Best unit Athearn released !
SUPER BEAUTIFUL MODEL,ONLY THE YELLOW DEFROSTERS ON THE FRONT WINDOWS ARE MISSING AND THE CHAIN THAT CONNECTS THE LEVER OF THE MANUAL RELEASE TO THE FRONT HOOK
This SD70ACu look great, like how you did the diagrams. Didn't realize they had details like that air line bracket

Great review. The soundtraxx capacitor current keeper #810140 can be fitted just behind the LED light housing at the rear of the cab and plug right in. The spinning bearring caps I can live without.

That model looks fantastic on the outside. I can't believe, however, what a mess it is on the inside. There are effing wires going everywhere, with no tidy tape or disconnect plug. Why not go with contact pads like Scaletrains, or a JST connector? In my retrofitted diesels, I use JST 6 pin connectors for the lights. It works well and allows me to remove the shell and chassis for whatever reason. Seriously, this just looks like a poorly done home hobbyist job, not for a near $300 locomotive.
yes.been my gripe with Athearn, too.Finally changed to led lighting, but everything is tethered, under the shell.Athearn have been way behind the competition, for years, yet their pricing is up with everything else.Apart from that ,they do have some really nice models, but there is more competition out there now so they need to up their game under the hood, though.Cheers
Great review!!!! got my 3 units this week, and despite having some brake chain issue ( 22 inch curves on my layout), they run great!!!

NS should have talked to me me first before buying those SD90 MACS. I watched several of those units sit deep in the three tracks of dead units in our yard because of cracked frames, fuel leaks and other issues for YEARS. And back to storage they went at NS.
I cant believe that Ahearn did not choose to do the Progress Rail yellow bananas and the black blackberry schemes (if these are the same model loco) ex/would be NS units .
well there is more millitary paint jobs too, im sure they will do more eventually

Sorry the stupid question, but I’m European and plan to order some American trains.
Are all the trains by the same manufacturer already well synchronised to put them in double or triple tractions? Or do you have to manipulate all the cvs?
They are great looking models, great review. I think I'm in the minority, but i think that using the real chain for the brake chains looks oversized and a little too droopy, but I get it. The are compromises that had to be made so the model can take smaller radius corners.. Overall I'm incredibly happy with these models. All the special CP paint jobs look awesome.

Great review, but it's ship side grey not battleship grey, it's RCN colours. The American navy color is darker. Still great review 👍

Wasnt the problem for the sd90s its prime mover ?
On the 6000hp versions, the prime mover was a major issue. On the convertible 4300hp versions, the main issues as I understand them were the mentioned frame cracking, and electrical.

There is no such color as battle ship grey. The color is haze grey.

Here's the Athearn Product Page. I didn't include any links for the CP 7022 since it is currently sold out at all the retailers I know of. I had to purchase my model on ebay.
