- Do you really know Romford Market? Did you know there used to be grass monkeys that children could hold? That the Queen visited and was presented with bed sheets? That there were even parrots you could pet? The Romford Recorder spoke to Tony Luscombe and Robert Benham about the history of Romford Market.
I remember buying my first pair of trainers when I was around 12 years old oAWF the Romford market. when I got home I was well excited. whacked em on. they was both for left feet lol
This bought such a smile to my face, this is where I grew up. Love this xx
Happy days , cycling to work from Collier Row to Romford , 1957 .
I First started to work on the market in 1964 I was only 11
we sold trousers . it takes me back seeing this we had nice times
back then and I remember you Tony . its sad the markets are not the
same to day
I worked on the market when I was 11, in 1996! Good memories. Hard work!
Ah, I remember it well! Born Romford 1937 moved from there in 1972 to live in Cornwall , where I have remained ever since! Do I miss it? Not really! I obviously have memories, but prefer living where I do now! Romford has got swallowed up by being too near London and has lost some of it's identity!
Only bureaucraticly, not geographically. You can't physically move a town or a county.
Worked there 66-68 for loony guy , Lofty Box , wore a red fez, sold material.
Good laughs and the 5 bob a week was good.
‘They’re as thick as my bruvva’ hahaha!!
Thank you so much for sharing 🥰

Many happy times , when Romford was in Essex and we lived in Collier Row . If the wind was in the right direction , you could smell the hops from the brewery . The Lodge Lane pig farm ....phew , say no more .
Amy Winehouse I live in Romford we still use RM today
I lived on Morant Gardens 1985--2004. I remember the hog farm smell if it rained and the wind was right. I remember the smell of the brewery, one of my earliest memories.
I remember Brian cook he had a son Tony .
Where's the tea lady with her one spoon on a chain that everyone had to share? :D
