesizer if the only analog component is nearly indistinguishable from digital? Just go full digital and you'll get triple the polyphony, etc..
show us you really love it! peel the plastic off the screen so we know you are keeping it!
Will do... but man... it will start having scratches and marks ;(
@@AlexReidStudios dont where your freddy krueger gloves when playing synthesizers, problem solved!
Lol, I thought the same 😂
@@leo.nordmann I'll do it and upload a reel to instagram
@@AlexReidStudios no worries man, was just a funny thougtht. I still have the thing on my minifreak too, but I was contemplating selling it so that was my reason for it. Pretty sure I'm gonna keep it, because the sequencer is pretty nice in itself.
A is analog, I guess. However, softwares can theoretically be as close as hardware that you cannot hear the difference. I liked this discussion on the topic: ua-cam.com/video/kk-3vXOAtVo/v-deo.html
I have my video on "watch later", haven't got the time yet!
Im no expert but I can often hear the difference in blind test. Often the analog sounds better but sometimes there is no audible difference.
Omri Cohen did a blind test of Plaits in hardware vs. VCV Rack. My recollection is that the votes were correct at a 2:1 margin, with the hardware generally being a bit more saturated or "crispy." Given that you really have to listen hard to hear it, I'd say this is a tiny difference.
Where the difference arises is one question. More important is when the difference actually makes a difference. In that case, I'd guess hardly ever. Maybe if you were doing ELEH style minimalism?
I think the analog filter on the mini freak is very tame, and I don't imagine the listener would really tell the difference in a musical context.
I find that the major impact of hardware on music is typically more a matter of interface (constraints and affordances) than sound. Sometimes analog sounds better enough that it affects the music, e.g. a 303, but I think that mainly happens when the listener knows what they wanted to hear and get a knock off instead.
