I like the Festungsbahn video from Salzburg, it gives me good memories. I took the Festungsbahn to the top of the castle about 3 PM CEST on Monday 31st December 2001, not much sunlight left for the day. It also lightly snowed when I looked towards the Salzach and also the Hotel Sacher. It was exactly the day before the Euro became the official currency of Austria and many other participating countries. Ironically I paid for the round trip up and down in Schilling as part of a three day public transit package the day before. The first thing I ever bought with the Euro, was a day pass for the Linz tram and bus system, which cost 2.80 Euro, about 40 Schilling. It was exactly on New Year's Day 2002. The hostel breakfast room staff told me I was the first person in the entire hostel who even woke up in time for breakfast, considering that there was much partying going on in the Altstadt, so much Stiegl and Glühwein being consumed, and yes I stayed up so late for the midnight fireworks and the chance to buy 35 Euro for 500 Schilling. A starter kit of Euro coins could be bought for 14.54 Euro for 200 Schilling. Needless to say, the busses stopped running and I had to follow along the line 51 towards Polizeidirektion where the same hostel is still located, in very cold and sometimes 50 cm snow drifts, temps in the -5 to -10 Celsius range, and when I arrived at the Egger Lienz Straße bus stop I was extremely happy, only 500 meters more until the hostel. 19 years on I still live to tell the tale. I was researching this the other day, because I saw the freight railway in the background of a shot in The Sound of Music and wanted to know what it was. 😂
